MineCraft clones... it's not entirely fair to call them that, because sometimes they 'try' to do things in order to differentiate themselves from MineCraft. You know what I'm talking about right? Games like: FortressCraft, 3079, Total Miner: Forge, ect. And of course there are games that are almost direct rip-offs.
Believe it or not this same sort of stuff was going down about 10 years ago! Before the internet was a huge thing, before there was YouTube, Facebook, and all sorts of news website, and before your phone could do everything for you. Way back in 1993 id Software released DooM on DOS as shareware. Needless to say the game was EXTREMLY POPULAR (reportedly there were more copies of Doom installed on people's computer in 1995 than Windows95!) and set the stage for the first-person shooter genre.
There were many videogames that came just after the release of DooM, however they weren't called first-person shooter games (you may see where I'm going with this), they were called DooM clones. This term was used for about 5 years until the term first-person shooter mostly replaced it by 1998.
So back to MineCraft, what do you guys think? Will there be day when we stop calling games that are like MineCraft "Clones?" What do you think we will call this new genre of videogames? Leave a post!
The problem with games like Minecraft are that most of them are "clones" just trying to make money off of a popular thing. Eventually I think those games with cease to exist and the games that were considered "clones" won't because they did things to make themselves different.

Which is sort-of what happened back then, DooM was released, was super popular, people tried to make money off of the games success by developing games that were just like it. Then as technology got better, the developers tried to move away from the status of 'Clone' Ex: Duke Nukem 3, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, Half-Life, more ect.

You are trying to protect them with nonsense arguments.
None of them are 100% the same as minecraft ( exept for Total Miner, that is just a 100% rip-off with minor changes to make the developer not look like an ass in front of other people. ) but all of them were 100% inspired in minecraft until they saw that they were being really stupid trying to clone a game and decided to add their own elements.
One day a long time ago, when fortresscraft development started someone asked him what exactly he was doing with the game he said he was coding.
he literally say : Basically Minecraft for the XBOX
Hestated he was cloning MC for the XBOX.
But then of course million of people started bothering and calling him names until one day he thought :
**** THIS ****!, im cleaning my name adding my own ****even thought he made a rip-off of minecraft AND ACCEPTED IT!
Fortresscraft, Total Miner deserve NO RESPECT!, they now have original stuff but its because people started saying they were just ripping off MC and they wanted to clean the mess they had purposely done.

I'm not trying to "protect" them, I'm saying that this has all happened before. Besides I agree with you about Total Miner: Forge and FortressCraft, those games can burn, BURN.

Terraria and this Iphone game called Junk Jack are the only games in MC's genre that actually do something original and have developers that are even remotely humble.
Fortresscraft's developer is extremely arrogant and gloats like hell about how his game has modern tech, and he's also a massive hypocrite. (He wants reviewers to give MC a lower score for it's combat system. Fortresscraft's combat system involves holding down a button until the enemy dies.)
Total miner's most recent updates have added in seeds, custom player skins, and villages. Sound familiar?

Exactly! Some people will come out and say, "Hey! I am inspired by MineCraft and will develop a game that is somewhat similar, but try to differentiate it as much as possible!" While the developers of games like those rip-off the game completely and say, "What's MineCraft? Some shitty rip-off of my game or something?"

3079 is a bad example of a "Minecraft Clone" since it's more of an RPG shooter. The only similarity is the world generation being blocky. It's the games that not only have the same blocky world, but have the exact same user interface, same distinguishing gameplay, same look, same goals, and even just a slightly altered name! And then those developers go on to say, "We're not trying to copy <insert copied source here>, we are only inspired by it."
If copying someone's essay (even writing again in your own words) and adding some of your own work is considered plagiarism, and can result in suspension or dismissal from post-secondary schools, this shouldn't be allowed either.

1. I put 3079 on the list because it's like MineCraft in some ways, and different in others. There are people who do view it as a clone.
2. Yes because I absolutely copied this from someone else. I did some research from different sources and got information, I haven't yet seen anyone compare people calling MineCraft clones to DooM clones as of yet.

The difference you can see between minecraft clones and Doom clones is that doom popularized a format through which to offer content. Doom clones didn't just clone doom you had level design, art and sound assets and what passed for a story back then. Sure there were of course some blatant ripoffs but those were mostly to spread the game to other systems and most of them never really got anywhere anyway.
The genre of Minecraft is essentially a contentless format. The sandbox as a genre has existed for some time and the way to differentiate yourself with the sandbox genre is how your sandbox works and how it looks. If you clone a sandbox you will only ever just be a copy of the original. If you make your own sandbox then you have made a new game, even if it might have been inspired by another. 1. I would not claim that wolfenstein 3d was a doom clone, yet they were very similar in many aspects. But they had different art and sound assets different level designs and a different story. The main identifier of the games are the same, they're a first person shooter in single plane pseudo 3d setting, as was duke nukem 3d.
Minecraft didn't invent anything but minecraft and as such I find it hard to believe that minecraft clones will survive for any length of time. Meanwhile other sandbox games will probably prosper in the future aswell.
You have a valid point and I agree, how ever I have one little problem here...
1. Wolfenstein 3D and DooM were developed by the same company: id Software
That, and Wolf3D came out a year before DooM did, 1992 to 1993 respectively.

It's difficult to express emotion and voice with text, so yeah, I may have taken his comment the wrong way.
Yeah, I was talking about those developers, sorry about the miscommunication. And to expand on my reasoning about 3079 not being a clone is that the main gameplay isn't about breaking blocks, placing blocks, hoarding raw materials to craft wih, or building anything you want. It seems that it's more based on questing, earning money, and leving your character to improve it's stats. Those are two distinct experiences.

And minecraft first started of by cloning infiniminer, dwarf fortress and some other game that i don't remember, which by time it have change but still.....
The difference is minecraft took ideas from those games and changed them.

I think it's ok to call some game a clone. But the thing is that if you know anything about free markets or capitalism, competition is only a good thing. Without competition mojang could say that ok this game get sales so no need to keep developing it. Now we have competition so they have to keep working on the game and keep it one step further from the others. I'm not saying that Mojang would stop working on MC but that could be the case.
In the end thanks to competition companies push out games that are better and better. And like the first post pointed out why "copying" or stealing" ideas and trying to imrove them is good thing for us - we have large variety of FPS games.

Saying those many FPS games are a good thing is kind of funny.

Well that's might be your opinion. Atleast there have been some kind of developing from Doom, don't you think?
To be honest MC is only game I play and only game I'm truly interested in. But even thought I'm not into games like Mass Effect I cant say it suck just because I don't like it.

Of course there is the multi-million dollar winning regurgitated shite like Call of Doody 1337: Modern Warfare OVER 9000! (Rated M for children under 12 might I add...) But under all of that crap we still do have an occasional good or under appreciated FPS. It's mostly because that, over time, people have seemed too... run out of ideas. So for the most part they said, "Hey! Graphics are everything right? That's why Half-Life 2 and DooM 3 were popular right? LET'S DO THAT TOO!"

Unless your game involves throwing socks at monster to kill them and Hidden Fun Stuff, it isn't related to Dwarf Fortress.
Anyhow, most games that look similar to MC are just shameless ripoffs. Terraria is a separate category- it's just a different game, period.
But you can't deny that it was influenced by MineCraft, or at least I can't.
