I fired up Minecraft and played my first Superflat map after it was recommended to me by a friend. I was dropped into a world, unknowing that what I was about to experience would change the way I thought about Minecraft.
I started running toward the horizon, hoping to see any sign of civilization. Thoughts of Rick Grimes in "The Walking Dead" immediately jumped into my brain, as I saw lifeless killing machines bounding at me from all sides. I had nothing on my person to help protect me, and turning to make a stand would have been sure death.
After what seemed like forever, rooftops began to crest at the furthest point my eyes could focus. A TOWN! Surely there must be someone there who could help me!
I made it to my civilized sanctuary just as the sun began to set. I found it populated by husks of flesh that may be the worst cost of all in this apocalypse. Their staring, unblinking eyes said nothing as they went about what meager lives they had left. Walking to a fro aimlessly, it was clear none of these citizens would have anything to do with solving the problems beyond their four walls.
After searching several houses and not finding anything of use to help me beat back the horde, I made the conscious decision to do whatever it took to survive. For the rest of that endless night, I tored down what walls I could and collected as much material as possible while the slimy death bored down on my location from beyond my brief habitation of some stranger's abode. When I could see that the numbers were starting to become too large, I would bolt from the doorway and run to another house and repeat the same process.
When dawn finally broke across the land, I brandished a crudely made sword and fought for my life against the menaces that sought my blood the most. While their numbers measured in the dozens and seemingly for every one I killed four more would take their place, I felt like it would never let up.
Finally, I saw daylight. I bolted from my spot and split through them heading north as fast as I could. I lost my sword but was smart enough to craft another, and all I had in my bag was a few meager loaves of bread. I made it through my first day, but if I was to make it through many more, I would have to find the source of this worldly infection and the means with which I could destroy it.

Hopefully the above gives you the same sort of feeling I had when playing Superflat Survival for the very first time. If tweaked a little bit, it clearly has the potential to become one of the finer points of the game itself, and the potential is almost limitless.
My biggest disappointment was that once I was able to create a small fortification, I hit bedrock once I got a few blocks down. My dream of crafting better weapons and wreaking havoc was crushed in an instant. I was in a room I built, nothing could get in, but there wasn't much more for me to do.
So I have a few ideas I wanted to throw out there, and if anyone knows of anything that's out there in mod-land that could help me achieve this through the use of mods that would be great...or if I could accomplish the same thing by coding something out. Or is my best bet sacrificing an ocelot to the gods Mojang listens to?
What would make Superflat achieve the mega-awesome:
Superflat crust with creamy, thorough underworld content. Is it possible to generate a superflat world where chaos is above but the underworld still contains all the dangers and materials of the rest? It seems like that would be logical to help us get the best bang for our apocalypse.
Fortifications take damage from slimes. In my mind, I see user placed blocks having the same sort of wear status that items and armor have. Slimes could "dissolve" most materials after enough time, forcing you to rethink your fortification strategy. Make some blocks (maybe Iron) immune to dissolution, so they become the premier choice for protecting your puny body.
Zombie infestations. This might already be something that can be done, but have zombie spawners in each town tweaked to high hell so that zombies spill out like crazy. Then getting to, and disabling the spawner becomes an objective. I know there are several mods out there that allow spawner manipulation, but is there a way to tweak the game to manipulate spawner production (to produce raging hordes)?
Give the stronghold a master switch. This would be the trickiest part since I'm unsure its even possible. Inside the stronghold, place a switch or some sort of conditional that would manipulate the game variables to disable slime spawning. In theory it could be done a number of ways, but giving us a kill switch easily defines a target for a game "end". I don't know if there is way to manipulate this option through a script or mod, but this aspect would make for a fantastic adventure.
Combining these points, you would get a world which you land in the most perfect "zombie apocalypse" scenario I can imagine. You scrounge for materials, build a defense, mine for resources, fight to free the towns, then ultimately stop the scourge itself. Afterwards, you can return back to the world you saved and do that one thing that you never see in the movies: Rebuild!
I'm not sure if this is on the roadmap at all for the team, but in my opinion, it might be an inadvertent gold mine of awesome that could spawn off a number of different incredible ideas.
Apologies for the length, but the thought of this has me excited!
No superflat is LITERALLY for building it's for NO other purpose not role-play its meant to be made in creative and its 3blocks from the bottom of the map to allow building
This is a really fascinating idea. I've heard a lot about the challenges of SuperFlat Survival. Perhaps there could be a superflat specific gamemode, with that kind of objective? I see what everyone is saying about superflat being for being for building, but isn't that what normal used to be for after classic was removed? The game changes, and with it so do the uses for each game mode.
I think your idea is brilliant, but I feel like there's something missing. I don't know what it is, or at least, I can't think of it at the moment.
I thought that superflat is for building, but now I want to try survival too. In hardcore mode.
Isn't it neat how there are always unforeseen consequences to little changes like this?
Minecraft is all about making what you want out of it, and I find it amusing some would troll saying "X is for Y" when talking about this game.
I'm going to continue looking through whatever documentation I can to see if this is possible through modification, or if this is just not possible. I'd love to hear feedback from anyone else willing to try with me.
Superflat is another "toy" in the sandbox and can be whatever you want it to be. Stop saying stuff about what it is intended for and use your brains and try to consider what it can be used for.
Super flat is for building , if you want a zombie apoc do this
1 Get Invasion mod
2 Play it
3 PINGAS
4 ????
5 No profit
But srly superflat is for builders..
Jeb is planning to put a chest in superflat for survival mode for adventure maps or something of the sort. He said it in a tweet, I just don't have the link. lol
That is its intended purpose, to assume a creative community like this one will limit it to just that is silly.
I'm sure Notch didn't code the different colors of wool into the game expecting that someone would come along and make maps where you have to hunt down pieces all the different colors of wool to complete a victory monument but it certainly happened and has become a popular map type.
That's the beauty of Minecraft and if you can't see that I honestly feel kind of bad for you because you're missing out on what really makes it a great game.
That said, I think using superflat for adventure / survival maps would be awesome. A zombie-horror style survival map made with superflat would be really neat, as would an adventure map with truly epic-scale structures built to explore and adventure in. I can't wait to see what kind of awesome superflat maps we see people come up with.
I'm not sure at what point over the past 20 years of the web creative brainstorming became something that some people felt a Crusade-like obligation to post acerbic commentary to, but I feel stupider for having read some of them in this thread.
Did you know that there is a difference between World Type (Superflat | Default) and Game Mode (Survival | Creative | Hardcore)? You can already select Hardcore Superflat or Creative Superflat. If you select Hardcore or Survival, slimes immediately spawn in droves because all their conditions are met, and the story I posted is EXACTLY what happened when I tried that.
I can understand if you weren't aware that this part already existed. If you did and you still posted this, may whatever Gods your family believes in have mercy on your childless parents.
Seems legit. I am playing a hardcore survival on one of these. I think im going to build 2x2 deep water holes to trap slimes around my village. Also, you can expand villages! If you do so underground, the villagers will be safe but the golems will still spawn to defend. The zombie sieges are great too.

Remember kids, when the mod crashes delete system32!
That's like saying Minecraft is for mining. I'm explaining an inadvertent byproduct that has potential in survival mode as well.
for building.

GET SUMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!! :ohmy.gif:
"It's for building"
Your mom is for building. I've always dreamed of a MC zombie swarm.
BUT, another mode that alowed you to play superflat survival would be nice. Note, ANOTHER mode, as the current superflat is a building map.

Hence the whole "tldr" note?
