Anyway, no, I think it's the lack of water and vegetation.
It can't be a special tree, as they just didn't exist back then.
//By special trees I mean birches and pines/spruces, not large oaks
Vegetation == tall grass, no?
Water — that's what is good about the noise-based height — you can get dry land, nice coast, deep ocean etc in any biome. (One of my survival worlds is a small rainforest island)
I find the large cave systems challenging and exiting. Unless you keep your wits about you and have a solid pathfinding strategy, you'll be lost and probably dead. I tend to light every cave system up and dig out whatever ore they hold for the fun of it, even when branch mining net a more steady income.
As for the extreme hills, I live in a castle on a mountaintop overlooking a hidden valley, and though the biome could use a few more trees, it holds fantastic structures.
Come to think of it, has a treeline and a snowline been suggested already? Perhaps with a vertical variation in biome shading as well.

I agree 60%. I like exploring huge caves, but not all the time. It should be random.
Guys, here's what I think of what cave variation should be. (My first diagram for terrain!) http://imgur.com/MIAVfyc
Alright, though this looks like utter crap, I think it gets the point across. Caves are spammed in some areas, and there are barely any in some areas. This appeals to all people; Those who like everything random, those who like tons of caves, and those who'd just rather mine.

It's pretty good though and realistic, i would add more into this reply, but my drivers are pretty unstable so i want to enjoy some gaming, giving a headshot at Black Ops II

If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 99% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 1% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens.
MMM. I disagree. If we removed ALL realism from minecraft, we would have no dirt, water, stone, air, diamond, cows, buckets, sun, moon, ect. ect...
Well, we'd keep stone, as IRL there is no generic stone like there is in MC.
But IMO, if i'm playing a game I want to escape reality, not live it. I can understand if it's a simulator but in a game like Minecraft i'd forego realism in favor of gameplay.
I also miss the old generation. But there is a mod the brings back the EXACT generation as beta and alpha, along with some other good world options (tested it, seeds like 404 and glacier still work )

Not exact. I can write a long post with description of inaccuracies of every old generation mod. But I will not, as it's offtopic, since we are not talking about old generation, and 1.7.3 generator is just an example of better generator. What we want is not any old generator, but a new generator, better than any previous one.
Mods are not a solution anyway, and they will never be in the vanilla game.
As far as I have noticed, the terrain is getting fairly droll overtime when I began playing. I've also noticed that caves were much more common to find now, after I saw that picture of the amount of caves in that one area. I will put in support of this forum thread on the subject of reworking the terrain generation.

I never understood why people say this. If you want something changed in a game, but 21% of other people don't, no matter how un-justified their claim is, the best thing to do is modify only your client. Then, everybody is happy.

This also applies to old versions.

Ugh. Worldpainter trees. Why must they be so ugly?

This one is dry, other savanna may be wetter.

Except to some degree it doesn't hurt.
