So i bought minecraft yesterday, cause i got bored of not playing it in so long, and immediately began my hunt for...
OBSIDIAN!
Thats right, i spent hours digging a tunnel, FINALLY finding diamonds, making a diamond pick, and then beginning the mining of the obsidian I'd farmed. then i fell in a very-hard-to-see hole full of lava. And died, and lost everything. I spent another hour looking for diamonds, but no use.
Is there an easier way to find diamonds? Cause you need a diamond pick to mine Obsidian, and I wanted to use the obsidian to create a portal to that Netherworld (Netherlands? ah hahaha) place just to see it.
Branch mining. Dig a long tunnel, then every other block dig a long tunnel off of it.

Leaving a three block wall between branches is even better. You cover more ground and aren't likely to miss much in the thin invisible area between branches, since most veins will jut into one of the visible walls. On the whole, your veins revealed per blocks mined ratio is higher that way.
Also, mine at the height where the game reports your y-coordinate (press F3 to see) as being ~12.6. This gives you the best chance of exposing caverns (with lots of visible rock and thus lots of chances to easily spot diamonds out in the open) without tunneling straight into a wall of lava.

Eh, I've found single block veins before, so even a small chance of missing out on a Diamond dissuades me from doing 3 blocks wide, even though it's more efficient.

You could also miss diamonds from them simply being a couple layers below or above you. Unless you're setting up one of those mines that examines every block in the bottom twenty layers of each chunk to find every diamond, you're better off trying to maximize your veins per block mined ratio; while you may miss some diamonds, you'll also find more diamonds faster.

I hate that. I always think WHAT IF THEY ARE RIGHT BELOW MY FEET!

The thought that there was a tetris-shaped group of 4 diamonds in that middle layer of a 3-block thick wall would nag away in the back of my head and annoy me.
I do the 11-12, 14-15, 17-19 3-decker 2 block thick walled strip mine thing that reveals everything from 10-20, and even so, the 2 block wide strip under and above each wall being hidden is annoying.
Someday, I'll have filled a double crate with diamond stacks, in addition to a full set of intact tools, weapons and armor of diamond...at that point, I am granting myself the Achievement of "You don't have to bloody strip mine anymore" and will just grant myself what diamonds I need from that point. Playing is playing but if I get to that point, I am deeming the diamond part of the game as "won" and won't have to dance around lava anymore.
Ya. I think the 3 branch mining would be better, as long as im at the right height (right now im just digging down until i find lava, then ill dig further until i find bed rock, then ill get buckets and pour it on the lava to make obsidian (thats called Obsidian Farming right?)
The Diamond vein I found was 5 blocks big, so i was able to make a diamond pick and still have 2 diamond left over (which i now regret not turning into a sword cause my mine is crawling with creepy-crawlies)
I was trying to dam off the lava, and i ran out of cobble stone. So i switched to using wood blocks, after i placed it i waited a second and they didn't light on fire, so i thought 'Weird, but atleast im safe!'
My but was very burnt. Anywho, the hunt for diamonds continue!
Well, first try to find a laaaaaaaaaaarge cave. They're actually dooooooooown in the world. Now,get 4 full stacks of and explore. Also, you need a Iron pickaxe and a lot of stone pickaxes to open your way. Doing that I found 27 in one gigantic cave. '-' LOL '-'
GOOD LUCK AND BE CAREFUL IN CASE OF !
*EDIT*: And take a lot of shovels with you, remove ALL the dirt and gravel.
Also, be careful of ( ) and ! GOOD LUCK!²

ya i finally found some diamond and a tiny lava lake. So i made a diamond pick axe and what not and hid it in a chest beside the lava so if i died i wouldn't lose it all, then i tunneled a straight line of stairs to the surface, well lit with torches, and got some water, came down, turned the lava into obsidian, and BAM, made a portal to the nether. Those floating things shot me with explosives, so i ran and built a small cobblestone fortress then built a road of cobblestone from the fort over a lava river, over the wasteland of fire, and to the portal so if I come back, i wont be lost!
Now i feel like building an awesome underground temple, and then going above ground to the tunnel entrance and also building a cool temple, just so when i go off on my own to explore the rest of the map (i literally, when the game started, just made a wood pickaxe and started digging down until i found iron and made iron picks, then kept digging, prolly took an hour to find the lava) i can always come back to where i was. Thats how i operate, i just build elaborate buildings then build one tower that goes VERY high up so i never get lost haha.
I wish i could find a multiplayer server...it always says i cant connect...cause i wanna build a town/village/city sort of deal, which you can do on singleplayer, but it'd be funner if other people populated it too, instead of :Zombie:'s and :Pig:'s. Atleast in the Nether the pigmen thingies are nice, i should build a town for them.

Is more efficient.
EDIT: Ninja'd.
Well now that I see it, Durr I feel dumb.
lol thanks for clarifying.
