Hello! I decided this evening to jump into multiplayer finally and see what it's all about. I found a newish server and got in, but was greeted rather rudely because I had questions about the rules and all that of MP. =/ Is there a specific site with basic rules or maybe even a specific MP server you guys would recommend I start on? The one I had attempted said it was Casual RP, which sounded kinda fun.

Well, the question is. Do you want a server where you have a infinite amount of blocks, and all you do is build stuff? Or would you want to play a server with Mobs In it (Zombies, Spiders, Skeletons) And earning your own blocks?
Okay, like...can you generally just start building wherever you want (as long as something isn't already there)? Is there a "local chat" style option, or is it all server-wide? Where's the best place to look for friendly, preferably RP-style servers to get into? Things like that. I'm sincerely just lost. lol
Oceanie - thank you for your response. :smile.gif: I would love to find a server with the same base game rules as single player (chopping/mining etc to get materials to build) that has some RP to it. Maybe my problem is I'm not really sure where the best place to look at a list of RP-type active servers would be.
You need to just look on the forums under "servers" for some options. Servers can vary from basically do anything you want to a complex society. There are a lot of free ones to choose from. Basically they all have the same rules of no greifing, no stealing and no verbal abuse in the text box. Some will have reward systems set up and bonus abilities. Overall if you find a good one you will have to survive in it like in single player. Try this ip out if you want a good server:

I found it to be great. What you want to do when you join is read the rules on the signs and then go out away from everyone else's creations and survive. If you look around then you can find cities to settle in like I did. Also make sure you keep and eye on the chat and type /help when you want to see a list of commands.
One thing that is important is to keep looking at different servers until you find your favorite. Some servers can be super high tech and amazing, but usually hard to get into such as Herocraft. To get into that you have to apply on its thread here in the forums.
Best thing to do is just follow the generic rules of Minecraft if you were two seperate souls.
First rule is to never damage anything another player has built. I'd say you'd be banned if you did.
Second rule is never take/steal any other players items. If someone stole 64 diamonds out of your chest would you be happy?
Third and last rule, never kill anyone for no reason. It's not cool.
I feel like you're looking too deep into it. Just find a server you like or want to try out, whether it's an RP server, vanilla, PVP, there are tons. There should be rules and information on the signs at spawn, and the owner/staff shouldn't have any issues with helping a player play their server.

Yo dawg, i herd u liek swag, so i put swag in your swag so you can- No. Stop.
If your server is giving you crap about trying to learn the rules, you should probably find a new one. The staff should always be there to help new players.
Anyways, some "general" server rules you'll often find:
Don't hack/cheat/use "modded" clients.
Don't grief, steal, raid, or TOUCH other people's property without their permission.
Don't build RIGHT NEXT TO SPAWN.
Don't be an ass.
Don't bug everyone for items; asking once politely is OK, spamming "can i haz diamond picks" is not.

If you're looking for a friendly server with helpful staff you might want to try DevCore. IP is devcore.us. We're in 1.4.5 but will be updating as soon as a recommended build for 1.4.6 in Bukkit comes out. We're mainly an arenas server but we also have a "hardcore" survival world where stealing/raiding etc is allowed.
If you were treated like that, I recommend you browse various servers until you find one that you are satisfied with, treated well and you enjoy. I wouldn't stay on a server for one second if I was ever disrespected by a server official.
good job, mods, good job
The most common rules are..
