I don't think it works. You can use a half-stone block, though. Place a dirt block (or whatev), then the half-stone block on top of it. Destroy the first block you placed, and put a fence post under it (in place of the block you destroyed). That's the best I've been able to do for small tables.
Theres a way to do it i've seen it in a few games but i cant for the life of me figure out how they did it.
Isn't there a fence unleashed mod that allows you to put anything on top of fences? I don't know how good that would look though as a table, pressure plates aren't quite the full width of a block are they?
My tables are just pistons looking up with a redstone torch below it, i find it pretty realistic
