I've been working on a program the last couple days for helping with pixel art in minecraft.
I made it for a university assignment, but I thought someone might get some use out of it anyway so I might as well release it.
It's basically a program that pixelates any image into a height defined by the user and then matches the colours to those available in the normal minecraft flavours. Basically it converts any image you want into an image ready for use as a template for pixel art.
For example if you want to convert a picture into a piece of pixel art 32 blocks high, you feed the image into the program and the height and it'll make you a picture that you can use to create your pixel art.

The program also has the capability of using only the colours the user defines (from a preset amount of colours).
Note that this is a veeerrryyy early version of this program. If you make mistakes entering numbers and variables, the program will crash spectacularly. If people show much interest I'll polish it up so it won't do this anymore. :tongue.gif:

No what? Minecraft is pixelated. My suggestion is a way to make an image pixelated(As long as you don't use a fancy filter which blurs the image. "Nearest Neighbour" in Photoshop is the filter you want to use). Minecraft doesn't use 8-Bit textures, just an 8-Bit style(Which are completely different things).

The truely useful part of this program isn't really the pixelation aspect of it, it's more the colour matching and the ability to easily resize to whatever dimensions the gap you have chosen to put pixel art into.
Nothing in Minecraft uses 8-Bit images. Even the current artwork uses 24/32 bit images. So i don't see why there is any need for an application to make 8-bit images.
I think you are missing the point. The point of this is to make pixel art out of blocks in the game world. And you can choose any dimensions for the overall construction to fit into.
It's for making pixel art in the actual game, You want to put the mona lisa out of basic game blocks? Get a picture of the mona lisa, run it through the program, giving the height of the gap in the game world you want, and it'll generate a template for you to make the mona lisa in the minecraft world out of generic blocks you can get in the world.
8bit, 24 bit 32 bit, none of that makes much sense in the context of this program.

Sorry to do such a blatant plug, but I thought readers of this thread might be interested...
We've created a tool called Spritecraft that is similar to this and the wool tool linked above, but I believe it has a few more features. You can take any image and convert it to minecraft blocks. Which blocks the tool uses can be configured, so you could remove things like gold if you don't have much of it to spare. You can also specify a maximum width or height, and the tool supports dithering. And yes, its a jar file- we understand that mac users have feelings too... :smile.gif:
