I've been working on a new adventure map set on an island with two villages Players start on the island with no resources and have to activate villager dialogue to find direction to the quests that need completed. Eventually the player ends up underground in a secret evil dungeon trying to solve the island villager's problem.
The map is made using vanilla mc, just command blocks and Redstone to create all the mechanisms the player has to interact with. The main puzzle aspect is to find resources and figure out how to use them to handle the challenges ahead, surviving mob attacks and night time is also a general aspect of the challenge.
There are three different stages to the map, I've tried so far to keep each new area fairly different from the last. I'm part way through the final 'evil dungeon' and I'm running out of ideas for contraptions!
If anyone contributes and I use their idea I'll give you a mention inside the map
So far I have several 'contraptions' set up;
"Put the correct item in the chest" via hopper item sorters, comparators and command blocks.
"Check mob has been killed" using boss spawning and test for command's on a clock.
"Don't stand/ do stand on the..." Using the execute detect command"
A "teleportation maze" like in the Pokémon psychic gym battle's
An "unreachable button" forcing the players to find resources to make a bow and arrow
An "unreachable door" forcing players to find resources to make a fire resistance potion/ totem of undying
A room "to dark to play in" forcing players to make night vision potions
A "mob/food" spawner using the picture frame, spawns mobs then animals with useful drops before resetting back to mobs
A "flooding room" that fills with water and traps you in as you enter, you must find a secret switch before drowning
A "correct order" trapped chest puzzle, open in the right order to progress and gain loot. Incorrect order results in mobs spawning.
"Hidden chests" only revealed by hidden pistons when activated with a secret switch.
A "creeper maze" forcing the player to create invisibility potions to sneak past the creepers and trigger a command that will summon arrows at them all.
The final mechanism is a "boss fight" ontop of the evil dungeon, you must kill ghasts from atop the roof with what you can find (command block weapon to summon lightning at the ghasts)
There is much content to this map already but I feel like I'm repeating my mechanisms now and would like some fresh contraptions!!

i suggest a looking at the genre and try building challenge ideas around that
