Depends on what type of grinder you have. If it's built around a mob spawner, you can simply cover the floor in half-slabs, stairs, glass, or water, and nothing but what's spawning out of the cage will appear in the dark area.
If it's a spawning platform, then no. Creeper spawns follow the same rules as skeletons and zombies, so if you can get on, you can get all three.
I've heard of "Mob Sorter" systems though I've never built one my self. And I highly doubt that they would be automated in anyway.. there is no way to control what spawns in those pads.. beyond Endermen and Spiders.. Tough a sorter would be Kinda unnecessary for me as I love TNT

there is and it is automated... only problem is it uses comparators which we dont have yet. its the only way to sort skeletons, zombies, and creepers. since they are all the same height. and have relatively similar passive AI (when they cant see a player), but vastly different hostile behavior (granted zombies and creepers are relatively similar)

What are the comparators for??? You can sort zombies out with villagers (when that mechanic is added), and creepers with ocelots (again, when added).

you can sort them out without comparators, if you dont believe me just check out in youtube and look for etho, he has a mob sorter made WAAAAAAY earlier before comparators were brought to the game...

Yeah, but didn't Etho's design require you to stand in a particular spot to get the skeletons to break to the right?

No, Etho's used a timed trapdoor. If a skeleton dropped into the sorter it would just stand there for a second or 2 then the floor would drop out from under him. A creeper would run instantly one way to avoid a trapped ocelot and fall down a separate hole. Zombies would try to attack a trapped villager in the other direction and fall down a 3rd hole
I know that I am late to the game but if you use a basic spawning platform and water to wash them into the kill zone skeletons and zombies sink while creepers and witches float. So if you water flows over a missing block and continues on then you can auto kill witches and creepers while player killing the zombies and skeletons. You can filter witches and creepers using a trapdoor on the ceiling: The creeper will fit under while the witch will not (but this may end up having them congregate until they wander out themselves).
