I've been playing MC360 since the weekend it came out. I absolutely suck at it. All I've been able to do is make a wooden house, a short tunnel through the ocean, and a small tower... as much as I try I always have trouble. I see cool cities that people made and want to do stuff like that, but I don't know where to even start. Any advice? Thanks
I'm going to assume that your post means that you've only been playing for about a month (you've never played MC before that).
You're doing fine. You don't suck.
You have to remember that a lot of the people here have been playing MC for years, sometimes hours at a time, daily. They have a lot of experience. All those wonderful buildings you see? You didn't see dozens of crappy ones they built before that. You also don't know how much time it took to build them. Some take way more than a month, even if you know what you're doing.
Like legos, no matter how big it is, it's built one brick at a time. Have a plan, lay it out, build it up one block at a time, one building at a time.
You know the old saying: "Practice makes Perfect".
(Or I have my own "6 P's": "Prior Planning Prevents **** Poor Performance".)

Thanks, I'll just keep working on getting better... yeah I've never played it previously.. luckily now that it's summer I have unlimited time to work at it!

A few tips that might help:
* Glass is your friend, don't be afraid to use lots of it in buildings, it helps with lighting during the day as well.
* Decorations make all the difference, if you're not sure on ideas then think about what would make a difference in your city - eg lamp posts, benches and chairs etc, then google or youtube how to make them, most things like that are really easy to make once you know how! - For example, a simple block of glass with one wooden step each side facing it makes a great little glass table suite & a couple of red wool blocks beside beds make them seem luxurious!
* Don't use the same material for every building, mix it up, and smelting cobblestone back to regular stone looks MUCH nicer in buildings, it gives the concrete feel to them.
* Good landscaping makes a building pop... trimmings around the base, gardens & pools help any building stand out.
* Use obscure things - eg, do you realise that chests, noteblocks & furnaces can make awesome looking flooring? :), they give different patterns and you cant even tell what they are when they are boxed in... Think outside the square.
* Sizing is crucial for buildings, dont make your interiors too cluttered, you want people to have space to move around, but dont make things so ridiculously big that they look ugly, unless it is something that SHOULD be big.
If you'd like you are welcome to come to my world any time and have a look around and steal some ideas =)

it takes time... i had minecraft when all it had was cobble stone and grass (pc). that was a long time ago, now i just think what to make and i make it. its like playing a gutar. when u 1st start no madder who u r u will always suck at it. but then u get better and then it comes to a point at whitch u can just think and make.
You need to have the determination to build those great things!
In other words:
YOU GOTTA WANT IT!
I'd start at a nice, flat and level area in your world, and do you best to construct rooms with a big building, nice decorations such as water/lava fountains, behind glass maybe. Add things from your imagination, and perhaps use real world structures or other things made by fellow Minecrafters as a sort of guide for you
They didn't build Rome in a day. Like the previous poster had said, a little determination is the key to an excellent map. You cant see it as the big picture, but to add one or two buildings at a time. Over time, you will start to fill in the space, and from far away it will look as though you have your very own civilization.
Here are some tips on making way for great building...
1) Prepare yourself with wood planks and cobblestone. These two blocks are most commonly used for building and redstone mechanics. The most productive way to mine cobblestone, in my opinion, is to make a large strip-mine underground. Use the wood planks to create at least 60 ladder pieces, then make a random hole . When you've placed all of your ladders down the 60-deep hole, start digging the area out. I'd go for at least 4 blocks high, and 20x20 blocks across. You'll accumulate a large stock of cobble, while also discovering precious metals...and diamonds. Also have a handy stock of wood, so that you may make chests to hold the stone.
...As for trees, be sure to return to a recently chopped tree to collect the saplings. Plant the saplings at least 8-10 blocks (as I prefer) from one-another on dirt to provide sufficient space. Plant trees whenever possible to sustain a healthy stock in trees and wood.
2) Build your design as a "layout" by starting off with the first block on the bottom of the walls. This makes for easier planning. It's almost like making a blueprint. Work on distinctive wall decorations and roofing later, don't overwhelm yourself.
3) Don't under-measure the size of your building space. In many cases, I wind up too short of space and have to improvise by knocking down a wall or adding a balcony. However, don't space it out too much. A find that adding an extra block of space on each side provides well-enough to have sufficient space for future details.
In all essence, this is a game of trial and error. What you like now may be ugly in a few buildings ideas from then.
Thanks everybody for helping, I have some good ideas, and Princess_Zoe thank you so much, I never knew I could actually get stone from cobblestone! I've always wanted to use stone! I'll look around on youtube for ideas.
Yeah, I started the same way, not having many ideas. Try looking on youtube at other peoples creations, sometimes that will spark an idea you can work off of. I often find myself making one thing and then it eventually turning into something completely different. Just experiment with things and you will find your way. Best of luck!
One does not suck at Minecraft. Minecraft sucks you!
No, but for real. Minecraft is beautiful because it is nothing. You win the game by simply making a little dirt house and slaying some pigs. The real fun is using your imagination, hard work, and setting up your very own goals. One day, maybe decide you need yourself a dock for you to put your boats and fish. Maybe another day you want a watch tower so you can scout the land easier around you. Maybe after that you make another tower but farther down the coast. Then maybe you connect the two watch towers with a wall. After that... you get the point! This is Minecraft! The game of all games!
Sadly, you are on Xbox. You're in the past of Minecraft. Your block selection is very limited... My suggestion is - Get Minecraft for PC. It's the bomb my friend, the bomb.
I always start buildings by laying out the foundation in the shape I want the building to be. Then lay out the floor on top of thqt. Then the walls come next. Never discount the value of a well laid out floor plan.
It sounds like you aren't even trying because you feel like you won't be able to do it. That is a very bad mindset to have.
