Ahhh that Wither Boss....can be tricky at times but I've got a technique that put the odds in my favour somewhat. I dig a tunnel down to level 12 all the way to the edge of the map. After checking to make sure there's no lava underneath I build the wither 1 block out from the extreme edge of the world. This restricts the withers movement and with a enchanted sword you can generally make short work of the wither. This method tends to work for me more often than not plus the bonus diamonds sometimes found on the way is an extra perk. At the moment I've got 4 full sized beacons up and running and another 5 beacons made waiting for enough mineral blocks to activate.
I do wish the beacons had more range though. 164 blocks of iron is pretty expensive considering the 50 block range it gives you.
Anyway hope this tip helps you in your next fight.

"Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing left to add....but when there is nothing left to take away."
Cool idea. Now that you have said it I'll bet the corner edge of the world would restrict the wither in two directions. So do you kill all the withers in the same location or a new location for each because of the damage?
Same location really. Generally have a few double chests filled with just cobblestone and take a few bundles with me for the after wither battle patch up. Yes a corner edge would work even better. In addition if you've got a beacon nearby with the strenght perk you can chew through the second wither within a minute. Almost becomes a no contest fight when you've got that running.
