I know a lot of people have had a problem with this when starting work on resource packs, but I have read quite a bit about it and still can't see what I'm doing wrong. The grass_side_overlay is not picking up biome color. Or rather, it picks up only a little but remains close to grayscale. I will try to attach a pic:
You can see the difference between the grass top and side. Something similar is happening with the tallgrass image also. For the overlay I just copied the grassy part of the grass block side and used "remove color" in Photoshop. Has the way Minecraft uses the grass texures and overlays been changed, and maybe I've been reading outdated information? Is the grass_side_overlay no longer necessary, and just interfering with normal coloring?
For starters, the grass side overlay is only applied when you're in fancy graphics settings, so make sure you have that enabled.
If you remove the color from the side grass, but not the top grass, the colors aren't going to match. They both get overlayed with the biome colors, so if the colors of your top and side are different, they aren't going to match up in the game. Try leaving the color in the side grass overlay, and see if it does anything.
Strange, I see many resource packs using a side overlay but not a top overlay...why? For that matter, if you leave the color in the overlay, what is the purpose of having it? I thought it had to be in grayscale for it to be given the biome color? Or does the biome tinting just get applied to any file with the right name...like grass_side_overlay?
First, let me clear something up; the side grass texture has two files: the regular texture, and the overlay. The biome coloring is applied to the overlay, and the overlay is shown over the regular texture when you're in fancy graphics.
The top grass is also biome shaded. However, it only has the one texture file. I just wanted to clear that up, I may have confused you a bit there.
The side overlay and the top textures are grayscale by default, but they do not have to be grayscaled. The biome colors will be applied over them anyhow, no matter what colors they are. However, you'll get much richer colors if you don't grayscale them, and use some color that will look nice when biome shaded.

Any help will be much appreciated
