I have a new type of Resource Pack Challenge for you today: to reimagine a Minecraft biome as whatever you can texture! You'll be taking a pre-existing biome and altering its textures and lore to create something awesome. At the end of TWO WEEKS (Jan. 31) we will have a poll voting on the best new biome.
Rules
There are no restrictions on style, resolution, or available tools.
You must do at least 15 natural blocks (not textures) for your biome. If that seems like a lot, remember that underground counts as well. You may do as many texture as you want.
You must also do at least 3 mob textures of creatures that you think should go in your biome.
You may use MCPatcher to enhance your biome, but it must be usable without. Vanilla block models are totally acceptable. (Of course you can use MCPatcher to restrict your textures to the one biome)
You need 3 screenshots (not renders, no shaders allowed) showcasing your textures.
I really like this idea. A nice creativity-oriented challenge that's not restrictive on art style and incorporates elements other than the same boring blocks over and over again. If I can think of an idea, I'm definitely entering this one!
And now... to actually come up with a good idea. Weeeee!
Is the original deadline going to stand? It doesn't seem like there's a lot of interest, and I'm fairly certain I'm not going to have time to finish an entry due to surprise being-at-work time I've got coming up tomorrow.
Since nobody has posted anything, I think maybe an extension would be in order. Just a suggestion.

Yuppers.
Things are slow around here... extension would be much appreciated. Maybe until the end of february?
Also, I know the title is "Natural World Challenge", but let's not forget about the more "artificial" approaches that people have taken to biomes, a-la-Broken Ananchronism and Glimmar's Steampunk!
So here's what I've done. I've made a 16x16 spooky styled pack. It turns the spruce forest into a haunted forest.
Blocks: dirt, tall fern, fern, dandelion, rose, grass, spruce leaves, spruce logs, brown mushroom, red mushroom, pumpkin, sand, stone, tall grass and vine
Mobs: zombie (blanket ghost), skeleton (Frankenstein) and creeper (meant to blend in with the trees)
MCPatcher: Allows for a darker sky, darker foliage, CTM so that there are faces on the trees, CTM so that there are eyeballs on the grass and allows for a more dark lighting.
This entry isn't finished, but I wanted to post progress if for no other reason than to get some feedback and motivate myself to actually finish this silly thing! Thus far I've completed ten block textures (dirt, grass, tall grass, dandelion, rose bush, oak log, oak leaves, birch log, and birch leaves) and zero mob textures. Hopefully I can get five more blocks and three mobs finished before Friday.
Because I'm doing this in the same general style as "Sanity" I think this is eventually going to morph into a Halloween add-on pack for that pack. The way I'm headed, though, It'll almost be a complete retooling of the regular version. Don't worry, though. Absolutely nothing in this contest entry is taken from my existing work. It's 100% original made for this contest.
Feedback is appreciated, though looking at the unsettling screenshot and telling me I need psychiatric help is not really useful in improving my art.

You need psychiatric help. ;P In all seriousness, though, I like it. I'm not too sure about the green in the grass, although it is growing on me.

I wanted it to just seem kinda gross and unsettling. Like it's the kind of thing you really wouldn't walk on given the choice. Hopefully that touch of green gives it that slightly slimy unclean look I was going for. Let me know if it keeps growing on you. We'll see about getting it removed.
Return to the Dead Lands
With the completion of the Poppy, Paeonia, Stone, Coal Ore, and Iron Ore this entry is now up to the requisite 15 block textures. Hopefully later today and/or tomorrow I'll be able to knock out the remaining three mob textures to have a finished entry.
Here are my three images meaning that my entry is now complete! Do note that I changed a few things since the original screenshots, so these are the "official" versions for my entry.
The complete list of blocks and mobs are as follows: dirt, grass, tall grass, double tall grass, dandelion, rose bush, oak log, oak leaves, birch log, birch leaves, poppy, paeonia, stone, coal ore, iron ore, rabbit (white), zombie, and chicken.
Even though this is likely to be the final version, feedback is always greatly appreciated.
At least in the screenshots, the dead branches look rather convincing.
This was a HUGE deal for me starting this out, so much so that I swore I wouldn't bother with this concept if I couldn't get them looking good. I knew that that would be the make-or-break feature of the pack so I took my time and did my best. Your comment really validates all of the effort I put into getting them to look good. Thank you so much!
A destroyed moon orbits an irradiated, snowy wasteland. The green you see is not life, but radioactive elements decaying slowly.
Stripped of their skin, these skeletal monstrosities stalk the desert. A rare sight, but tough to fend off. Ancient petrified trees sink lower into the ground each day as they accumulate snow.
Uranium crystals poison the land. Crates of them are littered about along with cast-off monitors, infecting the few living beings. A rare sentient being of uranium rods floats slowly by, freezing to death in agony.

I like the idea, its nice and creative, but sadly I don't have time to spare to work on it
Sounds like fun! I will have to see if I have the time to do it. But when I do, I will definitely try!

Looks stunning, great work! And you do not need to supply a download.

Any update on this? Is there going to be a vote, or are there too little packs to vote?
...
I am a big dum-dum, I'm adding a poll now.
The poll is up! Vote NOW on your favorite pack!
No problem Should I post to the TAU, asking people to vote?
Sure thing.
