So, I have been thinking about this a lot lately. Which resolution is best for Minecraft?
I think it is 16x16. Although I love the beauty in high-def texture packs, all the detail causes them to look grainy, noisy, and cluttered at a distance. 16x16 allows more consistency throughout the game. However, I want to hear your opinion.
The Meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything.
The only 2 good 64x + TPs IMO are Sphax and Steelfeather's Dragon's Dance. Most of them look a bit too much for MC. I know photo-realistic TPs have their audiences so I'm not gonna bash them if they like them.
Other than that, I'm not really a TP artist, so I can't make any judgments from that perspective, but I've seen a lot more high-quality 32x TPs than higher resolutions than that. 16x ones can look nice sometimes, but they don't have much space to express some complicated textures.
16x is too constrictive, though it probably fits best with the cube-built landscape.
32x still fits on the squares legitimately, and gives much more freedom. So many styles can be done fantastically in 32x, so it's probably my favorite.
64x starts to look pasted on the blocks, though many styles can still fit in with the cube-built landscape and work even better than many 16x or 32x packs.
I cannot speak for any higher, due to computer limitations, though vector-based packs need to be larger than 32x, with 64x being the bare minimum.
If you ask me, 32x is where it's at. Like the others before me said, it offers you enough freedom to do what you want, and while 16x and lower have their charm, they're too restrictive.
As for 64x and above start to look too grainy... Some 64x packs are nice (even though i can't use them due to hardware limitations), but anything bigger makes the game look like the Uncanny Valley.
I'd go for 8x or 16x, yes they have some limatations but they're fantastic to work with... But to be honest I can play with any resoloution (apart from 512x because of hardware limits) but I never to past 128x... You could say I'm an all rounder when playing with resolutions
I'm a big fan of 16x. Anything much higher than that changes the aesthetic of the game too much for my liking. Besides, with 16x you can make a pack that doesn't require mods and is instead enhanced by them which is convenient for a lot of people.
I've also used 32x packs in the past, but that's as high as I'll go. Even then, I usually find myself grating my teeth in the inconsistency between the pack's textures and my player skin or the textures of the mods I have installed. Grrr...
It's not really a matter of what's "best", just what is enjoyed by the greatest number of people.
16x -: easy to make simplistic but very restrictive.
32x : can be difficult to make but it allows more freedome to create things.
64x : if done right it looks amazing, if wrong it becomes grainy. Hard to do but very versatile.
I'm not experinced in anything above 64x so whats below may not be accurate.
128x : very versatile but very hard to do. If done really good it won't look as grainy but most of the time it does.
256x : ultra-versatile but extremely hard to not make grainy.
512x + : you can practically make anything but it will be grainy.
