I must have spent months wading through the Minecraft Texture Pack forum exploring my pixely options for blocky eyecandy. I think I tried most styles from HD to cartoon, from dark RPG variants to the simple even-more-obvious-pixel-on-a-block style but what I always looked out for was the really fun, bright and quirky texture packs. These were the ones that embodied how I view minecraft. However I could never settle on any of them. I always juggled between the collection I had compiled. While I loved all of them I couldn't help but be critical as I explored my block filled world with thoughts like 'If only that was..'and 'I would've done that differently'. And I realised that with my pretentious, judgemental and obsessive for detail frame of mind I could easily create a texture pack that I would want to play minecraft in.
That last sentence was how I thought about a year ago. Now I think that its bloody difficult as this remains largely unfinished with my glaring judgemental at what I have created. So now instead of continuing work off my confused mind I want to turn to others for feedback and, albiet not too harsh, their judgement to direct my progress from here on out.
-Compatible with Minecraft 1.4.2
-Replaced Log End (unrefined)
-Replaced Fern (unrefined)
-Added Water Still (unanimated)
-Added Reeds (unrefined)
-Altered Foliage Biome colours (Trees in Mountain biomes are more lush)
-Altered Dirt (Tiles a little better with itself and with grass side)
-Altered Birch Wood Planks (unrefined, going for a more weathered, peeled paint look)
-Altered Jungle Wood Planks (added a little shading, theres more I want to do to it but I really just wanted to get this out)
-Removed stray pixels on both Red Flower and Dead Bush
-Replaced Grass Top
-Replaced Cobblestone (still blue for now)
-Replaced Mossy Cobblestone
-Added Crafting Table
-Added Bedrock (Is the old Netherbricks texture, not really sure what to do with it so I'm just shuffling it around)
-Altered Light Map (Sun is brighter, shadows bluer with a thin vibrant pink line separating them. Sunrise and sunset transition should be improved too).
-Altered Grass and Foliage Biome colours
-Altered Leaves (subtle)
-Altered Bricks (just mucking around)
-Altered Pavement Side (Unrefined, just had to get rid of old cobblestone plus allow pavement to be stacked in a pillar without looking dumb)
-Integrated CTM for Grass Top (really basic, just the same texture rotated, was my little test to see how CTM worked)
-Removed Sandstone Side
I've added in a screenshot from one of those texture showcase maps, hopefully that'll help show the content of the pack. Unfortunately it also shows all the textures that still need to be done let alone the refinement many of the existing textures need. I'm mainly looking at you, ores.
just played with this pack on... and its beautiful.... everything looks EPIC! but... the ores don't tile with the stone that well! to go through some things I wuv, the stone... looks so god damn awesome and its blue! it so much better than the dreary gray stone I see a lot... the dirt, jesus christ so damn diggity awesome! the mushrooms so awesome... the wooden planks, wow... slabs... so freaking EPIC, stone bricks are just WIN! jesus christ this is the most positive I've been about a new texture pack...
Oh, man. This is amazing.
I have to critique this. Later. After I toy with it for a while. And wake up more.
Though, off the bat, I can't help but feel that the doorframe color is going to look good with regular wooden planks.
And I'm not entirely sure how I feel about blue stone.
And Netherbrick is very not bricky.
And jungle planks remind me a lot about Johnsmith.
I sneezed 8 times while writing that out.
... Make that 9.
10 while taking out some of the space.
This looks... pretty enough, let's take a closer look...
Daamn, the screenshots don't do it any justice!
-Sprites (However there's this odd stray dark pixel at a certain angle on the blue mushroom)
-Nature blocks in general (Especially birches)
-A great many deal of blocks have tilling issues, please fix that
-The nether bricks are under-detailed, and would be better suited for netherrack (too rough!)
-I feel that the blue stone, while very original, clashes against the other blocks too much to use in buildings. The same applies for cobblestone, which is impossible to use in construction without making it an eye sore now. Keep the tint, but desaturate it so that it doesn't stand out so much.
-Sandstone is just ugly. Looks more like petrified foam
-Wool has those bright pixels that are waaay too saturated compared to the rest of the block. Tone it down a little
-The off-center log top is messing my OCD really bad
-I think the wooden door would be more functional with a window, but that's your choice.
Yes! Loving the feedback. I'll see if I can't get the tiling issues fixed for next release and I'll remove some of those textures that really shouldn't have been left in the pack, ie sandstone-side and chest (not sure if I left that one in or not). Also don't look directly at the jungle textures. You're bang on right about the cobble balduran, which pains me because its the texture I've spent most of my time scrapping and starting over. So I'm not looking forward to going back to it. I think I must've gone through 15 or so different versions for that one.
I'm a real fan of the blue smooth stone found in caves (I've personally never used smooth stone in constructions before). I really wanted a contrast with really warm tones above ground and really cool, cold tones below ground. I always liked the transition when exiting one of these caves with blue skys and vibrant tree tops peeking through at the end of the cold tunnel. Unfortunately the blue tone has to then logically carry over to the cobblestone which has always been a pain. I'm going to revert the texture back to one of my previous ones and polish it up a litte. It's a little more desaturated and hopefully looks like it has a better place in constructions.
Thanks onewingedpie for the kind words, I think I was glowing after I read that. And yea, I want to scrap the ores and start over.
Haha nice screenshot Anthony. Was hoping it would like something like that with the shaders. Haven't had a chance to try it out myself. As much as I'm tempted to ask if I can use those shots in the OP I've already told myself that I didn't want the shaders mod to be a factor in peoples opinion making when they first view the pack.
