There is already a tool that does this at http://mcslimes.appspot.com/ but I wanted to make one that wasn't a Java applet. And I wanted to tweak the interface. And it was fun to make.
BUGS: Please post them here along with your browser and OS
The slime finder works perfectly except when you mouse over the slime chunk it gives you the wrong coordinates. It for example gives you (-192,-592) to (-175,-544) for the world seed 1674099425551988884. The issue is that (-175,-544) is located in the correct chunk at the button right corner. But the other end (-192,-592) is wrong as it belongs to the chunk diagonally up to the left (that is the right button spot on another chunk). I might be wrong and its the other way around. But I used McEdit and removed the chunk to check what the chunk edges are. The chunk edges should reed (-191,-591) to (-175,-544). The upper right edge coordinates is off by 1.
I had allot of trouble figuring it out. Would be nice to have this small issue updated so others don't make the same mistake as I did and make there slime farm off by a few like I did.
Those are real-valued coordinates. They correspond to the lines between chunks. This makes it very simple to find the chunk boundaries in game without worrying about off-by-one mistakes. When your coordinates are between the values given by the slime finder, you're in the chunk. When you cross the exact coordinate from the slime finder, you're crossing chunks.
When I get a chance, I will add some text to the tool that explains this.
I also did some experiments with torches and how they affected the spawn. I covered the entire spawn area with torches and above it I made a regular spawn pad made of glow stone and one of regular stone. 3 levels. Maybe I got impatient and didn't watch them for to long but they spawned evenly across all 3 levels. So torches didn't affect the spawn-rate. But I suspect that glow stone inside the spawn-pad might be better.
If you want to see torches completely block spawning, you also need to fill all the blocks surrounding the spawn pad for 20 blocks out, at the same level as the torches. If there are no air blocks in that range, nothing will spawn.
Their behavior was also strange. They didn't mind jumping of the ledges and into the void unlike regular mobs that stop after moving to the edge. It is as if slimes don't bother jumping of a ledge. So this means you don't need to place signs along the outer edges of a spawn pad. They will jump off the ledge mindlessly. The smaller slimes also had no problems climbing ladders if the ladder was encased in a 1x1 hole. Simply needed to push them into the ladder via water streams. I think it might have something to do with the ladder glitch where if two entity's are inside the ladder they start to push each other upwards similar to the mine cart glitch.
Slime AI is very simple. They just hop in a straight line, and only change direction to chase a player that comes within 16 blocks. If a player never comes in range, they will never turn from the direction they were facing when they spawned.
Using 2 space clearance you get 4 pads but one issue is that the bottom pad will have to be only 1 level above the water streams so you have to be clever with how you place the water streams so the slimes don't clime back up on the pads.
You can make water streams at ground level using pressure plates to hold it in. Angle the water towards the wall and it will hold the slimes better. They can hop fast enough to fight the current, but if you cut a 2-high groove in the wall, the water will push them under it and they won't be able to hop.
Sorry but that sounds very complicated to me and probably others to. Would be nice if you could explain this in coordinate terms. Give an example.
-192,-592 is still in the wrong chunk it should at least say (> -192,> -592) or something. Lets just say that it took me 3 hours to get it right and I'm sure others have either done the same mistake as I have and made there spawn pad in the wrong location.
I added instructions to the page that hopefully make it clear. -192,-592 is not in any chunk, it is an infinitely small point where 4 chunks meet. You are thinking in integral coordinates, but that isn't what the F3 screen shows. I think this will be easier for people who aren't programmers.
This is really interesting but 2 high groove. Is that enough for the small slimes to?. And how deep does the groove have to be. 2 x 2 deep?
It seems to work. The little ones get sucked into my trap somehow. It's on the same level as the water. The diagomal current keeps them in the groove.
Another bug. Using Google Chrome, when I put in my seed ("Brave New World"), your script changes it to -4603979502, while the java applet changes it to -309012206. I am sure -309012206 is the right one, 'cause I had built my farm there and it worked. Any clues?
Yep, it seems to be broken for some non-numeric seeds. I'll fix that asap. In the interrim, use the other tool to convert seeds to numbers.

Is this working for 1.0? I ttried it but no slims spawned. My seed is a negative number - don't know if that makes a difference. I tried it in 3 chunks with no luck. play SP survival and switch from peaceful to easy when I want to farm mobs.

I just checked some negative seeds and they match between my tool and the other one, so I assume it's working. There are a lot of things that can go wrong with a mob trap. And slimes are so rare that if your trap isn't working at max efficiency, you might go a long time without seeing one.
I used this, and it works great. I have one suggestion though.
Could you add a feature, that we could use to find X adjacent slime chunks, within a set radius of a location?
I assume this would mean alot of processing, but it would be nice to be able to find close slime chunks, for when you want to make a mega farm.
Or even better, a button to find the most concentrated slime chunk area within a set radius of a location. Let us define "most concentrated" as "must be touching", or "could be scattered".
Thanks for what you did so far, it is great. What do you think of the suggestions?

For sure, that is a killer feature, and entirely doable. When you zoom out, it's checking 2304 chunks per frame, and I suspect the drawing is still using most of the time. I would imagine it can check at least 50000 chunks per second, so it should be able to search the largest range you could ever want in just a few seconds. I'll try to work it in there.
EDIT: Problem is, I can't figure out how the UI should work. If you specify the range and number of chunks, it could find many instances, so how does it show them all to you?

Perhaps it searches in a spiral fashion from the center, and only shows you the closest one. If it goes past your range, it stops?
So when you type your coords, the range, the number together, you wait.. Then it displays the coords it finds, and shows them on the map.
This worked perfectly for me! I was able to find a slime chunk right next to my house (I'm so glad it is close!). At first I thought it was broken because nothing was spawning, but I guess I just didn't wait long enough on easy (I'm usually on peaceful during the night, hunting mobs in a dark overhang in the day on easy). But after being on easy for two minecraft days straight I started to get slimes! Thank you so much for making this!

I don't think this works for the 360 version buddy.
I've tried this on my PC (I.E/windows 7) and I can't get the grid happening. The grid is not there at all??
Any suggestions?
Internet explorer is your problem there. Try chrome or firefox. Both work perfectly. And I'm fairly sure this works for xbox seeds. However, I could be wrong!
I tried ti use this application, but when I entered my seed and coordinates the grid showed up blank. I can see the coordinates written on the outside but it doesn't show me the actual grid, so I don't know where the chunks are.Can anyone help?
I have just found out about this tool and it seems when I typed in my information the grid didn't even pop up to show slime chunks. Can you help me out?
For the people who don't see the grid, what browser are you using? If it's an IE issue, I can't say when or if I will have a chance to fix it. I use a Mac and I just don't have easy access to IE. I do have a Windows machine kicking around here somewhere. If I get a chance, I will hook it up and try to fix this.

Make it any size you want
more space = more slime
