Will this community ever sease to amaze me? "Reads first post again" Guess not, I hope that it never will.
I'm speechless again, though one nitpick. Try to make it so that the automap rotates so that you're arrow is always facing up since ingame you're always looking through the eyes, or over the should of your avatar.

I hope we can do that too.
By the way, I forgot to mention in the original post, this is being done in the Microsoft XNA framework, so it will only run on Windows, but it will run much better than anything we could have pulled off in Java. Sorry if that disappoints anyone. As nice as it would have been to make this automap cross-platform, XNA was the only option that made sense given our prior experience and time constraints.
The good news is, I do intend to give Linux and OSX users a map for single player by extending my already-existing Minecraft Map Java client that currently works only with SMP servers. I may even give the Java client some very basic automapping functionality if it doesn't cause too much of a slowdown - just something to use in a pinch in case you do not have a Cartograph map handy.
Cool I can't wait. Maybe you should make it optional for if the person what's the arrow/map to rotate or not.
Absolutely, it will be optional. It requires considerably more blocks to be processed in order to rotate the map without creating blank areas, so I suspect it will hurt performance a bit to have it on.
Will this application run in tandem with Minecraft? I feel that it would be useless otherwise as Cartograph would be much better and an ingame automap was already shut down.
From the screenshots and the description you can see that it would work alongside Minecraft.

Whos ingame automap was shut down? This runs beside Minecraft but uses a mod on the client to send map information out via a networking Socket.
the other in game map program was shutdown from distributing I guess modified files sort like what we do server side but notch takes client side serious.
