Yes, it's a 64 bit program, it can not run on a 32 bit OS.
Well, then I guess that answers why some of us are getting that checkerboard problem. If this version of Minutor is exclusively a 64-bit OS program, then those of us with 32-bit OS are S.O.L, despite our support of this mapping program.
Gotta say, I am gravely disappointed. I would think that the creator of this program would have taken into account that there are those of us out there who don't have or use a 64-bit OS. Perhaps, in the future, this will be taken into consideration, and the rest of us can download a more compatible version of Minutor.
However, if this is not to be the case, and the 32-bit OS users will continue to be ignored and ostracized, then I will bit farewell to this mapping program.
It was good while it lasted.
SO, next time, instead of telling the users "Its your problem, not mine," maybe try looking deeper into the issue before trying to make the users of your program feel like you're turning your back on them.
Just checking back, and I see there are others like me with this checkerboard issue.
So...
Doesn't seem to be the case since this is no longer an isolated issue.

I can understand your frustration. First off, I'd like to mention I am not the creator of this program, just to clear up any confusion on that issue. I just use the program and try to help out here and answer questions if I know the answer.
The reason the program is now 64 bit is to be able to use enough memory to show a large map in full screen without lag. Otherwise, the program could only use a small window and if you increased it's size beyond a certain limit, it would behave strangely or crash due to running out of 32 bit memory space.
Beyond the usual and sometimes callous advice to "upgrade your operating system to 64 bit" or the even more callous and less useful advice to "compile your own version, the source code is up on github" (both I have gotten myself when asking similar questions on other programs) there is no other option except to use the older 32 bit version that is available on http://seancode.com/minutor/ at the bottom of the page under older versions.
I hope that helps at least a little.
Another option I just thought of, is Unmined, available here http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1171344-142-unmined-fast-live-mapper-tool/ it does some things differently than Minutor, one nice feature is it lets you zoom out to see an entire world in one screen. But, it takes a long time to load a world, especially a larger one as it scans the entire world file first. It also will generate a lot of files in the world save folder as it creates all the graphics ahead of time (or something). Once it is done, though, it is very fast. I'm pretty sure it supports Minecraft worlds newer than 1.7.2, but I have not tested it on one yet. The developer version may where the stable version doesn't, I'm not sure on that.

I'm running a 64 bit system with Windows 7.
Strangely enough I'm getting the opposite problem compared to others here.
Version 2.01 works fine although I don't like it as well as I do v1.6.3.
Version 1.6.3 however gives me the checkerboard problem on any world built with PCMC v1.7.2 or above.
Also if I open an older world with 1.6.3 everything is fine UNTIL I play that world with a v1.7.2 or newer version of Minecraft, after that I get the checkerboard problem.
It's like the newer MC versions do something to the data structure that Minutor1.6.3 can't handle.
And yet I haven't been able to find any difference in the data structures between older Anvil world data structures and ones created or modified by MC v1.7.2 and above.

is there a way to import MapWriterBlockColours.txt from MapWriter to Minutor pack?

Not automatically, I don't think, unless someone who has some programming experience to be able to write a little utility that could do it. It wouldn't be too complicated I don't think, but then I'm not a programmer. The thing that might be tricky is figuring out what color format the mapwriter mod is using, the colors appear to have too many digits, eight, for an RGB value that minutor uses, which is six. Also, mapwriter doesn't identify what the block is, just what it's ID number is. But you could at least get the colors correct from it. Minutor doesn't care if there are line returns in it's JSON files, so you could use a spreadsheet program and load the map writer color file into it with some format fiddling and then create new fields to match the information that minutor needs. I might just do that, but there's probably no way to explain it or automate it.

Okay I have given a shot at trying to fix this. I de-installed Minutor, Minecraft and re-installed; still have the checkerboard effect. I then exported the Json definition pack files from a working Minutor setup( both machines are 64 bit Win 7 Pro btw) and imported; still no good. Both machines are at Minecraft loader 1.4.7 and Minecraft 1.7.10 ; one works the other doesn't. Both machines are at same current Win 7 updates. Anyone got any clues???

I don't know, that's weird, I forget if Minutor uses Java or if it's another program language. Maybe be sure Java is the same on both? Not sure if it uses that though, it may be a dot net program, or something else, but it is strange that some people are getting a problem where it seems Minutor doesn't know where it's definition files are.
Until mrkite77 can answer, if he's even updating this anymore, that's all I've got.

So that's where it stores that information, the User folder. Probably that's all you had to delete was that, might have gotten corrupted or messed up somehow. Nice info to have, thanks.
Ok first off I love this map app! but the new 2.0 and 2.0.1 updates are giving me trouble... I download them (on a older mad laptop running 10.6.8 I think it is) and when it downloads the app has the circle with a lign through it showing i can't open it. Sure enough after I drag the app into applications and arter it downloads, Ir says I can't run this program. I am able to run 1.6.3 and all the older versions just fine though. Any ideas why anybody? Anything I can try? I need to use the newer versions for my modded worlds thanks!

Sounds like you're on a mac? The newer versions of Minutor are 64 bit, is your OS 64 bit? If not, it won't be able to run the newer versions of Minutor.

Gahhh yes that's exactly the problem. After I re-read the whole thread I noticed the recent part about the 64-bit. I dislike that very very much as the older versions worked great and now of course when I need the newer version to add my own files for the mod, they change up the program and it doesnt work! Poop! Well guess I'm back on the hunt to find a working/editable map viewer to use for my Terrafirmacraft :/
64 bit was needed to allow the map to show at larger sizes at full zoom, there's no way around it, 32 bit just doesn't have the memory space available.
Unmined is a decent mapper, though it has strange ideas about color, and has a few neat features. Does run on 32 bit as far as I know. But, there's no mac version that I can see. You might want to check this page http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Programs_and_editors/Mapping#Mappers and see if any of the ones listed there work for you.

Could anyone explain how the definitions work and how I could go about editing them? My goal is create a map that just has flat colors for each biome although I'm not sure if that is possible to create in Minutor, any help would be appreciated!
Win 7 64 bit, was having the problem that Minutor would just crash on me when trying to load a map(Vanilla MC 1.8, 24,000 blocks x 24,000 blocks map size). Deleted the C:\ Users \ USERNAME XXX \ App Data\ local \ seancode folder(with all subfolders and included files), did NOT reinstall after doing that, no problems now! I had re-installed Minutor 2.01 before trying that, though I didn't update from any prior version.
Unmined - Decent program, good if you want to explore, or put a "History class" themed map on your screen(the colors remind me of history textbooks), loads up pretty quick, but I'll stick with Minutor cause of the lovely *.png export option.
Why not make an apps/site that contain color code for most mods and unlocalized name, like crowley.skyblock, dust, so that people just have to upload their item.csv from NEI to get an instant definition pack for their modPack?
That would be just plainly awesome, and make this mod VERY easy to use, no matter the config of the person (since almost everybody include NEI nowaday)
It would not be a dependency, but just a cross-mod feature "easily" implementable, as no modification need to be done, just a lot of work that could be done by community, since some already have those config.
Just an idea

I made myself a little PHP code that use Mapwriter's color file and NEI's itempanel.csv to create a Custom.json for Minutor to read.
I would suggest someone making a mod that does what Mapwriter do: scanning every block and tile, get the texture for each and make a color and alpha transparency from it, and create the necessary json for Minutor to read. And while there, why not make the dimension and biome json too.
I'd do it if I knew how, but I only know PHP and basic VB.Net, and have no clue how to code for MC.
Just an idea, if someone could do it, for 1.6.4 would be the best lol

1) from control panel -> programs - uninstalled Minutor
2) Deleted Minutor subfolder in C:\Programs Files (x86), if this was not already deleted by the uninstall...
3) Deleted seancode subfolder in C:\ Users \ USERNAME XXX \ App Data\ local \ , this removed the \seancode and \Minutor subfolder underneath
4) Reinstalled Minutor, this time in, C:\Minutor
Tested and worlds are now viewable....
Love this program!!!
