I've been a longtime modded Minecraft consumer, going back to Tekkit classic before it was Tekkit classic. Tons of great mods everywhere. A lot have incorporated gems and jewels and crystallized minerals and magic, but I never stumbled across a mod that really focused on jewel-crafting as a whole. My desire to play with shiny things coupled with the fact that knowing Java could never be a bad thing, I have come up with this idea for a jewel focused mod inspired by the Diablo 3 Gem system.
Now, onto what we have so far.
Gems will have a specific effect unique to the type of gem. Some will be a toggle, others will be an activated buff lasting for a minute at base level. Gems will be consumable, with a durability that increases with the strength of the gem. To start, there will be 3 tiers of gems; Fragmented, Chipped, and a whole version of the gem. You are able to up-convert 3 of a single tier into 1 of a higher tier by crafting the 3 pieces with an Infusion Catalyst, a stepping stone item that will be able to catalyze 100 conversions before it degrades back to dust. This is crafted with vanilla valuables, a diamond, four lapis, and 4 redstone dust.
I have decided on 9 different types of gems to start. I have 4 Combat effect oriented gems, and 5 Utility gems. The initial method for obtaining these gems will be a machine played off of Thermal Expansion machines. This is the Ore Tumbler. It will consume ores and produce gems on an initial 20% conversion rate, meaning for every 5 ore you plug in, you will average one gem produced. The initial items required to craft the Ore Tumbler will be a Machine Frame, Redstone Reception Coil, Piston, and two Buckets. Compatible ores are based off of Thermal Foundation for increased variety.
Now, the actual gems in question:
Combat Gems
Sapphire, tumbled from Gold Ore.
Provides increased health regeneration.
Ruby, tumbled from Ferrous Ore.
Provides increased damage.
Emerald, tumbled from Silver Ore.
Provides increased movement speed.
Alexadrite, tumbled from Shiny/Platinum Ore.
Provides increased damage resistance.
Utility Gems
Malachite, tumbled from Copper Ore.
Consumes bonemeal or fertilizer to grow plants around the user.
Garnet, tumbled from Tin Ore.
Toggle, provides Aqua Affinity.
Hematite, tumbled from Iron Ore.
Provides Fire Resistance.
Galena, tumbled from Lead Ore.
Toggle, provides Mining Haste.
Moissanite, tumbled from Mithril Ore.
Provides Feather Falling.
Each tier of gem will provide an increased effect, of course. I have based 8 of the 9 on potion effects already in the game for simplicity, and there are enough items in existing mods that affect plant growth that I should be able to scavenge a way to make the Malachite work.
Seeing as I am completely new to Java, despite having tinkered with other programming languages and modding programs (read: html, bethesda, rts map editors), this is going to initially be a brainstorming and feedback thread regarding my mod as I develop it. Suggestions are more than welcome as such.
Currently working on:
Ore Tumbler,
Infusion Catalyst,
Getting proper durability damage to register per gem effect,
