Years ago, prior to vanilla horses being patched into the game, there were two mods which added Horse Functionality. The first, and more popular of these, was Mo Creatures, which included a whole host of creatures and monsters, and horses were merely a part of that mod. This mod proved so popular that it's horse functionality was added into the Vanilla game.
The second was an exclusively horse focused mod. It added a few different kinds of horse, each with their own unique advantages and disadvantages, and had an immersive method for taming. It also included things like carts to pull, and even a caravan you could sleep in. That mod was Simply Horses, by Avidavi
It is my humble opinion that, of the systems for having horses, Simply Horses simply did it better. The experience was fun, the horses had personality, and were both easy to use and made sense. I consider them superior to Vanilla Horses in every way.
Unfortunately, for unknown reasons, the developer left the forums after Vanilla Horses were implemented, and the mod has not been updated. As there is no open source code, it is also prevented from being updated by any other modders.
What I'm asking for is one or both of two things.
1) I would LOVE to see someone take up this kind of mod again. Not the original simply horses, but the spirit of it. To bring us an immersive, fun Horse Mod that does the job right once more. While it wouldn't have to be a total remake of the old mod, something holding as close to Simply Horses would, I feel, be for the best. This is, however, a really big thing to ask of any Modder . . . so.
2) While I don't know much about modding, this is a cause worthy of taking it up. I, however, don't even know where to start. I'd be willing to help out another modder, or to simply be tutored and pointed in the right direction for the things I'd need to do to bring this concept back to life. The first step is, of course, cutting the mod up into several discrete 'goals'.
In order of simplicity and priority . . .
Change the vanilla horse model to one closer to the SH model. SH just holds to the Minecraft Aesthetic much better than Mo Creatures, and thus, Vanilla horses does, I feel. A lot of what I miss was just how it looked, and a lot of what I don't like about vanilla horses is how out of place and clumsy they look.
Fix the riding system. The Vanilla horse riding system is, IMO, rather crap. The player and the horse are fixed looking the same direction, and the horse doesn't really move like a horse, nor does the player guide the horse like one. This is, easily, this is tied with the aesthetic as the biggest issue I have.
Taming and Breeding. A much lower priority than the other two, this would be the fleshing out stage. Vanilla Horse breeds aren't all that bad, but I miss the Arabian, Mustang, and Clydesdale. Similarly, the Vanilla taming method isn't all that bad, either. But I would enjoy something of a more indepth process, perhaps merging the two methods.
Cards and Wagons. Last on the list because, from my limited knowledge, it seems like they'd be the trickiest part to implement.
Anyway. I just thought I'd put this up here, and maybe, just maybe, somebody will pick it up. I can't be the only one who misses that old mod (particularly given that the thread was actually last commented in November of last year, before it was locked).
I just want to point out: I am unable to get Simply Horses to work with my MultiMC copy of 1.5.2, so I'm starting to feel like recreating the mod might well be the only way to get to even play it at all.
I don't know if bumping is okay, but I really want to see something like this done, and I still haven't figured out how to do it on my own. Help would be appreciated.
I was a huge fan of this mod back in the day, and I've just been WAITING for someone to post this. Thank you for that. Now, I am willing to be part of a team, particularly your team since you started the thread, to try and learn coding and remake this mod as practice. I could start with models, since that requires a little less coding experience. maybe some textures. And animations. But the coding? I'll need props for that. Lots of props. I'm a fast learner but not an independent one, ya get me?

My particular interest lies with the functionality of carts and trains. It'll be tricky to code, but not impossible. I will try.
The only thing I can see with the riding system being changed is the added functionality of causing damage to mobs (ie. running them over with a darn horse), and cart linkage. I say this because the vanilla way was actually implemented for simplicity. It added a 'feel to ride' so to speak, by making it different from riding pigs. If you would like to change this, go ahead, but it's not particularly my interest because I have no clue where you're going with this. Open to suggestions, maybey?
Changing horse models? I know the vanilla ones are poopy, but it was just meant to be, I swear! model replacements for existing entities are less compatible with other mods, which breaks the purpose of modding, when it conflicts with another such mod. Bad idea, kinda'. I think.
Idea: What if the vanilla horse breeds could be used as all 3 types of Avii's horses? Like, you could ride them, AND link them to carts? AND the vanilla breeding implementation of horses already allows you to breed faster ones. Perhaps code something in to display the speed of a particular horse? I wonder.
As a matter of fact, I have been working that does this very thing which is functional (at least in the general sense). I am somewhat new to modding, I would greatly appreciate any help. Here is a link of the op, I have also provided a link to the source code.
I was a MASSIVE fan of this mod. Back in those days, this was on of two mods I always, used, along with Atmosmobs. I even made a (terrible) banner for the mod, which is in the OP.
If somebody remade this mod, I would love to help all I can. I can model and texture, but not anything else.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I was trying to fit Heimskr's speech into this place, but it wouldn't fit.

I'm afraid that I, myself, have no idea how to code. If I did, I'd probably have started on a mod such as this a while ago, back when I first recomended the idea, even. However, in order.
* Wagons and Carts really are the main selling point, but most difficult part of the mod. I don't even know where to start with that, so . . . yeah.
* Causing damage to mobs is an okay start, and was the function of one of the horse breeds. The problem, as I see it, is that the current default system feels . . . well, frankly, like crap. The horse does not feel like a horse. It's a speed boost. One that leaves me unable to see directly infront, and moves really oddly. Perhaps an alternative would be to have horses move a bit like boats? But the current movement system is just terrible. Worse, I'd wager that it precludes the use of wagons or carts.
* I know they're poop. And I frankly refuse to see it as anything other than poop. They just look bad. The Simply Horses ones looked better. If it's even something so simple as just turning off spawning of the default mobs and enabling the mod's horses, that'd be a-ok by me. Probably harder, maybe not. But god I want to get rid of those ugly horses.
* This part probably comes entirely down to taste, but I definetly feel that the variety SH offered was a good place between complication and simplicity. An Arabian looked faster. A mustang tougher, and a Clydesdale like it was meant to pull stuff. That was pretty much simple enough, I feel.
As a matter of fact, I have been working that does this very thing which is functional (at least in the general sense). I am somewhat new to modding, I would greatly appreciate any help. Here is a link of the op, I have also provided a link to the source code.
Cool! I'll keep an eye on that!
Sorry that this is all I can offer. But hopefully the more interest there is, the more someone more capable might see it!
Fewh Fewh, Look at the dust here! I know this is probably WAY against
the rules but I have ground breaking news for this topic! (That and June
is at least in this calendar year so I shouldn't be too bad off.)
So here it is, I managed to get in contact with Lil Avii and she says that she will join the development of this remake! (Which I kinda feel joined with the team at the github above?)
So if anyone around here is interested, come join us on the github/skype so we can get this ball a-roll'n again! (or resurrect this thread? Wouldn't that be great?)

Yes! Avi said that she would either, Post the sources, Update to 1.10 or both! That is if she can find the old sources and a bit of time to work on it.
That said, we can't rely on her to do everything. If anyone has coding skills and wants to help with this, please contact me and join the team.
Any updates on the remake? I can help with the remake aswell.
Awesome! I'll try to shoot you a PM with my skype, you may have to since I'm so new here but I'll try.
Quote from Lil_Avii
[4:52:14 PM] Avii: I've since graduated and gotten a job in software development. this mod is actually what got me into the field, so it'd be nice to get back to it eventually.
[4:53:17 PM] Avii: tell ye what, and this is no promise, but I'll try looking for the harddrive. If I can find it, I'll either throw up the source code or update the mod to 1.10 or both, when I have the time.
[4:54:50 PM] Avii: If I can't find it, I will restart the project with your team, but due to work and other obligations in might be slowgoing.
The "harddrive" would be from her old laptop that she originally made the mod on. It has since died and the HD went into storage I assume.
Woah hey yeah, got a few members in the Skype but avi has pretty much opted to remake the mod on her own. (She mentioned that her code on the original was horrible, probably embarrassed about it XD)
She has dubbed this version "Simply Better Horses" A basic horse model is done with some rough textures for testing as well as a good portion of horse AI done. I'll see if I can't dig up the progress list. I'll also see if I can't get a current alpha and make a progress update video.
Couldn't get that alpha, she says it is too early to start promoting it, even for an alpha release. I'm guessing it will be 3-5 months till we are going to see a release. As you can see from the roadmap, we still have a long way to go and that isn't even an all inclusive list.
Why am I not getting notifications for this thread?
Hum, anyway a2937, I'll send you a PM with my Skype. Currently Avi is kinda keeping the remake closed source till it is ready, but we are always looking for new team members. More experience in one place the better!

It makes me sad to know that the original quit and Mojang possibly made her.
I just wish she would come back!
