This mod is inspired by mods like forestry and mariculture, involving a complex breeding system to obtain a way to farm resources, but it goes a step and a half further, allowing you also to turn bred creatures into pets that assist you in battle and in other ways such as expanding inventory space and providing buffs. The creatures are essence beings. Rifts in the fabric of space and time often leak creatures that exist in a purely energy form. Beings of untold magical ability, they are called Etherlings, and if properly tamed, can fundamentally change a person's experience in the blocky realm of Minecraft.
The Etherlings spawn from special rifts in common minecraft blocks. Everything from a log of a tree, to diamond ore, the rifts exist as glowing nodes within the block's core. From the rifts, from time to time, etherlings pass into the physical realm for brief moments. Some of the Etherlings are instinct driven, like insects, but some of the Etherlings that pass through the rift are of much higher intelligence.
Trapping
The lesser Etherlings that come through the rifts are easily baited into special traps. Using special incense and a proper containment device, common Etherlings can be preserved in the physical realm to be transported around and put to various uses. There are several types of traps, ranging from single block traps to catch tiny Etherlings, to multiblock structures to catch truly monstrous Etherlings.
Hunting
While Etherlings of lesser intelligence can be easily baited into traps, transcendent Etherlings require cunning and ingenuity. transcendent Etherlings are curious creatures, and will often flock to living animals and even players. They don't last long outside of rifts, but they can travel surprisingly far and fast. In order to catch these things, a hunter would need to devise a special trap to put up a temporary field capable of trapping Etherlings in small areas. Once trapped in a location, Etherlings can become quite agitated, and will attack anything in the field with them. A hunter must act fast. The trap won't last forever, but neither will a hunter against an angry Etherling. Using specially fabricated nets, the hunter can store these agitated Etherlings in shielded jars for various purposes.
Breeding
Once an Etherling is trapped, it can be placed into specially shielded environments where their energies can mix with those of other Etherlings. In this process, Etherlings share distinctive traits, sometimes fuse traits to gain more powerful versions of their abilities, or even evolve entirely new abilities. The "offspring" Etherlings don't last long in the physical realm without powerful shielding to protect them from the eroding effects of time, but if they are permitted to mature, they can be safely bred further. All Etherlings are negatively affected by the passage of time, and will eventually fade away, but in the meantime, they can be multiplied and evolved, leading to an unlimited supply of Etherlings.
Training
Etherlings of higher intelligence can be persuaded to use their time in the temporal realm to assist breeders that know their behaviours. Certain herbal incenses can easily persuade Etherlings to stick around and perform various tasks for their trainers. Some combat specific Etherlings can attack hostile mobs, summoning elemental attacks and even physically assaulting opponents. Other Etherlings, containing rifts into alternate dimensions, can act as portable enderchests, behaving like little wormholes that can suck up surrounding items. Others still can positively influence the very essence of their trainer, enhancing strength, initiating regen, bolstering defense, and many other wonderful traits.
All Etherlings are sadly temporary when they have been released into the temporal and physical realm. Special breeding can lead them to lasting much longer, or having much more potent affects, but even the most resilient Etherling must eventually answer to the eroding passage of time.
Items:
Incense
Incense is the key to luring whispy and lesser etherlings. Burning the right kind of plant matter can draw etherlings from a good distance, and is key to baiting small and large traps.
Nets
Nets used to trap and contain etherlings must be made of special threads. Soaking common spider's silk in copper grants them the abilities to contain temporal fields for the containment and transportation of etherlings.
Jars
Similarly to nets, glass jars can be treated with a special copper coating, enabling them to store etherlings for extended periods of time without exposing the contained etherlings to the damaging effects of time.
Copper Sealant
Copper sealant is the wonderful product that makes all interaction with etherlings possible. Unique traits to copper can inhibit and even stop the effects of time when configured in the right shape and consistancy.
Ether Essence
Etherlings and rifts often influence the temporal realm with deposits of raw elements... essences from which all things are made of. Researchers and dabblers alike theorize that intersection between the timeless Ether realm and our temporal one is what caused the creation of all matter as we know it. It seems that this essence manifests itself as time erodes timeless beings, and so some have come to call Ether Essence "Timerot".
Temporal Trap
Temporal traps are key to capturing more intelligent etherlings. Temporal traps are usually composed of ether essence encased in a copper detonation device. When set off, they create a spherical forcefield of sorts that causes time to fluctuate so rapidly as to disorient etherlings, making it easy to net them. Temporal traps often have a negative effect on the trapper as well, often causing intense hunger, nausea, and sometimes even blindness. As such, etherling hunters are strongly advised to use caution when detonation a temporal trap.
Rift Essence
Rift essence is the same as ether essence, though substantially more stable. Some of the most powerful temporal traps must be made using decent ammounts of rift essence, which can only be obtained by breaking rifts where they occur in the temporal realm.
Blocks:
Copper Ore
Copper is a common metal that exists all throughout the surface of the planet. As metals go, Copper is flimsy and not very useful, but when configured into the right forms, it's the key to all temporal manipulation.
Small Traps
Small etherling traps are delicate little contraptions made of copper infused parts. Usually, the trap is nothing more than a mesh box with a one-way opening at the top and some incense in the bottom.
Large Traps
Larger etherling traps can become quite monstrous, and are the only ways to catch grand etherlings. A large etherling trap is usually built around an existing rift and baited with potent incenses to lure out the lumbering giants that usually don't cross into the temporal realm. Some of these grand etherlings can be the size of small houses, so traps must be made accordingly.
Temporal Inhibition Chamber
In order to properly breed etherlings, there has to be a way to create and environment within temporal space that is conducive to their timeless needs. Temporal Inhibition chambers slow down the passage of time dramatically, and are usually large structures made of copper framework and special glass. Within these chambers, etherlings are easily coaxed into releasing ether essence, and also will multiply themselves if given enough time.
Temporal Gateway
Temporal gateways are modified versions of the barriers created by temporal traps. Temporal beings such as yourself can easily pass through them with only mild side effects (the occasional nausea), but timeless creatures like etherlings are utterly incapable of passing through them, as if they were impenetrable walls. Temporal gateways are crucial to maintaining larger Temporal Inhibition Chambers.
Entities:
Whispy Etherlings
Whispy etherlings are the smallest of etherlings. They barely count as etherlings as all. They cannot be bred, and in the real world, are scarcely more than puffs of smoke. Consider them more of the insects of the animal world. They can be useful in monitoring the behaviour that the lesser and mundane etherlings would exhibit. If your placed etherling trap is surrounded by swarms of whispy etherlings, you know you've set it right to draw in lesser and mundane etherlings.
Lesser Etherlings
Lesser Etherlings are the dabbling Ether breeder's entrance into the world of etherling taming. Lesser etherlings are easily baited with incense, and manifest themselves as spheres of light. They are often surrounded by swarms of whispy etherlings. Once trapped, they can be bred in temporal inhibition chambers and farmed for their essence. They live remarkably short lives outside of specially sealed environments, and don't withstand the passage of time well, so they make wretched companions, but for farming of essence, they are everything.
Mundane Etherlings
Mundane etherlings are choice companions to an experienced tamer. Being substantially larger than lesser etherlings, they end up taking up about as much space as a clenched fist. They produce much more essence than lesser etherlings, though markedly less pure. Their higher intelligence makes them wonderful pets, but they do not fall easily to ordinary mesh traps. To catch a mundane etherling, you would need a temporal trap and a special net not far different from a butterfly net. Mundane etherlings flock to signs of life. Animals that linger close to rifts long enough will inevitably be visited by these curious etherlings. Outside of time-sealed chambers, they live decently long lives, and can last as long as an hour if they're properly bred for it. Mundane etherlings also have the capacity to influence the temporal realm in very useful ways. In battle, they can be trained to strike their foes with heat or electricity, or even collide with them to inflict timewarp. While timewarp is not fatal, it's possibly the most useful skill for a battle etherling to know, as it can poison, blind, slow, and confuse its target.
Grand Etherlings
Grand Etherlings are the lumbering giants of the etherial realm. They scarcely ever pass into the temporal realm, but if baited with just the right materials, they can be persuaded to traverse rifts, and can be immeasurably useful to a master breeder. Being so huge, it's dangerous in the extreme to interact with these beings outside of a temporal field, and touching their forms inflicts a timewarp that is lethal, very similar to a hyper-fast paced version of wither. However, the essence they produce is tremendously valuable. It is these magnificent giants that are most commonly believed to be the sparks from which all life on the planet sprung from. It's rare that a breeder should ever have more than two grand etherlings in their possession at a time, as the space needed to accommodate them is astronomical.
Immature Tamed Etherlings
Freshly bred offspring of captive etherlings are highly unstable. If released into a temporally uninhibited environment, they disappate like a puff of smoke. Given time to mature in a temporal inhibition chamber, though, they can be ready for breeding and use in no time.
Crops:
Waitabit Bush
The waitabit bush is a naturally occurring plant found in plains and forests, and is a brambly bush that snags passing animals and people, holding them fast much like spiderwebs. They can be easily grown from seeds found in their branches, and are a great way to secure bait animals for trapping mundane etherlings. Other than their abilities to hold mobs fast, they're just weeds.
Creeping Rotweed
Creeping Rotweed is a foul plant indeed. It grows around the trunks of trees and dangles from branches much like vines do, but they give off a putrid odor that is nauseating to be around. The smell is not far different than rotting meat, and actually makes an excellent bait for grand etherlings. Be wary of this stuff. While it may only be an annoyance by itself, too much of the stuff growing wild is known to sometimes lure grand etherlings from nearby rifts, and that can be disastrous. If it's not growing in a controlled environment, this stuff is to be eliminated on sight!
Sugarmoss
Sugarmoss is like the complete opposite of rotweed. The scent that comes off of it is mouth-wateringly delicious, and when dried into an incense, it makes the perfect bait for lesser etherlings. It takes no effort to grow either. If you place a patch of the moss atop wooden logs, they spread quickly to nearby logs, forming a aromatic layer over every log it can reach. It occurs naturally on fallen logs from dead trees.

Recruitment:
If you have artistic or coding talents and want to make this a reality, message me on steam! I'm AZUREstrand there. We'll get sorted out what you can do!
What we need:
Sound Artist,
Coder
What we have:
Texture Artist
Modeler
The Modeler would need to know how to make animatable rigs. Things that can move, basically.
The Sound Artist should be able to make a variety of ambient sounds from scratch. Anybody can go to a sound library and pilfer a few bits. I need somebody that can either record or synthesize completely original sounds, tailored to the needs of the mod.
Any and all help is much appreciated. But this mod is going to need a hardcore coder.
EDIT: I've worked out a model and texture for the small etherling trap, but my incompetence with minecraft coding makes me unable to present it. Would be much appreciated if someone could take the model data and textures and turn it into something I could take a screenshot of. Techne's preview doesn't do transparency well.

Is the etherling going to work like machines aswell? like some etherlings might multiply your ores, some act like furnace and so forth?
Not quite. They will be a supply of ores as well as other things similarly to how bees could eventually become supplies of ores in Forestry. I'm working on updating the thread to explain this better. Try to think of the etherlings entirely as living things, not machines.

I'm always open to hearing new ideas for the mod, though I can be quite picky when I get big ideas like this. I'd love to hear what else people would like to see!
Bump on account of me still being invested in this mod. I'd really like a coder with some enthusiasm to help out with developing this mod. I've had horrible luck with coders. All have wound up being too busy or else unmotivated. I have some understanding of forge modding, so if the foundation for the mod were laid with something of a skeletal framework for all the aspects placed, I could contribute, but I still need somebody who can make the core classes and has patience enough to annotate the heck out of their code so I can work alongside them.
Oh. And as a side note, I think it would be best to develop the mod for 1.8 instead of 1.7, on account of 1.8 being so awesome, and opening up a world of potential to vanilla minecraft.
Still no programmers interested in this grand project? Did I come late to the party? I still monitor this thread, and am really looking forward to a chance to work with someone on this.
I like the idea for this mod, and am currently working on a mod that would include a breeding mechanic, If you don't mind i would love to utilize some of the concepts your presented. This would only be a small part of my mod however, a section in a much greater plan.
I am reluctant to see my ideas stripped away from my original concept, but seeing as to how I've changed gears, I guess it wouldn't harm anything if you took some of the concepts. Just credit me for my ideas, and I'll be happy. No modders have been willing to take on this project, so I decided to abandon the modding community. Just don't use the word Etherling in your mod. I've taken that name and applied it to an indie game I'm now developing with a small team currently codenamed "Project Etherling" or #ProjectEtherling on twitter. The mod and the game are only slightly related, but only very very slightly. So you are free to the concepts, but Etherling is off limits. Just give credit to me.

This is a good idea, but when i think "pets" i think something more lovable.
If im right, etherlings are just little colorful things? Why not, like...an animal? Or a fantasy creature? It might make the mod more appealing.
i think iv seen you before didnt you say you could do textures you can help them

Yeah, i can model and do textures fairly well, but i think i'd have more fun with....well, real creatures/animals xD
