UPDATE! The maker of Project Zulu went ahead and added most of these requested mod ideas to his mod. you can check it out here! Project Zulu and the post about the addition of these features HERE.
The addition of the Keep Inventory on Death game rule really made a lot of people happy. However, the 100% and 0% losses difference is a bit to much of a spread for me. I would like 25%, 50%, 75% losses to be available as well.
Basically, I wish there was way more in the way of controlling difficulty through death.
Like splitting the keep inventory game rule into the following...
/gamerule keepInventory true (keep or lose just the 3x9 inventory items.) /gamerule keepHotbar true (keep or lose just the hotbar items.) /gamerule keepArmor true (Keep or lose just the armor you are wearing.) /gamerule keepXP true (Keep or lose your XP, or even a HalveXp option?)
This way you can set your difficulty how you want it. Sometimes I would like to have a survival game where I don't want to lose my hotbar items and armor, but still want to have some difficulty of losing my inventory items, so dying isn't just a "big whoop, I died." situation. but also isn't the "ARGH I LOST EVERYTHING!!!" situation. The items that are lost would still; drop to the ground for later reclamation.
I decided to make a mock up config file for use in such a mod, to give you a more in depth idea of what I mean. Its down below the other ideas section.
Other ideas...
/gamerule damageKept true , Keep armor, tools, weapons, but add damage to them upon death. default 'false'. as well as a command and config option for setting the percent of damage added.
/gamerule lifePenalty [0-19] Set how much less health you return to life with, so you can put 14 for re-spawning with 3 hearts. Zelda style. Default '0'.
/gamerule randomInvLoss [0-26] , /gamerule randomBarLoss [0-8] , /gamerule randomArmorLoss [0-3] , Lose X number of random items from your inventory, armor or hotbar. (all separate settings) So you tale the "lose some, but not all", even further. All default to '0'.
Config file with Item protect whitelist. Any item ID listed under this section in the config would never be dropped on death, so you can make "soul bound" or "protected" items, for story mod maps. Wouldn't want the player losing something important on death.
Some REALLY expanded ideas...
XP loss controls. In the config, there could be a section specifically for setting how much xp you lose based on your current level. There would be a list of numbers, and then hat levels loss percentages on that same line. So you can make loss more damaging or less damaging based on your level. (See example config file below for details.)
MOCK UP CONFIG FILE
##All of the following may be changed on the fly in game by an op or command block with the /gamerule [command here] function.##
#Default Base Settings , Sets these rules when game starts.#
keepInventory : true
keepHotbar : true
keepArmor : true
keepXP : true
#Kept Items Control . Change the effects on items you keep upon death.#
damageKeptInv : false
damageKeptBar : false
damageKeptArmor : false
damagePercent : 0
##Random Loss Control, change a number of items to drop as chosen at random from each section. Loss must be true in Base Settings above. If both Base and Random are set, then the random items will be lost, instead of the whole section.##
randomInvLoss : true ##Set if you want randomly chosen items to drop on death. If set to false and Base is set to true, all items will be dropped from inventory##
randomInvNum : 3 ##Set how many to randomly choose from this section.##
randomBarLoss : true
randomBarNum : 1
randomArmorLoss: true
randomArmorNum: 1
#Penalty Control, Change settings for life, hunger and effect penalties on death.
removeHunger : true ##Set if you keep your current hunger level on death when you re-spawn.##
lifePenalty : 0 ##Set the amount of health taken from the player on re-spawn. 2 = 1 heart.##
buffPenalty : true ##Set if buffs from potions are removed from the player if the re-spawn##
#XP Controls, Change the settings for XP amounts on a per level basis.##
xpDontDrop : true ##lost XP disappears, and is not dropped where it can be picked up again.##
xpLossByLevel : false ##Set if XP loss is altered by the current level of the player.##
##Level, For use with xpLossByLevel. Ignored if set to false.##
##Anything in this level range will lose this percent of XP. [LevelRange:Percent] ##
##This list can not be changed on the fly by commands. If any level is not detected as being listed here, the default 50% loss will be used for that level.##
Level {
0-5:0
6-15:10
16-30:20
31-100:30
101-999:40
}
##Item Whitelist, These items will not be removed from the players inventory on death.##
##Example [ItemID:MetaData] if no meta data is included, all items inside that ID will be counted.##
Whitelist {
5
100:3
21345:7
}
##Compatability , This is here for use with bag adding mods so items can be lost from carried bags as well. These rules will only run if this mod detects the following bag adding mods [modnameshere] , Bags themselves, when kept in the inventory, bar or armor slots may or may drop on their own based on the above settings, along with all contained items, unless added to the whitelist.##
KeepBagInv : true
randomBagLoss : false
randomBagNum : 3
I suggested some of these ideas to the maker of the Keep Inventory On Death Mod, but he doesn't seem to be active recently... and I added a bunch of ideas as well. So anyone up for the challenge of making such a mod? I think it would come in very useful for adventure map makers and normal players alike.

There was already a mod in 1.2.0 that was called ''Keep Inventory on Death'', so I suggest changing the name, checking if that mod was open source and re-edit it for newer versions.

If you read the very bottom of my OP, you will see I mentioned this. Also, "Keep Inventory on Death" is a vanilla game rule.... so, that's not the "name" of the Mod I'm asking for, but the actual function I'm asking for expansion.
That added the game rule we already have to keep the inventory on death. This is changing it and breaking it up into more options nothing like that old mod.
Also its not called "Keep Inventory on Death".

Hey, hows your current mod going? How close would you say you are to starting this mod?.

In any case, the guy above makes a good point, whatever you name it, make sure its not "Keep Inventory On Death," perhaps "Expanded Death Controls"
I ended up having someone else make this mod for me. Thanks tho!
These features were added to the Project Zulu mod.

I been looking for this kind of mod because I wanted to keep my inventory and at-least lose some xp on death. I wish someone could make a single mod for this.

As i stated in the bold text. Project Zulu adds this feature now. If you don't want the rest of the Project Zulu features you can turn them all off in the config.
