They're relatively high poly to maintain compatibility with the original textures, but that shouldn't be a problem with a proper LOD system. A loader for .obj or similar model formats in Minecraft would be useful, though...

I think people are misunderstanding here. This is a suggestion NOT a mod. The download file that was posted by Barracuda is files for the Blender animation program models.

We need 3D books! Hold a book in your hand, and you can see what I mean. How would Steve be able to open a book that is in 2D? When books are being held, they need to look like the books on the Enchantment Tables.
Is this a mod in development, or just an idea? If it's a mod, I really hope you finish soon because this is what I have been waiting for for a long time.
No, Minecraft only supports json models, obj aren't supported. Also the blocks have a rotation limit of 22.5°, so even if you would make it into a json file, you couldn't import it.
But I'm currently working on a resource pack for Minecraft that will probably have simple but 3D rails, and if I may, I will take inspiration from this picture.
