Well I'm getting sick of having to choose performance or fun...
my computer can play minecraft with optifine at about 20 fps.
But with forge I can play minecraft at 15 fps.
What would be awesome is if someone can help me design a optifine like mod for forge.
I'll be pming sp614x about the idea and if he would be willing to help.
Things you should know:
Optifine is compatible with Forge. Don't use ModLoader.
NEI allows you to see how you craft things and what things are used for, which is why it's more recommended than TMI.
Don't use Forge's 481 build, it doesn't load mods. Use 482 instead.
ModLoader and Forge are incompatible with each other now. You probably haven't heard the news, but Forge has it's own modloader, modloadermp, and so on now. I'd have to guess that you quit modding -- or quit playing -- Minecraft for quite some time now.

It's the basic Optifine, Hotwing. Just install it after Forge, Forge has some compatibility with it that it does. Do note some mods have funky rendering with Optifine, and in one case, Ars Magica, the effects from the mod can crash with Optifine.
