I've downloaded optifine for one of the old minecraft versions, and I recently downloaded the lastest version for the updated Minecraft. Does anybody know how to apply the new optifine files, so it works?
Firstly, locate your minecraft.jar file. It can be found at C:\Users\Your Username\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\bin\minecraft.jar.
Secondly, you will need a archiving software such as Winrar or 7zip to open your minecraft.jar.
Then, you delete the Meta-inf folder in your minecraft.jar. Optifine will not work if you do not do this step.
Lastly, you extract the files you downloaded for Optifine, and move the components into the minecraft.jar.
You should run minecraft once to check if you installed it correctly, and post a crash log if it crashes.
I did exactly these steps. The only problem is, I click on the minecraft.jar file in winrar, and it won't allow me to drag and drop the files in minecraft.jar

Make sure you dragged the files into the winrar window. Do have a picture of your problem?
I highlight all of the items in the downloaded optifine folder, and I drag and drop it in the minecraft.jar file, and I'm absolutely putting it in Winrar. When I drag it in, it gives me a error sign to where my cursor is.
I would suggest right-clicking on your optifine zip file and choose "open with" winrar. Basically, you should be dragging the files from one winrar window (like you have with the minecraft.jar) into another.
Based on the picture of the problem, it doesn't appear that all of the class files are present (optifine has a lot more files than 6, at least the non-light versions). Dragging from one winrar window (optifine) to your other (minecraft.jar) should do the trick
Not sure if i am allowed to respond in this forum? If not, I apologize

It finally works, thanks to both of you! Appreciate it!
