If you're trying to mod in minecraft, some C++ experience is very useful. I was pretty much a beginner at coding. Now, after I coded a couple of things in Visual Basic 2010, I'm getting the hang of java and what everything does. Just set up mcp and go find some vid on youtube about modding.
As an experienced coder, it is rather hard to determine how hard a mod is to make for starters. However, once you understand Java, such a mod is rather easy to make. I would recommend you to start looking at some of the tutorials in this section, and read them.
I highly recommend simo_415's tutorials. Just remember that before you can start coding, you need the Java SDK, Netbeans, and the Minecraft Coder Pack.
Make sure you read the readme for MCP. It's impossible to use the program without reading that. Also, make sure you have at least SOME understanding of programming. If you know Java, perfect. If you know C++, you can probably make do. If you haven't done any programming at all, work on your own for a while before trying to mod Minecraft.
Thanks, I've been wondering what decompiler I should use for Minecraft. I've got a background in Java, but haven't used it in the past few years.
To the OP: The only thing I can tell you simply reiterates what has already been stated here. Reading and practicing are the only ways to learn how to program. Just keep at it, and you'll have all of your ideas see reality!
Many think that programming can be done without even knowing ENGLISH!!!
That isnt true
programming is the result of logic, focus, and general knowledge.
All programming is done with typing, not seeing.
Dont be lazy.
If you want to be lazy, then you cant even make a HelloWorld.
i have some ideas for mods but i dont know how to make mods.... can someone please send a link to youtube or something that shows how to make a minecraft mod? i rate myself not knowing how to make mods.
yeah um could someone explain in English???
(im not very smart about making things only play them) :tongue.gif:
Hi like him I am looking to start modding but I am willing to take my time and what I would like to know is what java coding stuff I would need to know because I am looking for a book to read to help me learn. So could someone help me please. :biggrin.gif:
hey, just surfing the forum and saw your post, This sounds complicated, but i took a college class in programming at my high school and we used an intro to java object oriented programming. we used this book and it made sense to me so maybe it will help you out if it isnt too late. Here is a link to the book, its written by C. Thomas Wu. its kinda old, so maybe theres a newer version somewhere.
Ok... these are people who want to know programming, and many places don't offer it(like my school). It's not necessarily
lazy, it's just that we're beginners.

Creating mods for Minecraft is quite an art. You can't just download a program or two and make a mod in a week, it's like writing a webpage in html but 10 times harder and longer. You need to know computer language up to C++ for the most advanced mods. Like everyone else said the best way to learn how to make mods is by reading the tutorials, there is no easier way than reading. The reason why is when you make a mod it's made up of all computer language; which means you will have to read. Now if you are making a mod that adds something to the game that you physically see, you will not only need to learn these programming languages, but you will also have to learn how to use 3D graphics programs and know how to texture them. I suggest trying out Blender3D, it is very easy to learn and the UI is quite easy to get used to, there are a few things I think could be changed in it but other than that I love that program.
In all; in order to learn how to make a mod for minecraft is going to take at LEAST 3-6 months of hard work. Now depending on the mod you are creating and if you only want to create just the one mod, you could just learn simply what you need to know and not what is irrelevant to the programming of the mod you are making. Kinda' like a Cook going into class for advanced astro physics; useless... I am a beginner at creating mods and I will not be releasing any for quite some time. Reason one - they are still glitchy, and reason two - I want more to be useful with these mods but that also means making them comply with many other common mods people use. As I slowly add to these mods I will learn much much more and maybe one of these days you will be downloading some of mine =). But don't get your hopes up, I have quite an interesting imagination but I am still a full time student in Votech, I'm a Senior so I have alot of other stuff to do so mods comming from me will take alot more time than another modder.
I wish you luck with learning how to mod, I would like to be able to work with many other modders on some mods for best results once I have learned enough.
On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being quite easy and 1 being a completely alien world, How hard would it be to for a confident C# coder to grasp with Java and get a mod up and running?

oh, mod, huh? pretty easy if it is like a mod where there are extra blocks and items. to make that kind, go to your user, appdata, roaming, .minecraftt and then click on bin, then go to gui, then items. png, then, edit it with paint or whatever, copy and pasting the exsisting items, then editing the image. I'm not sure where the blocks are, though.
kinda funny, I came across this topic last night around 2 am and I got thinking it would be kind of cool to build my own mods, so i dl'ed the programs necessary to begin and got started, within an hour and a half I completed the programming of the MOD and tested it, IT WORKED, I suppose its not too hard to MOD i mean I only have basic programming skills using visual basics lol, never caught on to Java...well until now I suppose lol.
anyways to the dude who started this topic, Google is your friend for sure, I mean i didnt check the date of when you originally asked the question but if you havent figured it out yet, you will. like i said i had NO clue what i was doing and within an hour and 30 minutes I was done my first mod.
Thanks for the advice!
