This will be my attempt to use the .md3 file format to bring higher quality models to Minecraft. this mod is intended to only be client side and to begin with im focussing on the mobs but im very interested new block models (read: models, not types) that ill outline when i get to it.
So heres a WIP of a creeper character with a placeholder texture (taken from my reference drawing). Final textures will be @ 64x64 to coincide with my favourite Texpack, Misa 64x64 hd. There will also be normals at some point to work with the Shader mod, when this functionality is up and running ofcourse :wink.gif:
What I do need however is information on how others have gotten m3d working in Minecraft, as my only point of reference at the moment is a year old YouTube video Notch uploaded. thoughts?
Note: This mod will attempt to maintain the style and character of the current game models. Ill post some concepts up as i find time around work to do them.

Found some free time today and knocked this little guy out :biggrin.gif: Still no luck in getting them in-game though. Maybe next up ill make a ?
So after spending an inordinate amount of time digging up old info and scrawling through the source. I have learnt two things.
a. .md3 support was discontinued early february 2010, The code containing the md3 loader was online for approx. 5 days to paying customers who had access to the /indev builds Notch wwas releasing at the time. I also familiarised myself with the whole Dock fiasco.
I thought his 'eastern' influenced artstyle was cute. but it wasnt minecraft imho. Not gritty enough. I dont believe minecraft needs to be blocky at all to retain its art style - but the way development was in those times, it seems the blocks stayed cube and the models got more detail. which is a contrast that takes from the game world. Im hoping to update the blocks to higher details aswell (for the ones closer to the player ofcourse)
anyway back on topic. I need to find that build, and with Notchs 'dont redistribute' thats not going to happen. Had a long look at the Model renderer, Ive been thinking about a way to meet halfway..
which leads me to my second realisation.
b. I do not know java. I can interpret *sorta* what the code is doing, but I may need to help of a java coder. unless I take on the mammoth task to learn as I go. which I wouldnt be against.
If anyone has possible solutions to these problems feel free to contact me.
Until such a time as I can get my head around this, Ill keep doing what I know and try to get out some more models this week. Im thinking :wink.gif:

EDIT: oh and thanks for the support guys! trust me - you aint seen nothin yet!
I will honestly change the colour of my pants if that crept up on me ingame. Very nice model, people will be daring their companions to apply the mod. Would LOVE to see you do the ghast design "properly". Cubes just don't do it justice IMO. Both your creeper and pig look epic design.
@Nicko21 If I work it out no doubt ill be sharing it all on here :biggrin.gif:
Thanks for the support guys! any of you know java by any chance ?
I updated the last post with a screencap from the high-res model in mudbox. It will be fun finding a way to add that much detaikl to say, the pig - without messing too much with the original design. well see.
Zeus almighty, that ****ing creeper animation.
That is some nightmare fuel.
Nightmares getting 65 miles to the gallon with that creeper.
Horrifying.
(Also, the pig is a little cubic, but still cute.)
What's happened? When can we expect a new update? By the way, i'm absolutely LOVING the models so far, and i love reading everyone's posts too! :smile.gif:

you should do a slime its easy if you can do that much detail in a creeper already
