UPDATE: I have recently restarted this mod under the new name Battlecraft. It is essentially the same concept with a couple of new features. Check it out.
I didn't really realise people were still posting on this one
At the moment this is in the development stage so no download yet (sorry). But thought i would show people how i intend for this to work.
---------- Creating a Guard --------------
To create a you will need 3 things
- A guard spawn point
This is an item you place down where you want your guard to be spawed.
The recipe will probably be a sign with a bar of gold (to represent payment) But I am open to ideas.
(where represents a sign)
- A guard tunic
The purpose of this item is mainly so we can dye it to change the colour of the guard.
Also opens up some PvP on servers involving different coloured guards.
Recipe will be the same as any other torso armour, but with cloth, plus a dye of your required colour
:biggrin.gif:
where is cloth, and is the dye of your choice
- Any Weapon
Any sword or a Bow
Once you add your tunic and weapon to your spawn point (via a custom GUI) you will be prompted for which order you want to give your guard. After this a newly created guard carrying the weapon of your choice and dressed in the colour of your choice.
-------- Guard Orders ---------
Guards will have 4 potential orders
- Stand Guard
Guard will stand at the original spwan point and leave only to kill mobs in sight (returning after killing the mob)
- Follow Player
Continually follow player (until death of either guard or player) and attack mobs in sight
- Wander
Wander around (with a preference to walk on cobblestone wood or cloth) and attack mobs in sight
- Patrol (most difficult to implement)
Involve following little flags that the player may place (agin attack mobs in sight)
Flags will probably be created using the following recipe
[]
Where is dye is cloth and is a stick
--------- Optional Modes ---------
This part is mainly intended for server play, but I plan to implement a system where guards will attack players to wearing the coloured tunic that the guard is wearing. This was a suggestion by a friend and we thought that this could result in some pretty cool Realm vs Realm server battles. This will probably be one of the last things implemented though.
----------- Pictures ------------
1st Picture of a proposed guard.
I have changed the helmet slightly since this photo but this is essentially what I plan the guards to look like. Possibly add a shield to the left arm (if not bow armed)
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions, or even if it was a good idea at all?
Also as a side note, does anyone know how to (or even if it is possible) to differentiate between different coloured cloth after you have created an item for it? At the moment I have the proposed work around using the dye in the recipe, but I would prefer to be able to use the coloured cloth directly.

Yes it will work, because the block id of the items are the same just with different damages on them.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Its not hell until I make it that way And I'm about to make it that way

Yeah I had a look at the code and saw how it was implemented, what I was meaning (and probably failing at saying) was, is there any way to tell the difference between say

Man I wish someone would make a tutorial of how to make a custom mob.. :sad.gif: Could you?
I would be happy to pass on any modding knowledge (or even show my code when its done). This is actually my first dive into minecraft modding. Most of my knowledge has come from looking at current minecraft code. Just at the moment, my Mobs are quite un-interesting, they are essentially players with a different skin, who just stand in 1 place. Sure this will change soon, but they don't even spawn into the world the normal way.
If you want my opinion, if you want a new mob just give it a crack. If you hit a snag, I'm sure people will be more then happy to help you out. And tell you the truth, i have had more fun modding minecraft then I have had playing in lately.
God, i love you :tongue.gif: I've been waiting for this forever and it will work nicely on our faction based rp server because when everyone is offline our towns are basically unprotected.
Yeah i did think a server may use this for this very reason. Multilayer does present a few more problems (eg, allowing only 1 "team" to destroy patrol flags for their colour). But hopefully nothing I shouldn't be able to handle. I have had absolutely no multilayer experience though, maybe I should drop into your server (link?)
Also the suggestion about citizens is quite interesting also. I may start work on that after the guards are all finished. I may even be able to make a way that you must recruit citizens and turn them into guards.
Wow, all the positive reactions makes the hard work seem (more) worthwhile. I however have decided to have a bit more of a life over the last couple of days, so not much progress. I have had a few more ideas so keep an eye out.
@sfxworks yeah help would defiantly be appreciated. I'll PM you soon
Just a few things. Please try as hard as possible to ensure gaurds will return to the sign post if they get stuck for too long. Lookout for things that could make the player babysit. I'll test if ya want. I seem to make programs crash. Would be nice to turn it into a positive thing.
You planning on Gaurd Mode as the default state?
I had to disable explorer npcs in the builders mod because it made creepers explode constantly, ruining landscapes and buildings over time. How r u gonna approach that? Maybe be able to have gaurds attack with arrows only? Replenishing them would be realistic but then again how realistic is an archer who can't get his own arrows?
I think it would be cool if you could add hostile guards as well, for like, say, maybe a castle that has hostile guards surrounding it? So you can't use the main gate.
Sand is WAY better then a diamond sword. What's better than diamond? Nothing.
But sand is better than nothing, right? Diamond < Nothing < Sand. Thusly, sand is better than a diamond sword.
Do you long for soldiers to patrol your lands from the rouge creeper?
Have you built an epic castle but still missing a handful of guards to guard it?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions you need
