I've searched the forums for things like this already, and I've encountered mods that have custom recipes for converting gravel (in any amount) into flint quickly, but I think there would be a better alternative. What I propose is a "sieve" (or a sifter, strainer) that when you use it on a gravel block, it has a 100% chance of dropping flint (as if the player is sifting though the gravel to find the flint pieces). The sieve would have about the same durability as a fishing rod. So, not too long lasting. It would be crafted this way:
(sheep is "netting")
"Netting" would be constructed like this:
(spider is string)

I think this would be a more realistic and balanced way to convert gravel into flint.
And yeah I know this isn't the most exciting of threads, but it is about functionality, is it not?
Well, that true, but could you not just then, using your same kind of logic, get rid of the furnace and just replace all smelting with regular crafting recipes? Its boring and their no inherent cost.
But that can take way too long and is not even realistic. Lets see an analogy: If you were trying to find a needle in a haystack, would you dig the hay up over and over again until eventually you see the needle sticking out and pick it up? No, you would sift through it, picking pieces out and sorting until the needle was found. Its the same way with this.

i agree having a zombie farm and no flint to make arrows isn't good
Make a tall staircase and lay down large stacks of collected gravel from the top. Then go to the bottom and start mining. When it runs out, repeat the process. Honestly, it's probably still faster than smelting.
Okay ill try explaining this easyiest as possible seeing as im not on a computer
First open up he BlockGravel search 10 == (0) or something near the drop section then change 10 to 1 and youll get a flint every 1 block of gravel u destroy. Btw say bye to the useless gravel :smile.gif:
-sigh- guys its a GOOD idea, and I would really want to see notch make this a tool, it would give string much more of a use, it would be much faster than basically wasting shovels and it would BE FASTER and I think fair. So stop complaining about it just because you had to waist shovels to get 100percent flint. That's the point of this idea is to make it easier so people don't have to suffer the countless hours of wasting materials just to get a decent amount of flint, so don't be selfish or jerks about it.

If I was looking for a needle in a haystack I would give up immediately.
Damn, this is such a good idea. I can't believe it hasn't been bumped since March. I'll do the honors.
Just another idea for the sifter:
What if it had a different functionality altogether?
I say that it shouldn't be like the furnace or the crafting table, rather like a 'dropped item' converter. It should still be crafted with the sticks and string like before, only instead of putting your gravel into an item menu or whacking gravel with an oddly shaped tool, you place the item on the ground and toss your gravel into it from above by placing the block on top of it. Then, out pops your flint!
Of course, it would have to be rebalanced, and doesn't sound very easy to create.
OR (I hate this idea, but it's easier)
It can be exactly like the furnace, only the fuel has to be string (as it would break after repeated usage), and as of the moment it would only have one possible input and output.

This.
Put it down, Break it, if it doesn't give you flint then try again because you get a block again.

But yeah this would give another use of string and is kinda expensive to craft so it balances out. Good idea!
