So, with the addition of the Halloween update we were given a useless head/decor item; The Pumpkin.
But now a few people are figuring out how to edit the visor from the claustrophobia inducing eye holes and mouth to low-light vision.
Personally, I turned the odd orange pumpkin into a shiny ODST helmet with a blue tinted visor, with possible plans to add a scale below the crosshair to aid in long-range arrow aiming.
What did you all do?
How to Do:
To edit the pumpkin visor, I opened up winrar. (I use Microsoft. Make sure that hidden files are shown. This option can be toggled in the Folder Option section of the Windows Control Panel)
From Winrar, go to Computer. Go to the main hardrive, Users, the user account you are on, and then into appdata. The files for Minecraft (.minecraft) are found in the Roaming folder of the Appdata.
Then you go into the bin, and use Winrar to open up the Jar file "Minecraft.jar" Example: C:\Users\Clayton\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\bin
The pumpkin vision file is found in the folder named "Misc", and is the PNG File named "pumpkinblur".
You can open the pumpkinblur.png file using image editing programs such as Paint.net and erase the whole visor, then draw what you want instead. Unlike other files, the visor CAN be made up of semi-transparent colors.
After you're finished, save it to a desired folder, then drag it into the "Misc" folder in the Minecraft.jar folder. Close Winrar, open up minecraft and put on a pumpkin, then voila; The visor you want.
My apologies if the above explanation makes no sense. I did my best to get it down.
just an idea i had i guess i can put it in here instead of making a new thread and maybe it will be picked up or have a following!
but i think it would be neat to implement this into all the various helmets you wear so that way it would still be sort of realistic hindering some of your fov and people could customize the blur image according to the way the helmets are in the texture pack of there choice... i just think it would be neat to do because some games when a helmet is worn has mods to show the helmet on the screen to make it more realistic.

I cannot code whatsoever, so maybe some passerby *HintHint* will take a look at this and mod it so that all helmets do. Or you/somebody could tweet Notch and see if he has any interest in doing so. I think that would be a good idea, personally, but I have a feeling some people might not like having anything obstructing their screen in any way. Maybe it would be a toggle-able feature, like in some RPGs where you can show whether or not to show the helmet.
i just wish that the helmets weren't pumpkins, if you were to change it then you would just see random helmets on the ground o.o
As of yet we are unable to do anything quite as lively, but you can make something that /looks/ like that with some designs...
In response to changing the actual pumpkin look, you don't change it like armor. You go into the Terrain.png file and edit the plain pumpkin blocks. The file is, of course, found in the Minecraft.jar file.
And yes, the VISR was one of the most awesome things I ever used. A shame you can't outline creepers and skeletons in red and items in blue XD
Nonetheless, I could see alot of clever uses for this. Anything from bangs, to a personal HUD, to low light vision, or like you said, weapon ranging scales.
yeah i know HOW to change the pumpkin blocks, but in doing so you change what the "wild" pumpkins look like. meaning if you change the pumpkin to look like a helmet or something, you will end up with "helmets" in the wild

Actually, couldn't we go into the animal/monster skins and outline them with neon colours? lol, like all the baddies in a bright, bright red, the livestock in green, Pigmen in Yellow... Haha
I think I might want to try and find a download for that Minimap. Outline that and make it look built it, then outline the item bar in the bottom of the screen, make the weapon scale, go over with a gradient low-light vision, add bangs in the very top... Oh, the possibilities. :biggrin.gif:
yeah it would be totally awesome if you were able to have a hud overlay with some special helmet that outlines various things whether it be mobs and or ore veins...
like have a mob vision helmet and then the helmet of the ores haha or something i am not in a good creative mind state right now but that would be neat!

Again, the available alternative is manually outlining all of the items whichever color works for you if you're going for that Halo: ODST Visor effect...
This is awesome.
I haven't even seen a pumpkin in my game yet.
But this is beyond epic!
Im 90% sure you have to make a new World to find pumpkins, when I discovered this, I discovered the power of INVedit.

Is shooting bullets just not cool enough for you? Get a Maliwan and light some people on fire!
I edited the first post with an explanation for Microsoft users. Hope it helps.

I found pumpkins in my pre-halloween world. You just have to explore new areas so the mapgen has to make new chunks.
