Let the block determine if it was placed on a valid tree (!not just wood!) and have it spawn either liquid Blocks or fill up an internal Tank (for pipes).
Forge 1.9 works slightly differently. I haven't made fluids at all, really, but Forge added a "universal bucket" so I'm sure they changed other things as well.

The universal bucket already exists in 1.8.9, but the tutorial still works, though.
