Use Railcraft with Traincraft. Signal controller+signal reciever+Locomotive detector very helpfull. Sometimes i use Signal capacitor box for long trains. With this signal system you may switch to any route from house.

Ramps are mostly from an intentional latency in positioning updating, a few other visual glitches happen with this too. The process of calculating the train's position, speed, movement vector, etc, are still rather hefty, it's a lot worse in 1.7.10 because of some things forge changed.
This will likely be dealt with through a rewrite because it will require massive amounts of the code to be reworked.
As for more switches, any redstone expansion mod will do wonders for them, wireless redstone and ProjectRed are good examples aside from the railcraft stuff.
You disabled the railcraft recipes for the vanilla stuff. this means that railcraft doen't load some items and traincraft crashs while trying to do something with these items. activate it and it should work

I haven't read the whole thread, but thought I'd mention the only very minor issue I ran into was some collision detection problems when I was trying to attach the cars. Otherwise, this is an amazing mod. Keep up the good work.

as long as you keep the vanilla recipe replacer on, it works fine.
