Simple Refinement is just that: a simple way to process your iron and gold into refined versions. To do so, simply run your ingots through a furnace again. You'll now notice the "Refined" tag on them, and anything you craft using all refined ingots will now also have this tag.
This mod adds no new items into the game. Iron is iron, gold is gold, no matter how refined it is. You can still mix and match refined ingots with regular ones in your crafting without issue.
Anything that you craft using all refined ingots also becomes refined. In the case of any tool, weapon, or armor, they gain a 50% bonus to durability. This may seem like a lot, but diamond is still more durable than refined iron, and refined gold will still be relatively poor. Refinement is not an enchantment, so you can still enchant your tools as well.
Modpacks:
You don't need to ask permission to include this mod in a modpack. However, I do prefer that you include a list of mods somewhere on your site/page/thread with a link back to this forum thread, in case someone wants to report a bug. And while it's not necessary, I would appreciate you letting me know that you're putting it in your pack, and maybe a little about your pack if it's themed in some particular way. That way if someone asks for pack suggestions to try any of my mods, I'll know some to tell them!
Redistribution:
If you want to list my mod on other websites then you're free to do so as long as you use my download links, since I very much enjoy being able to see download statistics. I would ask as a courtesy that you use the Adf.ly link by default. Preferably include a link to this forum thread as well, so that people can not only report bugs, but find new versions. If you include donation links, then there's one below. If for some reason you can't use my download links in your situation, then you must obtain permission, which I'll probably grant if you have a reasonable excuse.
You do not have my permission to re-host any of my mods in a way that you collect ad revenue for yourself from the download. I'm specifically putting this here because I know there are some sites which are doing it. Mod makers don't spend hours coding for you to profit off of them for doing nothing.
There are far better/bigger mods which are likely more deserving of your dollars, but if you've particularly enjoyed any of my mods and wish to contribute any amount, or are looking for a donation URL for a download or modpack site, then I certainly appreciate the gesture.
Simple yes... but that iron smelt has been done so many times before.
It's true. I have an actual refinement process in mind, which is where the idea originally came from (and don't worry, it doesn't involve more ore-doubling). Though believe it or not, this is a coremod, due to what's involved in handling recipes of this fashion. I didn't initially anticipate the need to go that far. I don't think anyone has ever attempted a "refined iron" that's still actually iron. For the time being, I wanted a way to actually create the ingots in-game, so I added a smelting recipe, so that folks can still take advantage of ingot refining in 1.8 and help find any issues with this technique in the process.
Balance-wise, you're still spending coal and iron, it's pretty much on par with any mod that creates steel tools or something. Though I may still tweak the bonus durability, since the ratio of quality for items and armor is a bit different.
I have no idea what version of Minecraft that the community plans to stick with, based on what I'm hearing. I'm already maintaining two mods across the 1.7.10 -> 1.8 gap, so I know what kind of rendering differences we're dealing with. I'll decide which to focus on, and which to port changes to, based on peoples' interest.

This is a coremod...what? Can't you add a new IRecipe instead?

No, the refined ingots aren't new items, they're still regular iron ingots with NBT info. The crafting system isn't designed to account for anything like that. Even if I had added a new ingot item and put it into the ore dictionary as iron, crafting would have still found the default iron recipes first.
Basically I wanted refined iron to still be usable as iron, but give anything you fully craft with it the refined tag. You can literally craft refined iron doors, refined iron bars, refined compass, etc. This opens up a lot of possibilities for the future of the mod. But for now, it only gives you a benefit for weapons and armor.

It would still be a better idea to add a new item and avoid core edits even if you have to add crafting recipes for the new item to mix with old item's recipes...

Not possible. If refined iron and vanilla iron are to be interchangeable, then the crafting system has to be able to distinguish them, and to detect when the recipe has all ingots of the refined type, and if not, default to the regular output.
There aren't actually any new recipes added. It's simply refining the ones you would normally get, if applicable.
I'm interested to see what becomes of this mod - you always have intuitive spins on game mechanics that feel like they should be part of Vanilla itself. Nice work!
Good stuff. Minor bug: refined shears and flint & steel don't get the durability boost. I could understand if the flint one is intentional, but it would be really nice to have the improved shears.
Per your license terms, I'm adding this to my 1.8 Extreme Pack located at my website on http://www.kreezcraft.com; the goal of my modpack is to provide as many 1.8 mods that work together as possible, to update the pack as soon as any mod updates and to eventually be one of the larger modpacks for the 1.8 cycle. Also, we are an Anarchy server, no bukkit. Pure forge.
I really like the spirit of this mod. It overlays nicely with vanilla and removes the hassel of item ID conflicts or need for the ore dictionary. A question about implementing it though. Can this be run just serverside, or do clients need to install the mod with forge as well? I'm trying to run a server with some mechanic changes through mods, but allow players to connect with pure vanilla clients.
