This thread is a testament to the authors. So many questions and so, so many answers. :-)
I just wanted to share my experience.
I play vanilla but exploring is hard for me to get excited for. My world is old and there are paths to all builds so exploring is a bit pointless. So, I decided to install a map to "enhance" my ability to explore.
I downloaded and installed per instructions. (the folder where the mod file goes does not create itself until you run the launcher with the custom profile at least once.)
Anyway, it installed flawlessly and worked first time.
Usage was intuitive and I was able to figure out all the things I needed. I adjusted it to fit my needs and then went on a huge walkabout to start populating waypoints! Woo Hoo, exploring is fun again!
I just wanted to say thanks. This looks great and will seriously enhance my Minecraft game.
i cant find out how to change it to old north and (less importantly) how to make the minimap square. is there a settings somehwere?? All i can find is 'options' which has very very few actual options D:

Press M to open the world map, then press options. It's there.
Minimap that also has a scrollable, zoomable world map (access with hotkey 'm'). Click and drag with the mouse, mousewheel to zoom. Right click to manage waypoints and stuff. View the entire single player world, or anywhere you have already visited in a multiplayer world (might be a bit funky with multiverse servers).
install Liteloader. Follow the instructions in its thread.
put the voxelmap .litemod file in your minecraft /mods folder
launch Minecraft with the liteloader profile
Supported languages shown in green on the map image (or red, if that language is a bit out of date). Feel free to submit new (or updated) .lang files here

old north setting remembered per world, defaults to off (for all those old pre-beta worlds before notch changed the direction of the sun. Set it once for them and it will be remembered)
partial fix for switching into cavemode when riding a minecart on a slope (1.8). You can sometimes see the sky dim near the horizon when you are riding a cart. This is because Minecraft thinks you are underground; it's a Minecraft bug
greatly reduce the chance of a ConcurrentModificationError when encountering a resource pack that has a badly formed .mcmeta file for a texture, ie successfully fail and don't keep trying (1.8)
fix so worldmap is able to determine correct multiworld when first re-joining a server (1.7)
1.5.9
improved multiworld support. VoxelMap now automatically recognizes previously visited (and labeled) worlds, as long as they haven't changed too much. If the user has stated that a server is multiworld, and a world is not recognized (either the first visit, or it has changed a lot) a message in chat will state that it is an unknown world, and remind the player to manually select the world in the multiworld screen
1.5.8
manually select which world you are in on multiworld servers that don't communicate with the client via world_info/journeymapServer/voxelPlayer plugins. Credit to cubic72 for the selection screen
configurable zoom levels. zoom out 4 times as far as before, if your memory can handle it
configurable in memory region cache size. again, if memory can handle it, increasing the size of the cache makes regions less likely to unload (to reload later) as you pan around
now cache map data on disk for singleplayer worlds too instead of creating from scratch every time from the anvil files (mostly because loading from the voxelmap disk cache is twice as fast)
fix for crash when opening the worldmap with coloredLights mod installed
1.5.7
performance improvement: empty regions do not count towards the region pool size. Loading an empty region will never cause a non-empty region to unload (saving having to possibly re-load it later). Empty regions also use no memory now
teleport in Nether works much better. Tp will go to the surface the world map knows about. If no surface at that X/Z, will check above and below to find one (everywhere for SP, loaded chunks for MP). If none found, TP not allowed so you don't end up inside a wall
player icons reflect whether the player has his hat layer turned off
waypoint icons in icon selector sorted alphabetically
1.5.6
loaded regions use much less memory, which means, for the same usage, you can now
zoom out twice as far on the world map
world map loads much faster. If you scroll faster than it can load, it skips to your current location instead of making you wait for everything to catch up. Regions that have gone off the screen before they could render because you scrolled so fast are now removed from the queue
keyboard controls for the world map. up/right/left/down to pan, crouch/jump to zoom in/out. hold sprint key to pan faster
bugfix for zombie villager and spider jockey helmets rendering too large
1.5.5
add support for CustomNPCs mod
player icon on worldmap now works when radar is turned off
small scale skull icon fixed
keep openGL stack consistent when attempt to automatically create an icon for an unknown mob type fails
1.5.4
add support for Colored Lights mod
custom mob icons can be created with a text .properties file, allowing them to use the current resource pack (and saving space over .png custom icons)
fix for teleport to waypoint sometimes trying to teleport to the coordinates of a waypoint in a different dimension
1.5.3
fixes for compatibility with shaders mod (roundmap stenciling, blurred text on worldmap UI)
more consistent getting the name from multiverse servers with the requisite plugins
1.5.2
zooming in world map much more consistent with low framerates
handle resource packs included with saves
handle launchers that connect the client directly to a server
handle resource pack waypoint icons with different sizes
waypoints created with a now missing image will show as the default instead of not at all
1.5.1
lot of CTM and custom color map fixes, which improve support for some complex resource packs that rely on MCPatcher or Optifine
1.5.0:
configurable waypoint icons. Add your own! Either put in the .litemod file with the rest, or create a resource pack with new icons like /assets/voxelmap/images/waypoints/waypointNAME.png
Internally, using sprite sheets now instead of individual small images. The speed boost is actually rather minimal but it is there, particularly on busy servers with a ton of players and their names being rendered.
Dude chill out, have you heard of time zones. If you're having trouble installing liteloader then head over to the liteloader thread, post what steps you are trying an why you're finding it's not working. A screenshot of a message isn't very helpful because it doesn't tell whether you're using forge, or optifine or anything else. You need to also mention what profile you are choosing in the launcher and also make sure whether you're installing the correct version (eg. 1.10, 1.10.2, 1.9.4, or whatever) because with liteloader mods all the versions must match exactly.
Anwyay, post your details here or in my thread and we can help you out.
HWY, apologies. I haven't really been here lately. The Liteloader thread is the best place for help with installing it, but if you are still having problems I'll try to help you out. Appreciate the donation BTW, not a lot of people do that

sure it is. On Liteloader's download page, notice "For all development builds access the Jenkins server here." Click that to get 1.11, it's here: http://jenkins.liteloader.com

I know you likely don't do bug reports for 1.7.10, but for some reason on one particular instance of Minecraft, VoxelMap refuses to show or work. No crashes, seemingly no errors referring to it in the console except for this:
[14:57:08] [Client thread/INFO]: [com.thevoxelbox.voxelmap.k:<init>:-1]: could not get entityRenderMap
Any idea what is going on? Doesn't happen with any other instance. It seems to only happen with Coastercraft, and I have notified the dev, but no response yet.
that's not a fatal error. If it can't get the entity render map on init, it tries again until it does. And if it never does, all that would happen is the in-game waypoints wouldn't show. Looking closer: also lighting would never load. That would mean the minimap was black (unless you turn lighting off in the map's performance/features submenu) or crash it. You'll need to be more specific than "refuses to show or work". Does the game crash? It runs, but no hint of map? The map is there but all black? In the liteloader menu does it show as loaded?

You sir, are my hero. Doing gods work here!
Thanks!
Update: Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
I downloaded the LiteloaderEXE from the link above called:
The curseforge download section for Voxelmap is not currently showing the 1.11 version of voxelmap. I did redownload the 1.10 and 1.10.2 versions to make sure it wasnt one of those and I was just misreading the labels. Neither of those download version have the "for 1.11" tag. Am I looking in the wrong place?

Also:
new page sniped D:
1.11 released! get at the usual place: https://minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/voxelmap/files
tell me if anything is broken. All files in resource packs need to be lowercase now. I think I caught everything
Is there any way to make this work for 1.11?
Liteloader is not updated and I have no clue how to do this, or if it is even possible.

Update: Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
I downloaded the LiteloaderEXE from the link above called:
"liteloader-installer-1.11-00-SNAPSHOT.exe"
I ran the installer even though Windows tried to stop me. FORGET YOU Windows!
I then launched Minecraft (default launcher) and selected the new profile created for me by Liteloader.
This caused a new folder to be created in my MODS folder in my Minecraft Directory called 1.11
I placed the Voxel Map file "mod_voxelMap_1.6.15_for_1.11.0.litemod" into this folder and then launched Minecraft again.
Done. Waypoints were still there. All was great!
(excuse the step-by-step above. It's what I do)
Again, Thanks a ton!
Can the radar option be disabled server side?
yes.
https://dev.bukkit.org/bukkit-plugins/clientpermissions/ is the easiest way
new version 1.6.16 (for MC 1.11 only ATM)
fix shulker icon
fix vex icon
fix for possible corruption around the edges of icons when switching texture packs
players wearing other players skulls now show the other player's face on the minimap (instead of steve)
slightly better handling of multiworld recognition for skyworlds

The curseforge download section for Voxelmap is not currently showing the 1.11 version of voxelmap. I did redownload the 1.10 and 1.10.2 versions to make sure it wasnt one of those and I was just misreading the labels. Neither of those download version have the "for 1.11" tag.
