To put it simply. I REALLY appreciate that, with Thaumcraft, I can stop "worrying" about having to repair my items constantly, the escalating costs of doing so. and Eventually replacing them.
I do have to control my behavior a bit: don't let too much damage build up. But - if/when I do - I *have* to keep the tool on my taskbar in order to repair. So this 1 point per minute thing would be seriously annoying.
As it is, I have grown inordinately fond of my items and its a major loss if I loose them to lava or something. And Repair has enabled that.
Conversely, the durability of thaumium items without repair just seems too damned low. I don't build mob grinders, so my Thaumcraft "early" game is basically watching the durability disappear like snow on a volcano on all my items. I hate cutting down greatwoods unless they are super common, and I am sometimes (literally) miles from a nether fortress (or a desert) when I pop through and take a look - meaning praecantatio comes from sand, and thaumium is therefore super messy and a pita to get. And I hate having to trek miles every 30 minutes to get enough sand to make enough thaumium to repair my tools that keep breaking.
Of course, netherwart, when obtained makes thaumium cheap. But for the most part I try to rush through to the infusion matrix and infusion enchantment as fast as bloody possible to free myself from this unpleasant aspect of the early game.
yeah, it really takes a while to get there. i woudlnt mind having no repair on basic thaumium tools. just increase the durability a little bit to the durability of steel tools from railcraft, and they will be worth making, and still just be a little better than iron, with better enchantability, without being better than diamond.
but the high tier tools, pick of the core, axe of the stream etc. should keep the ability to be enchanted with repair 2 exactly like it is, without nerfing the repair value.
how expensive the enchantment would be, or how to get to it, is another story.

Personally I find the biggest problem with repair is when it's on an elemental tool. Your getting an amazing quality tool with a useful secondary power and on top of that, with repair II you never have to worry about it breaking.

thats the point of those tools. i went through a lot of hazzle crafting them and building them up with enchantments. more so than mining a few diamonds. they better be good.
and never having to worry about it breaking isnt true either. on a lengthy mining trip it does take a lot of damage, and needs time to repair.
the sword not so much, simply because swords generally dont take as much damage, unless youre in front of a mob grinder. but the axe and the pick do. and an arcane bore chews through a pick fast.

Then use unenchanted tools or lower level enchantments.
Honestly, I'm getting pretty tired of this whole repair debate now. I'm likely not going to reply. Even Azanor feels like they're too powerful so expect some kind of nerf in the future. I just hope he adds some kind of config option to make both groups happy.

Hi,
While I was updating my mod pack on the testing server, I added Thaumcraft 4, Thaumic Tinkerer and Electric Tools. It then threw this crash when starting up the server: http://pastebin.com/9k5eHa5z
At first, I thought it was the addons, so I removed them but it still spat out the same error. I then looked up on the OP and found out that a mod has an outdated version of the API. I looked at the bottom of the error for any mod names, but all I could find was Thaumcraft related errors. I can't really be stuffed going through every mod to find out which one is outdated.
I guess, the problem here is, some players view it as a problem when high quality tools "escape" the upkeep cycle.
Others (myself) see it as an "end game" benefit of investing in the mid-game. i.e. when I have built my infusion altar - I do not see it as unbalancing, but rather *expect* tools that will last me forever from that point on.
Having invested that much in my tools, I even want a mod that reliably preserves my tools if I fall into lava while AFK or get blown the %#*& up. TT hasn't re-introduced its ... sigil from TC3 which had that effect :/ - Twilight Forests charms are what I have to farm as even the various gravestone mods' gravestones get blown up by the Wither or sufficient dynamite if one accidentally triggers the wrong trap (in, say, roguelike dungeons. Not that I did that. *coff*).
Let me tell you a short story, in the past, Steve was a bit clumsy, and didn't know how to hold a bow properly, and it took him 1.8 years (that means update 1.8 offcourse) to learn how to hold it.
Now Azanor, learn Steve how to hold a bow of bones
Didn't know how to hold one? Back in my day we were so good with bows we'd fire 'em like machine guns!
Progress report: Mana bean farm now at 60 beans planted, considering holding it there. Mana bean production under a lamp of growth is steadily reaching an acceptable level. Once I have a steady supply of Salis Mundus, enchanting shall be mine to command. And I'll finally get my reed stave, that I may shock the ever-loving bejeebus out of my enemies.
I did some CraftTweaker scripts for Mystical Agriculture. They fill in a couple of small gaps in MA, and also let you make or duplicate not only vanilla plants, but the blocks, plants and wood from Quark and Biomes O'Plenty. Also spawn eggs for most vanilla mobs! The scripts are here on Github.
Hmm, I notice you mention twilight forest mobs in there - it could be that they have their own mechanics to add damage to items. If they do that when a piece of runic armor is on 0 charge it could cause it to break. You might want to enquire in the twilight forest forums post if that is the case. I've set the armor to not be breakable, but if another mod ignores that setting then there isn't much I can do.
I don't think it's Twilight forest, but considering what you said, it's most likely infernal mobs. That mod does add custom damage mechanics. Thanks!

My chest of once impossible research notes... plus extra thaum and a few tidbits.
However I am still sort of stuck on one thing.
I still have so few of some aspects and a lot of others, so anything that I need to use those few on I get stuck and start being forced to mix things. I have every aspect, and to give you an idea of how long I been at this.. I have ONE table, in front of books, to get all the aspects with a white star on em. That took around a week RL days to generate all that according to my game time.
Aside the deconstruction table that is rather slow, and mixing stuff, and going even further out into the world to find new nodes that my minimap is scattered with 100's of markers showing where many are and what type, above and below ground that have all been scanned. (need to start jaring a bunch @.x)
How do you get more? I've seen people boat that they have 100's of each aspect and never run out.
Lastly, I never really got into golems before (found their pathfinding a bit blag back in the days) but am trying to start with them again but am a bit confused. What upgrades would I give one to say sort out the aspects from the distill into jars, and do the jars have to be level with the ground the golems on or can it be a block above on a shelf?
i just want to make a note, that manabean farms became a little bit of a pain for single player worlds. because the game doesnt run overnight like on a server.
i guess ill just have to make it bigger.
is it possible to distinct between multiplayer and singleplayer worlds, so the growth speed can be increased for single player?
If I might make make a suggestion: Your thinking about the problem a little too plainly. I know a very simple way to fill four jars at once without using any of the newer fancy pipes: one jar per side of the alembic. Just have a pipe on all four faces connected to a jar, and they should all fill.
On terms of balance and being useless: Thet're not. If you get a little creative you can make more complex builds to fill your jars, but as it stands they are meant for small, simple systems.(Like fueling an infernal furnace)

Question not the mad-mans ways, for you may begin to see logic in his actions, then find yourself mad as well.
You may call me The Madman, as there is no name that suits me better.
I happen to make modded survival maps, if your interested see my latest: The Asylum
if thats a problem. i would say, there are 2 solutions to the problem. make it a config for people who want upkeep to disable it, or make the process of aquiring the enchantment more challenging, but interesting and fun like a boss fight, or something involving gambling with a pech. the reason, i dont like the idea of tools repaired from nodes or in a repair station or by drawing vis from nodes, is because youll never have one around when you want to repair your tool, because theyre generally too rare. plus, it wont work with the arcane bore.
My solution would be a config option to have Repair consume thaumium or cloth to repair equipment, perhaps one item per 1/4 total durability, like anvil repair sans the xp requirement and that horrible rising-cost mechanic.
Eh, greatwood cutting is okay as long as you're careful to get the saplings, especially once you get a spare sapling that you can plant within load radius of your house. Also, you don't have to use thaumium before you have a praecantatio source, you can just make one thaumium pick or something for special purposes and rely on iron otherwise. Once you have a centrifuge, your Praecantatio woes will end forever, since you can just make a thaumic slime farm and spin down all the Vitium you get from that.
A couple of pages ago someone reported of infusions costing more essentia than normal from the start. It's intended?
He may have been enchanting an already-enchanted item. The essentia costs from that rise by 10% times the total levels of any existing enchants besides the one you're working on.
You want a farm, you grab a hoe. You want a boat, you grab some wood. You want a fireplace, you grab A FLAMING HELL-BOULDER BECAUSE THAT'S HOW MINECRAFTERS ROLL!!!

Nope. I am wondering however if he was doing infusion enchantment and didn't have enough xp available.
Hmm, I did that once (in 4.05) -- IIRC, the cost display did go up, but it didn't actually pull any essentia. Has that behavior changed in 4.10?

What upgrades would I give one to say sort out the aspects from the distill into jars, and do the jars have to be level with the ground the golems on or can it be a block above on a shelf?
i guess ill just have to make it bigger.
is it possible to distinct between multiplayer and singleplayer worlds, so the growth speed can be increased for single player?
On terms of balance and being useless: Thet're not. If you get a little creative you can make more complex builds to fill your jars, but as it stands they are meant for small, simple systems.(Like fueling an infernal furnace)
You may call me The Madman, as there is no name that suits me better.
I happen to make modded survival maps, if your interested see my latest: The Asylum
My solution would be a config option to have Repair consume thaumium or cloth to repair equipment, perhaps one item per 1/4 total durability, like anvil repair sans the xp requirement and that horrible rising-cost mechanic.
He may have been enchanting an already-enchanted item. The essentia costs from that rise by 10% times the total levels of any existing enchants besides the one you're working on.
