I'm not saying something thats full automatic, but at least some way to run a few more at a time than just the one you're focusing on. And possibly decrease the amount one player can use at once based on the number of players in the game. I mean like only 3-4 by one player. It takes forever when playing single player skyblock.
I might end up making some things easier to get or making boosting how often sieves drop items across the board. I want to wait for ores to get added before I start tinkering with that because they are going to make it feel a lot more worthwhile to put time into the sieves.
Also, you showed putting lava in the barrel. While I can assume it was mostly for demonstration, it is a skyblock companion. Is there a way to get more lava in skyblock?
There will be. After the sieve functionality is mostly done I'm going to add a crucible that will let you melt cobblestone into lava, among other things. I've got a lot of barrel recipes planned that will require lava too.

It seems like barrels will be the piston of skyblock.
Iron and gold ore pieces added to sieves. You can also smash iron and gold ore with a hammer for a little extra profit.
Remember, it takes 4 ore pieces of the same type to make a block that you can smelt.
I intended to make each of the 3 extra forms of ore that I add compatible with IC2, but they aren't using the ore dictionary for iron and gold. Thermal expansion does use the ore dictionary for those two, but since TE hasn't updated yet that doesn't help much. I haven't tried with Tinkers' Construct, but all my ores should work in their smeltery.
EDIT: Just tried using my ores with Tinkers' Construct and they didn't work. I guess It has it's own API too. Le sigh.
I also think that you should change the barrels a bit but this is just my idea:
I think you should make it so certain items added to the compost should be More filling than others, for instance A Cactus is definitely bigger than an apple =P
also I think you should add a block of some sort that would automatically sift the items in the sieves for you, like a rumbler that, if you put under the sieve would "Shake" the sieve to sift through your stuff
EDIT: I also wanted to let you know im using this mod A LOT, and im not even playing skyblock XD Im just getting the update with the sieve ore stuff, although it sounds like you may be having problems with it.

Because I hope that this mod will eventually make it's way into mod packs like FTB and/or tekkit, I will probably never allow the sifting tables to be automated. The things that have a similar function in other mods are
1) Turtles from ComputerCraft, which take fuel and leave gaping holes in the world.
2) Quarries from BuildCraft, which take fuel and leave gaping holes in the world.
3) Laser Drills from MineFactory Reloaded, which take a TON of MJ power.
4, sort of) Recyclers/Mass Fabricators from IC2, which take a TON of EU power AND they consume stuff for scrap.
All of the above have a a steep cost associated with their use and they are relatively end game items. The sieves have no cost except for the time you have to spend processing with them, and they are very early game items. If I were to make it possible to automate them, then they could be filled with sand and gravel that you get from an automatic igneous extruder + pulverizer combo and it would become the single most overpowered automatic resource generator in modded minecraft. Also, you could run several of them in parallel to multiply their output. My mod would start getting banned from servers and the nether might just freeze over. =(

I see were you both are coming from, but in my mind you cant really get tekkit stuff on skyblock, Which is what this is supposed to be supporting, Plus I cant spend all my time sifting through stuff when I have Crops to grow, animals to take care of, and cobble to generate! and you could make it automated yet Veeerrry slow, I personally wouldn't mind how long I wait as long as im not spending all my time sifting through gravel for valuable resources, and I can manage my other things in the background
I also think that you should change the barrels a bit but this is just my idea:
I think you should make it so certain items added to the compost should be More filling than others, for instance A Cactus is definitely bigger than an apple =P
This is already the case. For example, it takes about 14 or so wheat to fill a barrel completely, while it only takes about 8 steak. Generally speaking, the more difficult it is to obtain an item, the more it will fill a barrel. While I was balancing everything I tried to take the size of an item into account too, but I admit it wasn't my first priority. There are almost 50 individual items that can be composted in barrels, so I'm sure I overlooked something.
EDIT: I also wanted to let you know im using this mod A LOT, and im not even playing skyblock XD Im just getting the update with the sieve ore stuff, although it sounds like you may be having problems with it.
I wouldn't call it problems really. I just expected that the new ores that I added would auto-magically be compatible with other mods like IC2's macerator, Tinkers' Construct's Smeltery, etc, because of the Forge OreDictionary. This didn't turn out like I anticipated, so I'll have to individually add support for each mod that I want my blocks to work with. Basically, everything is working like I intended, but Iron Ore Gravel from my mod won't work in a macerator. You can still cook it in a furnace and smash it with a hammer so it's totally functional.
also I think you should add a block of some sort that would automatically sift the items in the sieves for you, like a rumbler that, if you put under the sieve would "Shake" the sieve to sift through your stuff

This is a veeery fine line. On the one hand, It's just like you said, I really don't want to soak up people's time doing boring stuff. It might as well be automatic really, because you can just rubber-band your mouse down and let it do it's job while you watch something in another window.
One the other hand, I really don't want you to be able to walk away and come back to a pile of resources. I firmly believe that the closer Skyblock gets to Creative Mode, the less fun it becomes, and that is pretty close close to spawning in resources.
To address the lack of other mods in skyblock, I do plan to add support for modded ores in the future. At the very least tin, copper, lead, silver, and aluminum. If I add a few rubber tree seeds to the dirt sieve, this would unlock most of IC2, Forestry, MFR and Thermal Expansion (whenever it updates). I want to support the Thaumcraft shards and the XyCraft gems as well.
So using the sieves as a first step on the way to building a MFR laser drill will be totally possible in the near future.
It's a tough problem, and I don't have an amazing answer for it just yet.

I would definitely agree with the no afk automation thing- Its Skyblock for crying out loud, cobble genning (that's a word now) is unautomateable (unless you do the cheap mouse thing or install computercraft). However, the sieves are a significant amount of work for very low input...
I saw someone suggest a while back that you have it sift automatically when it's raining. This might be a good solution to your problem, as it doesn't rain terribly often (unless you're trying to record), and rain doesn't last very long (Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not too familiar with the vanilla weather mechanics). Maybe make it so it will sift during rain but a something like a quarter of the speed (maybe less). That seems like a reasonable way to avoid hours of grinding at a sieve while still keeping them relatively balanced.
Also, the new iron and gold ore stuff is awesome!
When you get around to adding mod items as drops from the sieve, don't forget certus quartz-Imagine having an AE system in sky block!!

I'll think on it. In the meantime, listening to your guys' point of view is really helping me out. I hope you'll keep the debate going!
Also, I uploaded a new build with a fairly important bugfix. Apparently the ore pieces that came out of the sieves weren't combining properly. The pieces you got from hammering world-spawned ore worked, but not the sieved ones. They're all working as intended now. Any broken, crushed or pulverized ore that you got from sieves before this update will have to be replaced. =(
It's too bad you were in creative mode when you used the sieve. It works much faster if you are in creative and it doesn't do the animation and particle effects justice.
I'm looking forward to watching this series play out. My next update should have some really fun stuff for you to play with. You'll be able to get mycelium, mushrooms and I'm adding a barrel recipe for slime. I might add in the stone barrel too if I don't get too excited first. =)
Also, you're right. The barrels do look like trash cans. =D
So wait, how do you combine the crushed ore into anything usable? I was just testing it, and I broke gold ore gravel, and it gave me 5 crushed gold ore.
What do I do with that and how can I get pulverized ore?
I'm working on Summerfields and Painterly texture pack compatibility with this mod. It'll be some time before they're presentably complete, though.
Awesome! If the overall colors of the compost don't look right with the retextured items, then you'll have to change the color value in the config to match. Some of the textures should automatically adapt too, like the infested leaves and the dirt/gravel/water inside of barrels and sieves.
So wait, how do you combine the crushed ore into anything usable? I was just testing it, and I broke gold ore gravel, and it gave me 5 crushed gold ore.
What do I do with that and how can I get pulverized ore?
Ok, new ore system 101.
The main thing to remember is that you can smelt blocks in a furnace, but not items.
If you smash an ore block with a hammer, you'll get items. Four of these ore items makes a new block.
Smashing any of the ore blocks with a hammer to make the material into finer pieces is usually profitable, but it's never a loss.
The fortune enchant can increase the profitability of smashing ore.
So...
Smashing a vanilla ore with a hammer OR sifting gravel will give you broken ore.
Combine 4 broken ore items to make an ore gravel block.
Either smelt the ore gravel OR smash it with a hammer to make crushed ore items. You can also get crushed ore from sifting sand.
Combine 4 crushed ore items to make an ore sand block.
Either smelt the ore sand OR smash it with a hammer to make pulverized ore items. You can also get pulverized ore from sifting dust.
Combine 4 pulverized ore items to make an ore dust block.
Smelt the ore dust, because you can't smash dust any more.
...

WOW!!
This mod is simply genius! It makes so many blocks renewable! I'm really impressed by the ideas. It might revolutionise Skyblock if enough people notice it. I've got an idea. What if you make saplings craftable by putting a leaf of the sapling you want to grow and a stick under? Also, could you make Endermen drop obsidian when they die? Finally, what about making lava renewable by getting lava when smelting obsidian?

Over the last couple of pages lots of people have given me lots of food for thought. I already have solutions on my TODO list for each of those resources. You'll be able to get seeds for each of the vanilla trees by sifting dirt, you'll be able to melt cobblestone in a crucible (that I haven't added yet) to make lava and then turn the lava into obsidian. I really do appreciate the feedback though. If you have any other ideas, I'd love to hear them!

Ok. I finally got around to updating the main post. Check the Hammers! section, near the bottom.
Really loving the mod Braha and it just keeps getting better. The lack of redstone dust and livestock animals on skymaps has always been a bummer. If you could think of some way, that made since, to give the player the ability to get animals we could make Farms.
New update. It's kind of a small one. I added stones and fixed a bug with the barrels.
The stones are leading up to the release of my custom skyblock map, which will be a chunk of dirt (no grass!) and a single tree. No chests. No other islands. Nothing else. It'll be the purest and most sadistic Minecraft survival map ever made. BWAHAHAHAHAhaha ha. -cough-...
Sorry about that. I got a little carried away with schadenfreude...
Anyway, all thats left to do before that is the crucible and the rest of the vanilla seeds. I'm almost there.
That being said, it'll probably be about a week or so until the next update, because I hope to get the crucible done (which requires more modelling, which takes a lot of work) and I have mid terms this coming week. =(
EDIT: Also, if I keep adding stuff to this mod, I'm going to need a wiki or something to keep all this information from becoming (more) of a jumbled mess.

It makes me really happy to hear that people are enjoying my work! I don't think it'll ever get old. Thank you for posting!
You can already get animals on Skyblock. You just have to make a patch of grassy dirt and wait. I've found it helps to put the grass about 20 to 30 blocks away from wherever you spend most of your time and just forget about it. After playing for a couple of hours you should have some animals. I don't want to make anything easier, just possible.

What? Really? lol I never have open grass in my sky world but that will change now...nice to learn new game mechanics that I did not know...Mahalo man.
Also any plans on making crooks from other materials?
Thanks! It's always great to hear that I'm on the right track.
