Advanced Darkness
Do you like horror games? Are you afraid of the dark? Vanilla minecraft's darkness does not create a dark enough world for you, even on the lowest brightness. You can see perfectly well even at midnight, making torches only for mob spawn defense.
This works well with the Gases mod, by Glenn.
Features
Decreased light levels. You can't see anything in dark caves, or at night. Try to set your spawn immediately!
Automatic gamma-changing.
How it works and recommended music.
At load, the gamma is set to -1.0. This is the exact opposite of Bright in normal minecraft, creating the darkness.
I recommend you listen to scary/eerie ambience when out during the night or in caves. Some recommendations include some by Kevin MacLeod in his Eerie genre. If you're using Advanced Darkness for a Let's Play, I highly recommend you edit that into the background.
Vanilla alternative
You don't need this mod to play with Advanced Darkness! You can run this in vanilla or modded Minecraft. In the "options.txt" file in the .minecraft folder, change "gamma:(value)" to "gamma:-1.0". This mod does it automatically.
1.5.1: Release for 1.6.4. Lack of time led to the community (specifically shady2k) doing this for me. Thanks!
1.5: Forge, and removal of all features besides gamma-setting.
1.4.2: Fixed internal source, edited light levels, included multiplayer, and stopped supporting Gases.
1.4.1: Fixed crafting bugs.
1.4: Gases!
1.3: Updated to 1.6.2. Made skeletons walk + shoot faster. Reverted spiders. Changed torch light radius. Multiplayer.
1.2.1: Multiplayer.
1.2: FIxed gamma changing. Buffed torch crafting. Slightly modified torch light radius. Increased spider size.
1.1: Launch.
Seems great, although I wouldn't always want Advaaaaaanced Darkness. Perhaps expand it a little, and allow for configuration, like, this type of darkness settles in New Moons, or really deep down like Bedrock fog. Just a thought. But, given the large amount of mods I have, and your disclaimer, I guess I'll have to miss out on this. I'm still gonna have one go though
EDIT: Yeah, either Forge, Optifine, Better Animations Collection, or another minecraft.jar mod or two doesn't like this mod. Oh well. If you'll update it to 1.6 when that happens today, I'll try it out.

If you can give me an error report, I might be able to pinpoint the issue. I'm suspecting Forge. I have no experience with configurations, so that is a no-go for now. If you want to temporarily disable the darkness effect, go into the options and change the Brightness. Restarting the client will set it back. Just a holdover technique while I look into this.

It didn't drop an error report. Sorry. I'll try once more, though. Sad to hear about the configs. Perhaps as you learn more, then.
EDIT: Yeah, it left off on a black screen after logging in, it won't go to the MOJANG screen.

Can you try and pinpoint which mod(s) is throwing the error? From there I'll try and resolve it.

Best thing to do would simply be to install Advanced Darkness and one of the other .jar editors at a time to test which one does which. I'm sorry to say I'm just that teensy tiny bit too lazy to do it myself. I'm sure someone else is bored and can do it ;I

I have the time. What is the full list of the mods you have?
I was just testing this mod with forge. It seems everything except the APA class works fine, when the APA class is added to the jar forge will no longer load. However even without this class the mod seems to work ok. Just about to do tests with optifine.
EDIT: Not compatible with optifine HD and Standard, as both of these modify AVY, optifine Light may work as it doesn't use this class.
Thanks for doing the research for me, but unfortunately with the way compilers work (at least how I believe they work), I have absolutely no idea which .java file is compiled into APA.class. I'll look into both OptiFine and Forge, and see how that works out later tonight.

Well, thanks for being so understanding. If this mod really does evolve much further, it'd probably be a really cool thing to have.

When you are reobsufocating the classes, it says something like:
You don't really need this mod, you only have to edit your options.txt file in you .minecraft folder. There is a line in there that says gamma:1.0, change it from 1 to -1 and you get the same effect.
Sorry, I don't want to sound mean but I just wanted to let you know that there's already a way to do this.

Read the forum. I've already stated this. (ditto on mean-sounding). It's under "Advanced Darkness - Notes".
Also, updated! Fixed bugs and edited spiders for funs.

Out of curiosity, can I install this and forge at the same time? That would be helpful.
That's up to you to test. I have no idea!

Have yet to install it, but from the screenshot, it looks very good.

When you are reobsufocating the classes, it says something like:
"Outputed whatever.java to aa.class"
Sorry, I don't want to sound mean but I just wanted to let you know that there's already a way to do this.
Ten minutes before I checked the forum and saw your response, I saw this while updating. Thanks, though!
