KBI Enriched Gravel Mod
Mod Review for version 1.1.0 by WhuzzaBuzz:
(Note that you can disable the drops that require other mods via configuration.)
Mod Spotlight for version 1.0.0 by Dark_Newt:
Ever wandered upon a gravel pit and thought, "Oh no, not another one of these stupid things"? Found yourself with stacks and stacks of this block that has practically no uses? Been exasperated by how hard it is to get flint without wasting 30 experience levels on a Fortune III shovel? This mod aims to help you fix these problems.
Enriched Gravel comes in 8 types, from Slightly Enriched through Very Enriched, which spawn inside the naturally occurring gravel veins already found in the world. Slightly Enriched spawns the most often, while Highly Enriched and Very Enriched spawn the least often. All types will drop a single block of regular vanilla Gravel, but each type has additional drops depending on its rarity. Slightly Enriched Gravel will only drop a tiny chunk of dirt, stone, sand, clay, or flint, but Very Enriched might give you chunks of obsidian, shards of diamond or emerald, or expensive mod materials such as a nugget of cobalt, ardite, or titanium, or a piece of ruby.
Yes, that's right. Mod materials. Some things you might find include copper and tin; silver, lead, nickel, and platinum; titanium, zinc, and aluminum (or aluminium to those Brits out there); rubies, sapphires, and green sapphires; peat and apatite; and sulfur and saltpeter.
"But surely that's overpowered!" you're thinking. "Gravel is so common, and some of these materials are pretty expensive normally!"
Well, here's the deal. Enriched gravel appears identical in the world to the regular gravel it's found in, so you have to mine through a lot of regular stuff to get a little bit of the good stuff! And once you get it, it's not just dropping diamonds. I mined through 2 full stacks of just enriched gravel, and my results were: 64 + 64 gravel, 15 chunks of dirt, 13 piles of sand, 12 chunks of stone, 12 pieces of flint, 7 tin nuggets, 6 piles of saltpeter, 5 chunks of netherrack, 4 each of iron, silver, and gold nuggets, and less than 4 pieces of anything else, with no shards of diamond or emerald at all.
However, there's more! Lots more!
You can craft a Gravel Sifter to increase your yield! A sifter, made by placing three sticks on the left, three sticks on the right, and three string up the middle, will let you turn any vanilla gravel you have lying around into flint by mining (post-1.2.0) or right-clicking on (pre-1.2.0) the gravel while holding the sifter. If you take it mining with you, and come across enriched gravel, using a sifter instead of mining the gravel can give you up to three bonus bits instead of one! But each sifter can only go through a stack 20 blocks, as of 1.1.0, of gravel, before needing to be replaced.
(Picture of a Sifter after right-clicking on Slightly Enriched Gravel, getting a stack of 2 flint, a clay ball, and a chunk of dirt)
To get a little more yield out of your tool, you can put three of them together in a vertical row, with iron nuggets in the corners and gold nuggets on the sides, to get a Sturdy Sifter. It can go through a full stack, and, has another neat little bonus!
By adding iron ingots to the corners, and aluminum nuggets (if aluminum is disabled via configuration, iron nuggets) on the top, bottom, and sides, you can make a Sifter Block! It'll convert any enriched gravel that falls onto it in the same way a handheld sifter will, as well as regular gravel. However, it also has a very small chance of giving you a resource chunk from regular gravel, too!
Now, the problem is, once you place it, you can't pick it up again. The metal breaks, and you'll only get that Sturdy Sifter back. This makes it a little tricky to use it, since you can't pick it up and move it, and you can't pick up Enriched Gravel and move it. Such a quandary, isn't it? We could use pistons, but those are so tedious to use to move things around over more than a couple of blocks.
Good thing we have Gravel Buckets (post-1.2.0)! Right-click on gravel or Enriched Gravel to scoop it up and place it elsewhere, such as on top of your handy-dandy Sifter Block!
And if that's not enough for you, and you want _more_ neato things, try crafting a single block of Cobblestone, Netherrack, or Obsidian and throwing the result at a zombie or two!
Now that you're hooked, here's how to use this mod!
Installation
This mod requires Minecraft Forge version 608 or higher to be installed. It is version independent, meaning that it should work on Minecraft 1.5.1 and most versions shortly afterwards, until Mojang, Minecraft Coder Pack, or Forge change something major.
Forge installation is pretty simple. Download the version of Forge you require, and use a program such as 7-zip to put Forge's files into minecraft.jar. If you don't know how to do this, there are thousands of both written and video tutorials out there. It should also work on a server; just install Forge to the server jar instead of the client jar.
Once you have a working Forge install, place the download into your /mods folder and go!
Enriched gravel will only spawn in newly generated Overworld chunks. This means that if you install it on an existing world, you'll only find it in places where you've never explored before or in MystCraft dimensions. (It should also work if another mod adds a dimension with gravel in it. If not, post to let me know and I can try to fix it.)
It's also highly recommended, but not at all necessary, to install some, if not all, of the following mods to get full usage out of Enriched Gravel:
You ought to have the gist of the mod from the description at the top of the post, but here's a short, simple, to-the-point version.
Enriched Gravel can occur anywhere inside normal Gravel. Gravel pits, village streets, gravel beaches if a mod adds them...
There are 8 types of Enriched Gravel, going from most common and least valuable drops to least common and most valuable drops.
Enriched Gravel, when mined normally, will drop one gravel and a random resource item.
A Gravel Sifter can be crafted by placing 3 sticks on the left side of a crafting table, 3 sticks on the right, and 3 string in the middle. It has 64 20 uses.
A Gravel Sifter, when used to mine a block of gravel (post-1.2.0) or right-clicked on a normal block of gravel (pre-1.2.0), will convert it into flint.
A Gravel Sifter, when used to mine a block of Enriched Gravel (post-1.2.0) or right-clicked on a block of Enriched Gravel (pre-1.2.0), will convert it into 2 resource drops instead of 1 resource drop and a block of regular gravel.
A Sturdy Sifter can be crafted with the pattern:
ISI
GSG
ISI
where I is iron nugget, G is gold nugget, and S is Gravel Sifter. It has 64 uses.
A Sifter Block can be crafted with the pattern:
IAI
ASA
IAI
where I is iron ingot, A is aluminum nugget (or iron nugget), and S is Sturdy Sifter. It must be placed in the world, and has infinite uses. (post-1.1.0)
A Sifter Block must be mined with a pickaxe. It drops only a Sturdy Sifter.
A Sifter Block will convert all enriched gravel that falls onto it into two resources, and ordinary gravel that falls on top of it into flint. It also has a rare chance at creating a random resource drop from ordinary gravel as well.
Buckets can be used to scoop up gravel and Enriched Gravel via right-clicking, and then right-clicked again anywhere else to place. (post-1.2.0)
Resource drops need to be crafted either in a 2x2 square or a 3x3 square to get the full resource. Some resources require other mods installed to be useful.
Here's a list of resource drops, and how to make stuff out of them!

Changelog
Upcoming [Unreleased]
Added: Coal Chunks can be used as furnace fuel for 2 items; no bonus or loss compared to usual Coal
Added: Ingots and Gems that you can craft the nuggets into.
Added: Dusts are their own item now, and there are metal dusts too.
Added: Alloys. Lots of them. They will be crafted with dusts.
Added: Metadata to the Sifter Block; now, there's also the Simple Grinder, the Sharp Grinder, the Mob Grinder, and lastly the Always-On Grinder, which I am considering making creative only, but I may just add a recipe with redstone blocks and rubies.
Fixed: Sifter block side textures showing a bit of net. I fixed this in two ways; both by adjusting the size of the block, and fixing my texture method that Forge broke by changing the names on me
Fixed: Sifter blocks looking weird when held in 3rd person
Fixed: Enriched Gravel dropping items when gameRule doTileDrops is false
Changed: Sifter blocks need to be connected to something on the side, like trapdoors do -- other sifter blocks are not valid
Fixed: Sifter blocks won't make you start suffocating when you jump under them
NOTE: I won't release this until I have a bit more usefulness in the update! Some priorities are a powered machine sharing a block ID with the sifter that can grind through solid blocks, and placer blocks that will allow itemstacks thrown onto it to be used up to 3 blocks below them in the world somehow. Automatic crop planting or fertilizing, ore placing for use with the aforementioned grinder, eggs or rocks being launched... I'd also like to add a fancy special Tile-Entity decorative/storage block, with overlaid connectable textures, but this may be difficult. And if I do that, I also want to do slabs. That can stack with each other with no limitations. Including sideways. Yep, like I said, might be difficult.
1.3.0 (The-More-Mods-The-Better Update)
Changed: Built around Forge 678 instead of 608; should still be compatible with older versions
Added: support for ThaumCraft 3's Amber (as a direct drop); has same chance as obsidian chunks and chips of ruby, sapphire, and green sapphire
Added: an amber gem item for when TC3 is not installed; can be crafted back and forth with TC3 amber to interchange, and both are registered as gemAmber in the Ore Dictionary
Added: support for Thermal Expansion's sulfur to be crafted to and from piles of sulfur
Added: Jade chips at same chance as gold and silver; I don't know of any other mod that uses Jade but it's got the usual gem OreDict registrations and I plan on using it myself
Added: support for Karuberu's Mud Mod, in the same way with mud blobs as Amber, but mud is more common, of course
Added: Karuberu's Peat Bricks to "brickPeat" in the OreDictionary, allowing peat chunks to be crafted into them
Changed: If the Resources module is disabled, the Sturdy Sifter can be crafted with gold nuggets instead of iron nuggets, though if another mod like ThaumCraft or Thermal Expansion or GregTech adds iron nuggets, you can still use those. If you disable Resources and don't have a mod that adds alumin(i)um nuggets, turn "Enable aluminum nuggets in Sifter Block recipe" in Enriched Gravel.cfg to false to use the other two recipes.
"Added": Red Rock chunks. I wanted to do this in the original release but there was no OreDictionary for it, and I didn't want to do reflection right away. But now I am doing reflection, so you have throwable red rock chunks that are compatible with both ExtraBiomes and Biomes O'Plenty.
Added: At the suggestion of Karuberu, a new API file, CustomSifterDropAPI, which allows modders to add extra functionality to the Sifter Block. It's now used internally to make sand blocks sift into 4 sand piles 9/10 times, and 3 sand piles and a clay ball 1/10 times. It's metadata-sensitive, and supports constant drops, random drops, and null drops (set the itemstack parameter's itemID to 0, like, new ItemStack(0, 0, 0)). Blocks don't have to naturally be affected by gravity for this to work at the moment.
Fixed: handheld sifters not causing a block update, meaning gravel above a sifted block would float in mid-air
Fixed: using a water or lava bucket on gravel giving a gravel bucket (I seriously thought the event was only fired by empty buckets... my bad)
Added: Cracked Sand piles, compatible with EBXL
Added: Sound effect to the Sifter Block
1.2.1 (The Modulization Update)
Changed: Major code restructuring, splitting the mod into two modules, Resources and Enriched Gravel
Added: an API for other mods to add or remove drops to Enriched Gravel
Changed: Relocated configuration file from /config/KBIgravelore to the /config/KBI folder
Added: configuration options (Resources.cfg) to disable certain resources from everything (gravel drops, OreDictionary, recipes) except the Creative Menu
Added: configuration options (Enriched Gravel.cfg) to disable parts of the mod, including the Sifter Block, Enriched Gravel, Handheld Sifters, or Gravel Buckets
Added: If Handheld Sifters are disabled, the Sifter Block is crafted with a block of wool instead of a Sturdy Sifter
Changed: Crafting Sturdy Sifters with Alumin(i)um nuggets is now a separate option from enabling Aluminum nuggets, so you can use GregTech nuggets or such without enabling Aluminum nugget drops
Info: If the Resources module is disabled, currently there is no way to craft sifters without another mod adding iron nuggets; just disable all the mod resources individually in Resources.cfg or disable them as drops in Enriched Gravel.cfg and you'll be able to use iron nuggets.
1.2.0 (The Kate Wetherall Update)
Changed/Added: Made Stone Chunks, Netherrack Chunks, and Obsidian Chunks throwable by right-clicking
Info: Stone Chunks deal 1.5 hearts of damage, Obsidian Chunks deal 3 hearts, and Netherrack Chunks set undead mobs on fire for a few seconds
Added: Gravel Buckets
Info: Buckets can be used to carry any type of gravel without loss, though you don't know what type you have, so you can take enriched gravel to sifter blocks now
Changed: functionality of handheld sifters to left-clicking and mining instead of instantly upon right-clicking
1.1.0 (The Sifter Update)
Fixed: accidental infinite zinc recipe
Added: individual configuration for nearly every drop except flint, sand, stone, dirt, and clay (saltpeter and sulfur are grouped together)
Changed: Reduced Gravel Sifter uses to 20; added Sturdy Sifter with full 64 uses, crafted with 3 Gravel Sifters, 2 gold nuggets, and 4 iron nuggets
Added: Sifter Block, crafted with a Sturdy Sifter, iron ingots, and aluminum nuggets if enabled, else iron nuggets
Info: Sifter Block allows bonus resource drops from regular gravel, but when mined after placing, only drops the Sturdy Sifter
Fixed: the wild movement of the resource drops
Added: Nether Quartz chunks
Added: Enriched Gravel to the Nether's gravel pits, at slightly higher values
Added: a Generation section to the config; now you can specify whether you want to find Enriched Gravel in the Overworld, Nether, Twilight Forest, and Mystcraft Ages
1.0.2 (The You've-Got-To-Have-Experience-To-Fix-Bugs Update)
Changed: Enriched Gravel will only drop resources when broken by a player
Changed: The Sifter will only drop 2 resources max, instead of 3. This is related to above
Fixed: possible "ghost" items when mining Enriched Gravel
Added: If a newly-added config option is set to true (it is by default), you can craft resources back into chunks or nuggets
Added: Breaking Enriched Gravel drops experience orbs! You get less XP with a sifter than by mining
Changed: Redstone chunks and sulfur/saltpeter piles are interchangeable with GregTech small dusts via OreDictionary
1.0.1 (The Configuration Update)
Fixed: Enriched Gravel dropping Platinum nuggets when it should've dropped Nickel (wrong metadata by 1)
Added: "easy Lapis" option, enabled by default, that changes recipe from 3x3 lapis chunks = 1 lapis dye to 2x2 lapis chunks = 2 lapis dye
Added: Many configuration options to disable potentially overpowered, unusable, or otherwise unwanted drops
Added: gunpowder recipe, with 4 sulfur piles, 4 saltpeter piles, and 1 coal

I have not tested it on SMP myself; however, I have no reason to believe it won't work. It should work on dedicated SMP and LAN servers as well as normal SSP, so if you test it and it does not work on SMP, let me know and I'll do my absolute best to fix that.

Updated to version 1.0.1. This adds some configuration options to disable certain resource drops, as well as adding a gunpowder recipe with sulfur and saltpeter piles. It also adds a bugfix for platinum dropping when nickel should.
did a mod spotlight, maybe u can put my video up here?
Awesome The only thing you forgot to do was actually go exploring and find some in the world, but apart from that a very nice mod spotlight. Added to the OP
Do enchanted tools affect the gravel in any way? Also, is the sifter able to be enchanted?
Efficiency should work just fine, I do not know if Silk Touch will allow you to harvest the enriched gravel blocks (probably "yes, but you'll only ever get Slightly Enriched"), but Fortune tools should not effect gravel, to the best of my knowledge.
And the sifter is not enchantable. It will always drop 2 to 3 chunks instead of 0 or 1, and currently converts the block instantly upon right-click, so consider it a specialized type of Fortune + Efficiency tool, my little way of making getting diamonds from gravel just that tiny bit more difficult than attacking a blob of gravel with your super-duper magic diamond spoon.

Ok, Thanks
Edit: Can you add redrock shards and cracked sand piles for ExtrabiomesXL to the gravel drops Please?
Edit: Can you add redrock shards and cracked sand piles for ExtrabiomesXL to the gravel drops Please?
Actually, I tried to do redrock chunks in the original release, but EBXL, despite registering stoneRedRock in the Ore Dictionary, wouldn't let me access redrock for recipes via that method. I'll have to do some reflection to do that, so it's a maybe and I want to.

You have to right-click the sifter on enriched gravel. Left-clicking will mine it normally. I may fix that eventually, but not in the release I'm working on at this moment.
What is coming in 1.0.2:
Enriched Gravel will only drop resources when broken by a player
The Sifter will only drop 2 resources max, instead of 3. This is related to above
Fix for possible "ghost" items when mining Enriched Gravel
If a newly-added config option is set to true (it is by default), you can craft resources back into chunks or nuggets
Breaking Enriched Gravel drops experience orbs! You get less XP with a sifter than by mining
Redstone chunks and sulfur/saltpeter piles are interchangeable with GregTech small dusts via OreDictionary

Awesome The only thing you forgot to do was actually go exploring and find some in the world, but apart from that a very nice mod spotlight. Added to the OP

If they want to include Enriched Gravel in FTB, Tekkit, or any other modpack, they're more than welcome to.

Actually, I tried to do redrock chunks in the original release, but EBXL, despite registering stoneRedRock in the Ore Dictionary, wouldn't let me access redrock for recipes via that method. I'll have to do some reflection to do that, so it's a maybe and I want to.
