There is a slight problem if the frame is surrounded by blocks:

Yes, that happens if you flip the map. If you flip one map, you have to make sure you flip all the others. I personally prefer not to flip them, because that way Up=North, Down=South, etc.
I'm guessing your lake faces the North, that's why all of the other positions look wrong.
Is there a specific pattern to put the maps and frames in because wheneven i put the map in the frame it shows up inside the frame
I suspect you're trying to place this mod in the mods folder, as normal for Forge. Unfortunately, Cartographer has to go into the JAR itself, so load it through Magic Launcher or MCPatcher.
Do you think it would be worth it to look into access transformers from Forge, to make it a mods folder mod. For a few lines of code changed it won't be too hard to do

Dude... I told y'all I was a noob at Java. But just by writing "access transformers" you have given me a nice start point to improve the mod. I'll look into it, for sure. It'd be nice to make it easier to use.

I'm having this glitch where if im looking at a map up close the surrounding maps dissapear. I'm also running treecapitator.
It's not a glitch. I mean, it is, but it's not something I can fix. Or maybe I can, I don't know
That happens when the game detects that you are no longer looking at the map. Remember that the Item Frame is quite small, so the game will only care about that little area.
If you want to watch them closely, may I recommend using Optifine's zoom feature?
Could it be possible that we don't see people's position arrows when placed on a wall ? That would be great !
People's position? You mean that little green arrow on the map? That means an Item Frame with a map is placed on that location, it is not a person.
You can edit your map_icons.png on the resource pack you prefer. The file is found here:

Can anyone recommend a mod that will make maps without having to travel all over the world?
As Ezer said, I don't think that's possible. But there's a way...
I'm not quite sure how that works, but I think you can edit your maps by going into the game's files (or server's files if SMP) and put anything on them.
With that said, you can use a software like Amidst to take a picture of the world, use that to make little images and put them on the maps.
Again, I'm not sure if that would work, but you can try
Dude, I've been trying. I really have been. But it's hard to follow that tutorial since it was made for MC 1.4 :/
I'm gonna keep trying, but I'll definitely let you know if I lose all hope.
If you have this project set up on GitHub, as public or private I could lend you a hand. Overall though most of the things in that tutorial are the same, just a few small changes

Dang, I didn't know I could do something like this, but still you'd end up consuming hundreds of MB to generate a map, then you may say "bah, I don't like this world, trash it". Well, I suppose the guy just wants to preview the world.
Amidst is a cool world previewer no needing to generate an actual world. You can preview dozens of thousands kilometers. The only bad thing is that it can spoil the position of structures like villages and strongholds.
There are two map viewers (for existing worlds) that I like to use: Cartograph G and Minutor.
Can someone please help. I really want this mod but when I download the file from media fire I get a .CLASS file with the name bgs.class. I want to install it for forge. Im on a mac if that affects anything.

There's a tutorial on how to do that at the beginning of the thread. I'll put it here just for you A. Easy
- Use the official launcher to download and start once Minecraft 1.6.2.
- Use the Forge installer to install Forge
- Use the official launcher to start once Minecraft with the Forge profile.
- Start Magic Launcher
- Click "Setup"
- Select Environment "Forge9.10.X.Y"
- Click "Add" -> select the Cartographer ZIP file
- Click "Advanced"
- In the field "Parameters" add "-Dfml.ignorePatchDiscrepancies=true"
- Click "OK"
- Login and play
B. Not so easy
(not working for Forge #780 and #781)
- Use the official launcher to download and start once Minecraft 1.6.2.
- Use the Forge installer to install Forge
- Go to the minecraft base folder (the official launchers shows it when you click "Edit Profile" as "Game Directory")
- Go in subfolder "Versions"
- Go in subfolder "Forge9.10.X.Y"
- Copy the files from the Cartographer ZIP file to "Forge9.10.X.Y.jar" as usual (you can use the 1.5.2 instructions for this) and remove the META-INF folder from "Forge9.10.X.Y.jar".
- Start the official launcher
- Select profile "Forge"
- Click "Edit Profile"
- Select the checkbox "JVM Arguments" and in the field next to it add
"-Dfml.ignoreInvalidMinecraftCertificates=true -Dfml.ignorePatchDiscrepancies=true" (Leave a space after anything that was already there)
- Click "Save Profile"
- Click "Play" or "Login" to start the game. If only "Play Offline" is available, then log out and log in again to fix it.

What do you mean inside the Item Frame? Can you send me a screenshot?

There is a really nice tutorial on the forge wiki about access transformers and how they work. http://www.minecraftforge.net/wiki/Using_Access_Transformers
Let me know if you need any help with anything, as I may be able to give you a hand.

No, it's impossible. You need to walk to generate the world, thus it's not possible to map something that doesn't exist.
But you can preview worlds by seed number with Amidst: http://www.minecraft...ome-etc-finder/

Sure thing, mate. It's really easy to make this mod for a non-Forge installation, so I'll keep doing it until the day I die
