Have you ever thought it would be great to have carryable source of light? Well, now you can make one!
Lantern was originally made by me as part of CaveGen mod, but I decided to make it as separate mod for those who would like to have Lantern but don't like my CaveGen mod.
Note: This mod also works as plugin for my CaveGen mod. That means you can use it alone, but when you install it with CaveGen, you will be able to use Glow shard from CaveGen mod to create Lantern too.

If you fly with lantern equipped the light will not update as fast as you travel, resulting in occasional spots of light in your trail. These will disappear if you walk over them or you load your world again. They won't cause any trouble.

Recipe for crafting Lantern. Note: You can change the glowstone dust into other item in your config file. But if you are playing on server, only server recipe will work.

Or place it on ground/hang it from ceiling (it requires solid block under or over itself). The Lantern will be rotated towards you when you place it down.

Configuring the mod
You can configure some parts of this mod to work as you desire. Simply open reaper_lantern.cfg file located in .minecraft/config folder and modify the corresponding value
3D Lantern in hand - If set to 1 lantern will use 3D model when held. If set to 0, lantern will use 2D model when held(default 1)
Belt Lantern - If set to 1 lanterns will emit light when in hotbar. If set to 0, lanterns will emit light only when held(default 0)
Lantern light value - Determines how much light will lantern emit. Value 5-15(default 10)
Lantern material - Determines which item/block should be used at the bottom of the lantern recipe. If client setting will be different from server setting, only server recipe will work(default: 348 - glowstone dust)
[Server setting]Force belt lantern setting - If set to 1, server forces it's setting of Belt Lantern option to clients. If set to 0, clients will use their own setting(default 0)
Installation
To install Lantern mod, go to C:/Users/Yourusername/AppData/Roming/.minecraft/mods/ and put the whole archive(do not unzip it!) into this folder.
If the folder mods is not there, launch Minecraft after installation of Forge once and it should create the folder.
1.44 - You can now hang lantern from slabs, stairs and fences, some minor improvements of the code
1.43 - Light value of placed latern now corresponds to the light value emitted by lantern held in hand, lightning algorithm improved - you now don't have to make a step after you equip lantern in order for it to start emitting light, dynamic recipe - you can now set which item/block will be used in recipe instead of glowstone! Just change the id in config file(note that if you are playing on server, only server set recipe will work, no matter what you have set in your config)
1.42 - Major code cleanup, new config entry for servers allowing them to force their setting of belt lantern (on/off) to connected clients. This setting is reset each time player enters a world, which means no restart of Minecraft is required in case you want to switch to different server or play in SP, Faster packet handling on server side
1.41 - Lantern 3D model visible when held in hand (this can be turned on and off in config file), amount of light emitted by lantern can now be configured via cofig file(it can be value from 5 to 15, 10 being default), when on server amount of emitted light is determined by value set on server side, unlike the belt lantern option
1.4 - Complete rewrite of the lighting algorithm - faster, better, easier to maintain , fixed bug that prevented this mod from working on servers, fixed bug that could potentially cause problems with tile entities on servers, other players can now see light emitted by your lantern!

Can you please give me the code that makes items in your hand glow? I would like to make something that does that, but I don't know how. BTW, nice job!
Very nice man. Here's some random ideas for your mod!
- Flashlight -> blocks forward whereever your pointing dithering outwards every 2 blocks (burns logs)
- Floating Lantern -> 10 blocks all around (burns gold)
- Lazer light ->10 blocks straight beam of light (burns diamond)
- Light Bulbs -> Lights that go inside (consumes electric - could be recharged by burning coal?)
- Candle -> 4 blocks of light all around (burns sticks)
Oh, man, this is awesome! I mean, Dynamic Lights does the same thing, but it adds an interesting game element since you have to craft and earn a portable light.

Would it be at all possible to include the version number in the file name? A bunch of the mods I use don't do that and it gets a little irritating to keep looking at the mcmod.info for the version number (if it even exists).
Other than that, this mod has found a "permanent" spot on my mod loadout. Now I can devote my coal/charcoal to other things. Thanks for this!

No, the video is from CaveGen mod and Lantern used to be part of it. It is now standalone mod. But you can download CaveGen mod for 1.4.6 and use the lantern there. Here is link to the thread:
