May I have permission to use this in my private server modpack?
Also, is it possible to put it in the mods folder, if you have forge installed, since on my modpack I want this mod to be optional.
I sent you a PM regarding mod pack permission
It is possible to install the mod in mods/: When you run the installer, there will be a list of choices on how you want to install it. Select Install in Forge, and a file called ChatLog.zip will be dropped in the mods folder automatically

I'm happy to announce support for Minecraft Classic! Install it using the normal installer.
A lot of thanks go to Steveice10 for creating the OpenClassic client. It's basically Forge for Classic. You'll need it if you want to install ChatLog for classic, so check it out http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1313535-

On vanilla 1.7.2 it crashes and doesn't launch the game (used installer as I was supposed to). Had it create a new profile for it and launched that, but fails.
(Note: the installer says it'll create Chatlog-1.6.4, despite being for 1.7.2 and creating a correct 1.7.2 profile)

Hi, Perturbee,
I can't stop thanking you for bringing this to my attention. I did a bit of testing and reprogramming to see what could cause it, but haven't been able to figure it out. I'm not able to reproduce the error, but if you give me some more information, I'll see if I can do something. Here's how:
I updated the installer to output a bunch of information about what happens when the installer is running, so I can more easily figure out what goes wrong. Download the installer again, put it in its own folder and rename it to installer.jar. Then open Notepad, enter the following lines:
... and save it as Install.bat in the same folder as the installer.jar. Run Install.bat and try installing as normally. When you've finished installing, send me the contents of log.txt (in spoiler tags! ) and, if there's something odd looking in the black window, screenshot it or copy it and send a sample to me
Thank you very much again
I'll do what I can to sort this out for you, and if I can't, I'll just add a mirror link to class files or something similar to the main post or installer.

Thank you a lot for reporting this. According to the log, net.minecraft.client.main.Main is being copied to the new jar, so I really wonder how Java doesn't pick it up. I can't fix it right now, and I don't really know why this is happening. I guess Java is being weird. I'll be adding an option to the installer soon so you can choose to install the mod manually later, in case this happens to other people while I figure this out. Either way, I'll host it on Dropbox for you now, but you'll unfortunately have to install it manually.

You're welcome, I have had enough experience with jiras, bugzillas, issue trackers and the likes to know what to provide or expect. I've been on both sides of the fence.
Thank you for the quick fix!
A future version with a manual install option is very welcome for those who don't know how to do it manually.
Edit: for some reason I don't get any chatlogs. At first I thought, but that's from using 1.6.4 in between.
ChatLog version 1.3.4 for Minecraft 1.7.3 has been released. It's (most likely) the first mod for Minecraft 1.7.3, and is built on the pre-release of 1.7.3 released yesterday. Not many changes since 1.7.2, but here's a quick summary:
CHANGELOG:
- Fixed a bug that would make chat be colored despite chat colors being turned off in settings
- Installer: Added a --verbose option for fixing bugs in the installer. You don't need to worry about this, it's to support a bug reporter that will obviously be used for reporting bugs.
- Installer: Added option to install manually. This will save a zip file with the mod's class files to a user-specified location, in case the installer doesn't work.

You're welcome If ChatLog for some odd reason doesn't work for 1.7.3, 1.7.2, 1.6.4 or other versions, just tell me and I'll do my best to fix whatever bugs are encountered. Obviously, ChatLog has to be installed, though, or logs... won't appear. :3

I'm not sure whether I'm doing something wrong or if the chatlog is the culprit.
This is what I did as a test:
- Removed every java version/SDK/FX from my system and rebooted
- Installed Java 7 update 45 (64 and 32 bit, system is 64, but some stuff requires the 32 bit)
- rebooted (again)
- moved .minecraft away
- started the launcher and had it install 1.7.2 and started it
- exited the game and the latest.log was written (showing [CHAT] too).
- copied the 1.7.2 version folder to CL-1.7.2
- renamed the jar and json to CL-1.7.2 and changed the ID in the json accordingly
- edited the jar (using Total Commander, which has a built-in archiver support)
- removed META-INF
- overwritten the bao.class with the one from the provided zip for 1.7.2
- started launcher
- Added a profile for CL-1.7.2 and started the game
- started a single player game
- exited the game and the latest.log was written (showing [CHAT] too), but no chatlog folder with dated html file
- started launcher
- started multiplayer game
- Connected to localhost (running a test bukkit 1.7.2)
- exited the game and the latest.log was written (showing [CHAT] too), but no chatlog folder with dated html file
So far no show for chatlogs at all!
I also tried the installer and used Standalone, but that gave the same crash as before.
The big difference with 1.6.4 is that I used Forge for that one with the Chatlog.zip and encountered no problems at all.

Something doesn't make sense about this. Using those exact procedures you gave, it should be possible to get ChatLog to work just fine. Look in your logs and see if you see lines with "[MOD] ChatLog". If there are none then Java is acting extremely weird, as code is there to make it write stuff to the log. The first such entry should be "[MOD] ChatLog - Initializing...", and if it isn't there then... I simply don't know what to say :/
I'll try and fetch some testers from the modding IRC channels, as you're not the only one to seemingly have problems with the mod and installer. Java must seem to hate mods. Do other mods for 1.7.2 work for you?

This is odd. Perturbee also had this bug, while I try to sort it out you can install it manually by using the 5th option in the installer (Manual installation). I've no idea what's causing this, and I can't reproduce it myself, but I'll be getting some testers to look into it and check it out.
In your ChatLog-1.7.3.jar file, is there a folder named "net", with subfolders "minecraft" -> "client" -> "main" and does that folder have a file called Main.class?

Nope, none of the [MOD] Chatlog entries (I do see them in my 1.6.4 logs)
The ones I would otherwise use (Rei's and optifine) aren't out for 1.7.2 officially. So chatlog is the only one at the moment.

Try installing this one: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/2109534-
See if that one works. If it doesn't, there would seem to be a problem with your computer. If it does, something is horribly wrong with my mod.
Haha, I've been modding too much! I work with java files when I mod, I knew there was something wrong about my reply, but I just couldn't figure out what xD

Well, this is odd, zoom works, so I added chatlog to that 1.7.2-jar and now both work. Maddening, but works!
I did also the reverse, adding zoom to the non-working CL-1.7.2 and that one works fine too now!
Some bits must have fallen over and climbed back up.

Minecraft 1.7.4 supported. The class files for 1.7.3 work just fine on 1.7.4, so the updated file is just updating the installer to install for 1.7.4.
Enjoy!

A lot of thanks go to Steveice10 for creating the OpenClassic client. It's basically Forge for Classic. You'll need it if you want to install ChatLog for classic, so check it out http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1313535-

+1 for reporting

Thank you a lot for reporting this. According to the log, net.minecraft.client.main.Main is being copied to the new jar, so I really wonder how Java doesn't pick it up. I can't fix it right now, and I don't really know why this is happening. I guess Java is being weird. I'll be adding an option to the installer soon so you can choose to install the mod manually later, in case this happens to other people while I figure this out. Either way, I'll host it on Dropbox for you now, but you'll unfortunately have to install it manually.

Again, thank you very much - you're one of the few really helpful people out there when it comes to reporting bugs!

I'm a bit at a loss what to try next...
1.7.3 release? F'n right!
Grats on first 1.7.3 mod. =D

I AM NOT YOUR PERSONAL MINECRAFT MOD SUPPORT AGENT, SO PLEASE DO NOT PM ME ABOUT PROBLEMATIC MODS THAT ARE NOT MINE. If you're having trouble/crashes with a mod, you'll have better luck resolving it in this forum section than PMing me. If you already made a topic, be patient about responses. If you have troubles with anything non-Minecraft related on your PC, I might be able to help, though, but no promises. Even though I could wish to be, I'm not a wizard.
Nope, none of the [MOD] Chatlog entries (I do see them in my 1.6.4 logs)
The ones I would otherwise use (Rei's and optifine) aren't out for 1.7.2 officially. So chatlog is the only one at the moment.
Ummm, mine says Main.class, not Main.java

Well, glad to hear you got it working! If you need more assistance or have any suggestions, feel free to reply. I'll be here to respond to whatever inquiries I get
