I like the concept of being able to choose between cursory research or thorough research, but in practice it is a non-choice. Cursory is better just using basic math (assuming you don't change the settings, of course.) It'd be a different story if there was an actual limit on how often you could 'research' (for example, you could only click the hourglass once every 30s or something), but that would be a pointless limitation. It might be better if cursory/thorough were removed, or if there was another cost associated with cursory research - for example, if you had to 'dilute' the source material with other materials.
For example, if you want to do thorough research on an item, there's a 50% chance of losing that item and a 75% chance of successfully learning something from that item. If you wanted to do cursory research on the same item, you -have- to put that item + 1 other item (for example, cobblestone) on the research table. You would only research the primary item (so there's no chance of learning anything from the cobblestone), and you have a 20% chance of losing the primary item and a 30% chance of losing the secondary item, and a 25% chance of successfully learning something from the primary item.
This makes it so that even though cursory is simply better mathematically, there is still a cost (although admittedly something of minimal value). It's not a hard choice to decide which is better, but at least it's not a non-choice.

Believe it or not I remember seeing a timer that clocked down while the item was researched during one of the preview vids he put up, I wonder what happened. I can only assume Azanor decided to scrap that.

*Still has not figured out how to create alembics*
As TwoThe pointed out you need to keep researching if you already have unlocked Basic Flux Research then that's the thing you want to look at. If not... keep plugging away until you find the right stuff.

Flux you say. Hm.
(Flux is basically the one thing I have zero of, I had to NEI myself some netherwart just to get past UTFT).
Anyway:
Statistics of cursory/thorough:
20% success
25% item loss
vs
50% success
75% item loss
Assuming a success nets you 10% progress, then cursory will take an average of 12.5 items and 50 clicks, while thorough will take an average of 15 items and 20 clicks.

Or do what I do and chuck stuff into the table at random....

I'm having an issue where my research progress is erased every time I log in. I am using MultiMC and am running some other Forge mods, but there are no ID conflicts and the Forge Modloader script is not showing any errors. I can research things just fine, but it does not remember them if I exit the Instance. Even going to the main menu and then re-entering the world causes it to revert to no progress. Suggestions?
The Wand of Excavation shows particle effects from the wrong block when it breaks certain blocks. If the block utilizes a damage value to distinguish it from another, the particles from the breaking effect will display as those of the block without a damage value.
That is, breaking with the Wand of Excavation any infused stone or amber will give particles from the Cinnabar Ore texture. The same goes for forestry ores giving particles with the Apatite Ore texture, and it also applies to Thermal Expansion ores, thought NEI isn't showing me that block ID without a damage value.
I'm using the FTB Launcher and the FTB Magic World modpack (v5). I don't not have any other mods applied. Specifically I am NOT using Optifine.
Probably a stupid question, but is there a way to have four alembics on a crucible AND a Tallow Golem?
Yes indeed you can have at least 2 tallow golems and 4 alembics as that is my current setup, the golems will occasionally have a bit of a dance on top of the alembics but otherwise it works fine.
Oh by the way! I'd like to make a suggestion for something. What if we could craft a peice of paper together with a phial of Essentia to get a wall decal of that Essentia symbol? Would be EXTREMELY helpful for sorting things, and would be a nice bit of extra decorative flair.

Er...Back up a sec. I think you're on the wrong thread, because that sounds like Thaumcraft 2.

I like this. Even if just for decorative purposes, or labeling your jars for when your goggles break...
If nobody answered you (Highly unlikely), you have a ID error that replaced the copper ore with the Blue Pipe Wire.
Ya, only one person bothered to respond. No suprising though. Anyway, I actually used the latest verison of Buildcraft and the ores returning blue pipe wires have been fixed, though whenever leaves from Rubber Trees return what are supposed to be sapplings, they are actually are green pipe wires. :/
I'm loving the mod so far, but there is one.. Very big problem on my private server. We use Mo' Creatures, and upon installing this mod... All of the creatures from Mo' Creatures stopped spawning naturally! Additionally, only Zombies spawn. No Skeletons, Spiders or anything else. We rely on Mo' Creatures for fur and hide trading, and while the animals can be spawned with spawning eggs we have no way to access them normally. Is this some sort of feature with this mod, and if so is there a way to disable it?

Actually I think that depends on the research. I have the impression that Thorough mode in fact is more cost-effective with more complex researching.
Or maybe it depends on the material, since richer (in terms of aspects) materials give more progress.

I figured. But I haven't found any research that leads there.

Thorough is just worse.
Doesn't work when you have no flux materials
You'll research everything else EXCEPT what you're looking for.
Right-click on the block WITH inventory, not the ground that is adjacent to the block.
(If you want a golem next to a furnace, but not on top, right click the SIDE of the furnace, not the ground the golem would be standing on).

Golems do not take block space, so you just add all the things together and i work just fine.
And one of the thing i would really like to see in TC3 is a bunch of magic sensors for all kind of things
