Can anybody give me recommended pc specs for running shaders smoothly? I have a geforce GT 640 and and i7 @4hz idk why it laggs. My hard drive is pretty old though.
As jschroedi statet. MC is taking alot of resources from your GPU. You need to upgrade/replace it if possible, Remember to watch out for how much WAT your pc currently has and how much it can run. By upgrading gour GPU you will get alot better results.
As far as I know, there is no single GPU 2x as fast as a 980. Maybe some SLI setup could theoretically be 2x faster than a 980, but Minecraft doesn't support SLI (and I'm partly sure that the Shader mod doesn't support SLI, either.)
Also, since no one here stated their screen resolutions there can be some fairly major differences in FPS with similar GPU's. That one guy that got 40fps with the shader on his 980 may have been playing on 1080p or even 1440p, whilst treerexaudi could be playing on the slightly better Titan X and be playing on 720p.
I suggest that the resolutions, exact GPU models (rather than just "an OC'd evga"), along with the video settings be stated to get a more accurate comparison. I don't care where this conversations goes; I won't be returning to respond.
So, with my old yet (semi) capable PC has been having some strange lag issues with any shader pack I used, thus why I'm posting this here rather than on a specific shader pack's page. Whenever I hold a block and/or encounter water or lava my frame rate tanks down to ridiculous lows, regardless of how well my frame rate was before encountering one of these things. The GIF below shows my issue fairly well:
(note: this gif portrays my frame rate choppier than it actually is)
I have tried turning VBO's on/off, lowering graphics settings, etc. Any ideas on how to fix it? Thanks for your time :)!
PC specs:
Core 2 Extreme QX6850 (Intel quad core clocked at 3GHZ)
4GB RAM (3gb usable)
GTS 250 1GB (Even if it's a crap GPU, as you can see in the GIF, it gets me a good 80fps on Sildurs Lite)
Those spikes may have a LOT to do with the fact you're running the game on only 0.5GB RAM assigned. A miracle it does not crash with memory errors.
That is also a big factor. You only have 4 GB of RAM and 32-bit windows 10. You might have more RAM but 32-bit windows can only use up to 4. If you can upgrade to 64-bit.

Minecraft only really needs 4.

I have allocated 1GB of RAM to Minecraft and I have noticed no improvement. Also, when I am holding an item and lagging out, the percentage of RAM used doesn't go up.
As for what jschroedl said about me using an old version of shaders, it should be noted that this happens with any shader pack I use. I have so far tried a new version of Kuda shaders, SEUS shaders, and Sildur's shaders, all with the same issue.
Honestly I don't think RAM is the issue here, as I had an old PC (Pentium Dual Core e5200, 3GB RAM, GT 730, 32-bit Windows 7) that ran Sildur's lite at 60 fps-- without the frame issues that I'm getting now.
I am unable to get 64 bit windows at the moment since I'm too busy to transfer everything over and take the few hours to re-install windows.
I will try an old version of Minecraft shaders to try and work out if this is a bug added in the latest versions.
By "1.8" do you mean only 1.8? because you can use the shadermod for only specific versions of forge with 1.8. If you want 1.8.7 or above then use optifine, shadermod is built-in in the latest version of optifine. Look on page 1 of the post it explains everything about 1.8.

awesome mod I get 100 fps with continuum shaders
I doubt 100fps as a GTX 980 gets 40fps.
Unless your running fast graphics render distance 2

There are video cards that are twice as good as a 980

I know, just seems unlikely since they're expensive.

lol no XD
want me to post screen shot ?
Its EVGA overclocked with a 20% overclocked system cpu
You dont need to screenshot, I just dont expect anyone on minecraft to be using that good of a gpu.

well prepare your self
The only game I play on my pc is minecraft XD

Gtx titan x has plently of power to potenially run shaders over 100fps

I noticed that you are using an older version of the shaderpack. You could try using Sildurs updated shaderpack.
His/Her latest "Lite" version is 1.13. You are using 1.054 Lite.

Thanks for the help so far everyone :)!

Have a nice day :D!
Okay, so I have tested three versions of shaders now:
1.8 Shaders w/ Optifine - Lag issue when holding blocks
1.8 Shaders - Lag issue when holding blocks
1.7.10 Shaders - Only minor lag issues when looking at water. Overall, a far more playable experience.
This here narrows down that the framerate issues aren't due to optifine, and most of my lag issues are due to something added in the 1.8 version.
Try updating the shaderpack you are using.

This mod is great but some other mod maker should make it so that you don't see the sun or bright lights in caves .-. its kinda strange
