Look, all the discussion about adf.ly is nonsensical. Either we're making a payment with our time or we aren't. If we are, then we're customers and we deserve better treatment than we're getting (i.e., not total silence). If we aren't, then why do we have to go through the adf.ly hassle? It's not 5 seconds to figure out which scripts I can allow without putting my PC at risk. It's a hassle.
Then, we've got one poster saying that Elo's likely only made $3-5 and another poster saying that she's probably made about $7k. Which is it? If she's making $3-5, then I don't understand how she (or any mod author) can justify making us go through adf.ly to get their mods. If she's making $7k, then, again, we're customers. This situation is no different than TV, radio, websites, or anything else that's supported through ads.
The idea that mods (including RP2) are comparable to Minecraft is laughable. In the case of Minecraft, I paid one fee that entitled me to download every game update whenever I want to without putting my PC at risk and without sitting through any ads or submitting any other additional payments. In the case of adf.ly mods, I have to pay a fee (in time) every time I download the mod, whether it was updated or not. These two payment systems are very different. Please don't pretend that they're the same.
Finally, there are alternatives to adf.ly that don't have the same virus troubles. If you (the general you, not you specifically!) insist on using a payment service, then please use one with a better reputation and better quality controls. Thanks!
LACK OF COMMUNICATION is the main factor why people are so frustrated.
its insulting enough to be ignored and in return one MUST expect to be insulted back...
I sliced up your post because on the whole i disagree with it. Except the first line, i agree completely that the LoC is the main factor as to why everyone is so angry.
Now on to the second line...why must one expect to be insulted back? Why shouldn't one expect people to behave like people should. Why should she be insulted at all? How do you know she's "ignoring" us. Maybe she's working on the mod with as much of her FREE time as she feels it's appropriate to. I would argue that it's insulting to her to act as if she owes us anything. Your statement implies that it would be perfectly acceptable to start verbally assaulting people on the street who don't say Hi to me. It wouldn't be acceptable, and would likely lead to trouble with the law.
@Kwami; Sounds interesting, but there's a few holes in that theory that you might not consider.
Numbered lists are just about impossible to quote, so I'll reply with numbers instead.
1. She doesn't have to reply in this topic, though she probably ought to. This is her topic. The whining, complaining, etc. is a direct consequence of the total silence. If she kept her users updated (and no, second-hand news from Slowpoke the Troll doesn't count), then there probably wouldn't be so much uncertainty here. Even if she ignores this thread, she could 1) get her blog working and update there, or 2) update on Twitter. She's done neither.
2. I don't know how much money she's making from the ads, so it's hard to comment further on this bit. If it's a tiny amount, as some suggest, then it hardly seems worth the risk of adf.ly. If it's a lot, as other suggest, then it's hard to see this as anything but a creator-customer relationship. She might choose not to collect revenues from prereleases, etc. in favor of maintaining a polished image for the product. Most software isn't distrbuted until it's of release quality.
3. I'm not really sure where you're going with this. I'm arguing that adf.ly is a poor practice. I don't care if Eloraam makes money from her mod. That's her thing. As a customer (or user, if we're not being commercial), I'm providing feedback about what I would be willing to go through to get Elo's mods. I would not be willing to use an adf.ly link. I'm letting her (and other mod authors) know that. This is free marketing data! I'm not alone, here. I've seen countless complaints about adf.ly on this forum. An alternative would be great.
4. I don't know about that. Most of these payment systems seem to require a non-disclosure agreement about payment terms.
Simply: No, I wouldn't. I wouldn't require my users to go through a risky ad service to use my mods. If I needed monetary payment for my mods, then I would find an alternative. Donation buttons tend to work well. There are adf.ly alternatives with better reputations and less risk.
Personally, I'm considering to stop using/waiting for RedPower. I do not want to be in this situation again, waiting for a vaporware mod with an unresponsive developer. And I'm convinced that I'm not the only user about to vote with one's feet.

Well, nobody is forcing you to wait on it. I don't know why you feel you have to let everyone know you're not waiting anymore. You just stop waiting. It's not gonna be like 'Stop the presses! Booterman is giving up'.
It's probably for the best, though I don't doubt people will flock right back to it when it finally comes out. If you people stopped checking the thread obsessively and just took a peek once a month or something, it'd be out before you knew it.

I know. But what bothers me is the fact that even if RedPower is released (which I doubt), the same annoying situation is quite likely to repeat itself. If you wish to experience it yet again - go ahead. I just expressed my own opinion - as you did.

I wonder if there's an option to email me once the title of this thread changes. Obviously I don't want to subscribe, I really don't care to be bugged about every blasted reply to this thread.

If you are on the twitter, you could follow her, I'm sure she'll tweet once it's released, and she certainly won't "flood" your twitter with tweets, as she doesn't ever really tweet.
Didn't know that it's hard to quote numbered lists I'm usually not that active on forums.
I didn't, either, until I tried to quote yours. I couldn't seem to break out of the list to quote each point separately.
Anyway, I'm sure you have quite a few valid arguments there. I'm still not in agreement pertaining the communication. I've put down a couple of comments already and stretched out that the community itself is most likely causing the silence. Whether it's valid or not, it's not helpfull and certainly won't help to get the mod released any sooner.
I'm not sure that the community is causing the silence. Rather, I think that the silence is causing a lot of what you see in this thread.
The revenues from adfly are probably something that we'll have no real answer to, but software in a polished state is nowadays more a dream then a truth. More and more software (not beta-software, but release clients)is released with loads of bugs. Let's for instance take minecraft itself. It's been sold during beta, and still after it's official release there's a lot of bugs. Therefore I'd say if she's going for a polished image, she deserves an extra pat on the back. Not a firing squad of angry users.
Hey, I commend her for striving to release bug-free software. I wish that more mod authors (and game publishers!) did the same. I'm all about taking your time and getting it right. But, well, keep us informed while you do it. A public bug tracker is a good place to start and there are many free ones available. Using a service like GitHub would let us test builds before release, report new bugs, and watch the development progress. Eloraam could still post only "finished" mods here on the forum for mass consumption. Unfortunately, she doesn't seem keen on making this mod open source, so GitHub probably won't work.
Last but not least; I find It admirable that you wouldn't do this (adfly stuff) and that you seemed to really have taken the time to think about my post.
I doubt it, the world would've ended a long time ago if that were true.
Or we are already dead and too stupid to realize it.
Other news, Im sure all is going well.. She just wants people to spend time with their families for the holidays, and will prevent drunk driving during the new years.. Brilliant plan lol *** no i do not know when she will release, that was /sarcasm ..*** Happy holidays all!!
To all the naysayers who complained about Elo's donation link being posted without her releasing an update... pay attention. You're about to learn what doing a good thing can result in:

am i the only one that's absolutely certain elo will release rp2? and i think that will happen pretty soon too. anyway, if i have to wait a month or so for a piece of software i can't write that will give me tons and tons of fun, i can definitely do it. if i consider the fact that i don't pay for it, i definitely think we can wait a couple weeks more for the release. if you follow DW20 you know there's still a couple bugs to track down, but you also know we are pretty close to a release point... at least i hope so. anyway, why don't you go play with another great mod and have fun with that while you wait for rp2, instead of keeping this post alive and well fed with horrible and useless comments? that's what i'm doing, and i'm definitely enjoing tc3 and the others great mods out there!
Why wouldn't she release it? she spent months working on it. not releasing it would be stupid.

That's all the communication I needed to be happy. Elo is taking time out of her day, out of her work, to finish up something she won't see a fraction of the money from just for us, the community.
I'll be happy for it to be out if nothing more than to see the rabid fanboyism and the never being happy folk go back into their holes and let it just be 'A nice mod' again. You state one opinion that the fanboy group doesn't like and 'How dare you day even a cross thing about this! You must be a 15 year old child that doesn't know what it's like to be an adult! She has EVERY right to do nothing and you have NO right to speak!' All the way down the line to 'Hey, got this bug fixed!' 'Ur not working fast enough! Give it now! Fix bugs later!'. Even asking for a happy medium is blown up because of how quick people are to snap at the others. I think this is the most active non-active mod in the history of Minecraft at this point o.O
It'l be a nice treat atleast to see if we can fit all the redpower gizmos into the builds already running for 1.4.5.. Whole bunch of stuff has changed on both fronts so it's going to take some serious rethinking of layouts.
Or we are already dead and too stupid to realize it.

You know, not everyone celebrates Christmas and gets all sentimental and wants to spend time with their family. I respect those that do, but to be honest, you shouldn't need a holiday to spend time with people you care about. This is why I'll be doing my own thing (playing MC) on the 25th, and hanging out with my friends on the 26th.
I just sent a donation via paypal to Elo since this seems to be the thing needed to help speed up a release. If you want to help her have more time to work on RP2 then maybe you can make a small donation also. (I am in no way related to Elo or have any vested interest other than I will admit I really want to see RP2 out before the end of the year.)
Then, we've got one poster saying that Elo's likely only made $3-5 and another poster saying that she's probably made about $7k. Which is it? The blog has been down for about a month or so. Once the mod updates, I'm sure the blog will be back.
