Try "Paintball:Launcher (C)". I believe that's the item ID. Basically, any colored items have (C) instead of a color. To get the color, you probably have to play with metadata.
Unfortunately, there cannot be a space inside the ID because a space is what divides the different section of a command. I tried "Paintball:Launcher(C)" and "Paintball:Launcher_(C)" but neither worked. Typically, IDs use an underscore to substitute a space but still keep it as an ID.
Been a while! Just a look into the future, should Forge be released for 1.8 (As it has now been released, I've even made my own map with it.), will you be working on converting the mod to 1.8? Or will you be sticking to updating the 1.7.10 version?

I will update the mod to 1.8 as soon as Minecraft Forge updates. It's not out for 1.8 yet.
They're simply the item name in all lowercase without any color identifier. Ex: "pistol", "pellet", "scanner", "insta-base", etc. If you look on my BitBucket and go to the item and block files, they all have a GameRegistry call that gives them the IDs. Check there for whatever you need.
Firstly, I wanna take a moment to thank you for this mod, I've played it all the way back since 1.4.7 and have enjoyed it tremendously, as have close friends of mine who I've played with. Now, I've done a quick search through this thread but haven't seen anything along these lines so I thought I'd ask about a possible addition to your mod if you're keen on hearing it.
Back in 1.4.7 I used this mod and had lots of fun, but found it was a little overpowered when played on survival because it was an early game method to damage mobs from a distance with cheap ammunition. I'm looking into throwing together a game for some friends again to play it with a few other popular mods, but would prefer not to have this problem- is there a chance you could add a configuration option so that mob damage could be disabled and only players would be affected by your mod's weapons?
Hi IKinx.
First of all, Your mod is fantastic, and I have had a ton of fun with it for the past couple days!
Unfortunately, when myself and a friend were testing the mod on my server, the whole server crashed while we were shooting at each other. I have not been able to restart the server without getting an error message, or removing your paintball mod.
I am running the forge 1.8 server, java 1.8.8_31 and Paintball 1.8.
I tried modifying the .bat file to "jre1.8.0_31" and "forge-1.8-11.14.0.1295-1.8-universal.jar" but it acted the exact same.
Hopefully you can help me figure this out

Hope this works!
In the next update, the IDs should be "paintball:<item/block name all lowercase without the (C) stuff".
So "paintall:launcher", "paintball:scanner", "paintball:helmet", etc. should be the IDs. I'll push an update this weekend.

I'm waiting for Forge to update to 1.8 before I release the update.
