There is something about Optifine that involves chests becoming mostly invisible. I don't know why it does this, but it does. It has been doing it since I started using it with 1.3.2. It would take several reloads of the game to get rid of it, but it would pop up every once in a while. Now that I have updated to 1.4.2, it has gone far beyond that. Now all mobs are missing their right arm or front right leg as well as left (back) leg, sometimes along with their head. Also, certain object classes (pigs, brewing stands, endermen, whatever...) will have the entire terrain.png file pasted across their body, complete with moving lava/water squares. It flickers between that and the normal texture, and will sometimes disappear and reappear on a completely different type of object. It is not always the entire creature, however, as I recently saw a bunch of pigs with the two missing legs, and a pattern of multicolored squares on their front left leg. They then started flickering with the terrain.png texture. Mobs often have that happen to them, and while it is baffeling as to why it happens, I have found that it has nothing to do with the video settings, and everything to do with whether or not I am using Optifine. It faded away when I did a force update, acompanied by using the LWJGL libraries to fix the black screen, but once I enabled any other mod (modloader, forge, light detector, spawner gui...) it quickly came back, which was confusing, as it was originally happening without any mods being installed besides Optifine. I hope that you can figure out what it is and fix it. The game is just too slow without Optifine, and I need it for HD textures (I prefer not to use the patcher.)
I'm trying to make a texture pack, and Optifine is supposed to support extra Custom Colors, as mentioned in the OP. I tried making a redstonecolor.png and I don't know how to get it to work right now with the latest updates. I don't know what to put in the color.properties file for this one.
EDIT: FIGURED IT OUT. I had Custom Colors turned OFF in my settings. Man, that took way too long for me to figure out...

I'm getting that problem too. Hope there is a fix soon!

Disabling multi-core chunk loading fixed that issue for me, do however really want a fix cause the multi-core loading is very sweet
So I'm using B5 Ultra and I'm also getting the issue where a new world generates and rather than spawning on land I immediately fall into nothingness. A7 doesn't give me this issue, but I updated to B5 because the OP mentions fixed Forge support. I'm tempted to try A7 with Forge and see if I encounter problems. But since I've seen this issue mentioned 3-5 pages back, I know I'm not the only one. Is it a known issue? Thanks in advance! Love the mod - it helps my girlfriend play with much-improved speed. I've got a pretty powerful computer, so it's less noticeable, but it's night and day for her on an older 8400GS! lol
Edit: I forgot to mentioned this, and it's probably good to let you know. If I generate a world on A7 or the server, it loads them fine. But if B5 is installed, and I click new world, the world is always empty. Again, EXISTING worlds present no problem, only newly generated worlds and only with B5 do I have problems.
I've had this, too... In fact, I still have this... In my case I will eventually pop onto solid ground - it just takes a while initially. However I got the feeling that the time needed from falling and falling to popping onto solid ground reduced since I updated my graphics drivers...
However, this is still an issue that's pretty unnerving... also:
Ok so another thing I've noticed: Every time the :falling infinitely in new worlds" problem is mentioned, it never seems to get a response. I've seen it mentioned over the last 6-8 pages (more or less) and never notice a response for it. This has only happened to me since B5. Is it a known bug? Maybe if I give more details, it'll warrant a response. It happens regardless of having Forge or any other mods installed. I've even tried deleting Minecraft, launching the .exe and downloading it all over again. I'm running Win7 x64 with 64-bit Java. This only happens with B5 (even if Optifine B5 is the ONLY modification to stock Minecraft) so that rules out mod compatibility or bugs.
this is true... however I had this problem since B1... A7 doesn't show this problem but it's not "avaliable" any more (edit: just forget that I wrote this ;))...
I have seen the problem and I added some changes to OptiFine to avoid it.
In 1.4.4 the problematic part of the minecraft code is changed and OptiFine is also working a bit differently at this place, so the problem is probably not existing in 1.4.4 with OptiFine D1. I can not reproduce it anymore.
I have the "falling through an empty new world" problem too, nonstop.
Either by dditing the minecraft.jar manually.
Or running via Magic Launcher.
No difference. Same problem, all the time in Optifine Ultra D1 1.4.4 preview.
No clue what to do. I ran ONE world where it generated properly, but 10 other tries where it didn't bother.
Edit: may have fixed it. I used to use javaw.exe to run minecraft. When i updated to 1.4.4 and the latest optifine, plus running through Magic Launcher instead (i hadn't played minecraft in months and months), i let Magic Launcher use the default java.exe instead.
Turns out, java.exe was not allowed in my firewall settings. After clicking Multiplayer and allowing it, then going back to single player and starting a new world, the terrain finally appeared.
So it seems your client MUST be allowed in the firewall even if you play singleplayer, with the latest OF Ultra D1. This was not the case with the previous version for 1.4.2
Maybe this helps you track down the issue.
Edit2: scratch that, seems my frantic pressing of Escape and waiting alot was part in solving the issue. Perhaps the latest Optifine needs to let the terrain buffer / load in for a few sec before dropping the player in?
Hey! I love your mod to pieces! I was just wondering if anyone can suggest how to get it working with better than wolves? The console throws an exception at me claiming that it can't find a function (something about use mipmaps) so anyways it would be awesome if someone could offer some help
Added a bunch of new donation options: PaySafeCard, UKash, mobile, credit card without paypal account and so on. The cape activation is now fully automatic, just remember to spell the minecraft username correctly (case-sensitive).
Disabling multi-core chunk loading fixed that issue for me, do however really want a fix cause the multi-core loading is very sweet
Then I know what it is.... The processors aren't working together correctly anymore... One is acting up. Anyways, the problem with disabling it for me is that I have a low end computer with dual core Pentiums, and I really need the multi-core loading to keep it from lagging too bad.
Is A alpha? Is B beta? Is the Beta a more refined version, newer than Alpha? Or is Alpha 7 newer than Beta 5? Does only the integer matter? 7 means release #7 which happens to be an Alpha that's newer than release #5 which happens to be a Beta? Why do you have both? Can you PLEASE give some information in the topic about how this works? Do you think I'm going to guess?

No need to guess, get the one that is not labeled Preview and all is good.
I just reformatted my pc, brought it back to 'out of the box, brand new' condition. Updated my graphics card, updated java to 7.9..... I install this optifine, by dropping everything into my jar, deleting the meta inf. I start mc and get black screen. I'm using the ultra as that's what I've used since ages now.....
any idea what the issue would be? I've never had this happen before now.

I am also getting a black screen just like the moderator, it used to be working fine for me but now it's just giving me a black screen. I have done what the moderator has done as well, I've deleted minecraft and downloaded a new one, got rid of meta-inf and BAM still black screen.
help me, i have some problems with optifine. i dont know what version i own because it is installed on nodus client. here is the problem: at some time while playing, the whole game freezes and a big blank chunk appear. i mine a block and it lag for 5 second and return to the blank again. sometime, it's soo laggy that the game crashes and says "out of memory" i tried every kinds of settings to help but it never helped. what could i do to solve this?

1. Go here and download the latest stable release: http://lwjgl.org/download.php
2. Copy jinput.jar, lwjgl.jar, and lwjgl_util.jar from the jar folder from the zip to the .minecraft/bin folder, overwriting the originals.
3. Go into the natives folder and into the folder for your OS. Pretty simple.
4. Copy all of the files into your .minecraft/bin/natives folder, overwriting everything.
That should fix your problem. It's a bug with the version of LWJGL that Minecraft is distributed with.

I don't know the process for ATI, but if you're using nVidia go to your control panel and add java.exe in Program Files\Somethingorother\jre7 (come on, u can find it).
DISABLE Threaded Optimization.
Done, no more flickering with multi-core chunk loading.!!
Now, i'm getting this problem ALOT lately (1.4.2, latest optifine ultra, and regardless which chunk loading i choose and regardless of any other settings including advanced opengl).
Big splots of pure darkness, they fix themselves when i enter them or when a mob enters, and becomes properly smoothly shaded again. I saw this in earlier minecraft versions sometimes, but never as frequent as this (in every direction i turn on a mountain, i see this error all across the landscape here and there).
It's really a shame. Ruins the beauty. RUINS MY IMMERSION! lol

Funny thing is, i never had the control problems and such that some users reported (which your solution does fix).
I thought, what the heck i'll update it as well, why not.
It actually INTRODUCED problems that i didn't have with the version Minecraft supplies by default. Funny how computer hardware variations work

Sadly no error log. All I get is a black screen. Times like these I wish there was a 'minecraft has crashed' so I could offer one to you. :/

You can get the Magic Launcher and use it to start the game.
It shows a nice error log even when Minecraft can not start.
