I really want to use this because of features like zoom, texture pack changing in game, better stuff, CTM and so on. (MCpatcher doesn't have all of it). But optifine decreases my fps to like 15 even though (especially after 1.4.6) I was having a nice 30 fps with no mods installed. And most importantly, that is so far from "stable and smooth fps" that optifine promises. My fps jumps around from 20 to like 5 and the result is terrible.
I am not that dump, I tried messing around with settings a lot. Nothing helps.

2 GB ram
Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.02 Ghz
(PC is not that trash either for minecraft)
EDIT: don't hurry to help, I'll test a little more. After some reinstalls and restarts it's a little bit better.

Have you tried using different versions of optifine? Perhaps get Ultra and enable multi-core. That may help.
It seems optifine is causing the mod "iron chests" to crash when using an upgrade on a wooden chest:

When you disable optifine, it works fine, but with it enabled the above error causes the client to crash from the server. This error has been posted on cpws iron chest forum multiple times but never seems to get fixed. So I thought I'd post it there.
<edit> Have had this problem all through 1.4.6. Currently running 1.4.7, forge 495, optifine a3.
I have an idea how this can be fixed, added to TODO list (option Delayed Updates).
However this will add back some of the lag when moving around.
Then it is probably related to the chunk in which the sign is located.
I still can not reproduce it.

Well, it happens with OF turned on and doesn't happen with OF turned off. It's definitely something. I don't know how to do it, but I'd be willing to send you my map, or whatever else you may need, to help you troubleshoot.
Hey, I've just been having a slight issue, I wanted to make custom biome colors for cattails I'm making for a Texture Pack- like lighter in desert biomes, greener in forest, etc. It works for the most part, however, in the swamp biome the cattails simply appear white, just like I made them in textures.png. I have custom colors and swamp colors turned on in Video Settings -> Quality. I did find out, however, that the swamp colors work when I turn off "Smooth Biomes", however that's not a very reasonable solution, since then biome borders just look plain ugly. If you could find out the problem and the solution, it would be much appreciated.
Oh, also, I'm using Ultra. I haven't tried the others yet.

This mod breaks every time I open single player. It takes a long time to "download terrain" and once it does it freezes up. Optifine is the only mod I have installed. P.S. multiplayer works fine.
Ok I did it but I still have low fps. The only thing that improved was that I can play the game on normal render now. (Normal render distance will have the same effect on the fps as short did) SO it's better by a little bit. Oh and I can't play the graphics on fancy yet either.
If you don't like it turn capes off. No one cares what you think, or mojang for that matter, they completely disregard the modding community by pushing so many updates. (like the recent one that added fireworks.)
here's the map I've had it the worst, because it has a lot of signs. If I walk to a new area, I suddenly get a spam of 20ish messages about signs not found, and their coordinates. As said before, relogging makes the signs in the immediate area work, but does not fix the problem. The signs effected are there, but appear blank. This is most noticeable at the victory monument and surrounding area (a steel looking tower marked by one of the beacons)
It's unrelated to the custom texture pack or the individual map, because I've experienced this issue in other maps, it's unique to 1.4.6, and I've had it in both ultra A3 and the version before it.

Well, obviously this also doesn't make since to you. I don't believe OptiFine capes will turn off at all. And, besides, do you really want Mojang to just stop updating Minecraft? Seriously?!?!?

I was using ultra with multi-core all the time, now trying standart. Also reinstalled everything. I'll test a little more, it got a little better now.
