I would like to use this mod, but even though it says you have the mcpatcher inside it, it doesn't work right. With this mod installed, the sides of my grass stay the default colour and dont change to be biome specific. It looks horrible and tbh I would rather have grass then a small fps boost (what I get).
on the detail settings menu, change the grass to fancy, and the sidegrass will be biome specific

First off, to be specific as there is a difference, the MCPatcher utility is NOT inside the OptiFine Mod. OptiFine has built-in functionality that adds (in addition to extra configuration settings and performance gains etc) support for HD Textures, HD Fonts, and Better Grass just like the MCPatcher. The MCPatcher is not exactly a mod. It is a utility that patches the minecraft.jar file for you and has the ability to add support for those options with what it deems mods that it has included with it. You have a choice whether or not to install those mods included with the MCPatcher. But, you don't want to install those if you're using OptiFine for those options instead.
Secondly, in the Minecraft Options -> Video Settings -> Details section (with OptiFine installed of course), there are two grass settings you need to configure properly. The first one is in the left column fifth one down and is for Better Grass. The second Grass option is in the right column second one down. Settings are as follows:
Options -> Video Settings -> Details:
Better Grass:
OFF - Default Side Grass Texture (Fastest)
FAST - Full Side Grass Texture (Slower)
FANCY - Dynamic Side Grass Texture (Slowest)
Grass:
DEFAULT - As Set By The "Graphics" Setting (in the previous "Video Settings" section)
FAST - Lower Quality But Faster (Uses "Default" Side Texture)
FANCY - Higher Quality But Slower (Uses "Biome" Side Texture)
Not sure why those settings are separated like that. But, this functionality does work for most people. So, you can't really say it doesn't work. Play around with these settings first and then you can maybe say whether or not these settings work for you.
As for the "Graphics" Setting (in the previous "Video Settings" section as mentioned above), it is meant to change the general "Visual Quality" with the following settings:
Options -> Video Settings:
Graphics (Changes the appearance of clouds, leaves, water, shadows, and grass sides):
FAST - Lower Quality But Faster
FANCY - Higher Quality But Slower
Again, not completely sure why this is in a different section and also on a different settings page.
Suggestion for sp614x: Re-design the settings menus so options like these for Better Grass are grouped better.

Edit: Working now. You have to set default texture pack as default, then install Optifine HD F and select your HD pack.
You always have to install ModLoader before installing other mods.
And, I bet that is why a lot of people have run into a black-screen issue. A lot of those people probably already have their texture pack selected and have maybe been using the MCPatcher previously. After refreshing the minecraft.jar file (which doesn't clear all of the rest of the settings like which texture pack was selected etc), OptiFine gets installed and then that user gets a black screen because they didn't first change to the default texture pack before installing OptiFine.
Maybe something like this should maybe be mentioned in the original post:
To try and prevent a possible "Black Screen" issue, please temporarily revert to using the "Default Texture Pack" (if a different one was being used) before installing OptiFine. You can then once again select that texture pack (or, a different one if you prefer) after installing OptiFine.
At first I loved this . . . it got me around 40 - 60 FPS on average. But then I started to realize that when I would create a new world some chunks would NEVER load, and it would seem as if different maps were just hashed together because there would be a big hill, and then it would just suddenly stop and have completley different biome at the bottom of the 90 degree steep cut off.

Can someone help me?
What are your settings for the three options I listed in a post three posts above yours?
I don't know why some people are having issues with TMI, SPC, or zombe's mod pack. It's kinda simple actually:
- NEVER USE MCPATCHER, SINCE IT BREAKS OPTIFINE ALWAYS
- Delete any texture packs you use, or REVERT to the default one or else it WILL NOT work.
1. Delete META-INF
2. Install Modloader
3. Install Optifine (For me, it'll be standard F)
4. Install SPC
5. ALWAYS Install zombe's mod pack BEFORE TooManyItems
6. Install TooManyItems

There. Happy?
I use texture packs with it, and it runs, but a lot of giant chunks won't load. Could that be caused by using a texture pack?

Like I also mentioned earlier, he means for you to temporarily go back to the default texture pack before installing OptiFine.
If you meant you're using the MCPatcher for the HD Texture Pack functionality--DON'T. This is in OptiFine.
As for chunks not loading, there are other OptiFine settings that can help you resolve that issue. You probably don't have enough memory available based on the current settings you're trying to use.
This mod does exactly THE FRIGGIN OPPOSITE OF WHAT IT SAYS IT DOES!

Congratulations guys. Con-frakking-gratulations.
I got this mod because I have an older PC. I thought that a few tweaks to squeeze a few more FPS out might help in exploring the Aether and Nether, where there's a lot to be rendered at once. No luck there.
See, normally my computer has some occasional really bad lag spikes. They hit they end. I move on. No big deal, really, but annoying at times. Normally I play on fast settings with short render. But I can actually get away with Normal render, and maybe even Fancy graphics when I have to. Now, however, thanks to your mod, I can "enjoy" constant lag spikes. My game is stuttering and chopping worse than a poorly buffered Youtube video. It's absolutely horrible. So thanks for that. I can report FPS drops of about 90% thanks to you. Keep up the "good" work. :dry.gif:
EDIT: I should add, in fact, that I actually had to turn my graphics settings down after installing this mod. So I'm not just getting worse performance. I'm getting worse performance now out of low settings than I used to get out of HIGH settings...and actually using my old settings? Forget it!

lol this made me laugh. very elaborate speech you could try experimenting with other settings instead of immediately spending 15 minutes typing your post... but maybe that's too difficult for you... I honestly don't know why optifine sometimes does the opposite of what it's supposed to do. maybe your computer is so old that it's impossible to get an fps boost, but if your desperate, you could try gamebooster. search for it on google if you want to. it really helps!
I love the extra control this mod offers, and as soon as I installed it I noticed faster performance on fancy settings, whereas fancy settings would cause my Minecraft to almost completely freeze before. However, it still lags, and I would like to put my settings back to "Fast"..but since installing this mod, every time I try to put my settings back to "Fast", I get a "Saving Chunks" error with a blue overlay, and then it simply black screens and I end up needing to force close it. I then can't open up any of my save files unless I go into my options and change the setting back to Fancy graphics. I've tested it, and the same thing happens when I try to change the settings for trees, grass, water, etc. that the mod offers (changing them from fancy to fast). Why does it do this, and what am I doing wrong?
My minecraft.jar is fresh. This and modloader are the only two things currently installed, and I'm using the default texture pack.
I apologize if this has been covered before. I didn't see it mentioned anywhere. Thank you ahead of time for your help!

also, i did install, had multiple problems installing due to being a complete mod novice and not knowing anything about java, i just tried to follow instructions to the letter, cause i know how delicate software is etc (hey but at least i wasn't one of those noobs that goes crying and spamming the forum with why can't i install without properly reading, just had other mod confilcts)
anyway, when i got it working, there is a great improvement so far, but the real reason i needed this is because when installed the yogbox i was running at really low fps and i needed to do something about it and i got recomended optimine and optifog, then i saw this and thought. .....well these would seem like it's do better and tried it, any tips, help and pointers are greatly apprecaited.

I do not know at the moment, because I am not at home. When I am though, I will either post it here or private message it to you.

The only problem I have had with it, is in places really far out, (300,000 plus meters), seems to make chunk lag horrible for me at least.
Any suggestions?
