As a sidenote, I've noticed that when Random Mobs is on, non-tamed wolves have random textures but tamed wolves are no longer showing up with random textures (whereas they did when I was using MCPatcher, was nice having different colored ones.)
Obviously the same texture pack and name format, i.e. wolf3.png, wolf_tame3.png, etc.
It also seems particularly finicky. Out of 4 cow textures, I spammed some cow eggs and it seemed to spawn them all in one color for a while, then eventually switch to another, and I never got cow2.png to spawn at all. Not a big issue, obviously, but I like variety in my Minecraft, and I have to give up MCPatcher for Optifine.

If you are using a Texturepack you need a seperate ctm.png for this. The easiest way is to take one with CTM-Support...i personally prefer the KOP atm...but there are still some others with their own ctm-textures :-)

You have to determine that for yourself since everyone's computer is different. And, the features you wish to enable or disable will also be different. Regardless, in general, some people find a great benefit from the Multi-Core Edition while others do not.

CTM is slightly a misnomer since (in this case) it stands for Connected Textures Mod. The mod itself is a bit outdated but the connected textures support (minus the word "mod") has been added to OptiFine. One could possibly still say that OptiFine now has "CTM" support since it supports texture packs that have the additional ctm.png file needed for connected textures but really it's just connected textures (again, without the word "mod") support now.
Note, "CTM" is also often used in reference to "Complete The Monument" maps that you can download and play on and shouldn't be confused with the way it is used here.
why water lights and some terrain shadows or biome transition are like MC 1.2 beta? (hard... not smoth transition) what config I'm missing? all other lights look fine
I love most OptiFine features, specially now that it seems to be working better with Java 7, but it's a CHAOS on artifacts when you are high in, say, a building. Here's what I am experiencing while building at around 120m:
1. The top of a building about 200m away keeps FLICKERING
2. Every once a while when I put a block (let's say, every 10 blocks), the game will either show me all the underground and caves past the building and floor, or the chunk I am standing will go TRANSPARENT for a second and I have to stop what I am doing or I might fall out
3. Lightning is extra bugged. I have to go to EACH FLOOR so the light of the torches are actually counted, and when I do that, number 2 always happens (alas, when it's updating the blocks to get light on them, everything goes transparent for a while)
I have tried to turn on or off every option but all of the above keep happening, but *only* when I am at very high altitude (probably because there are more seen blocks). None of the above happens at ground level or caves.
I am using the MT version, will try smooth only to check for improvements.
On the "plus" note, yes I got some 50% increase in FPS.

Using Smooth version the problem is gone ... seems to be a MT version issue. In fact, seems I have better FPS with the smooth version!
I didn't try the video card threaded optimization because I'm a firm believer that pushing the blame to the video card driver is not the way to go. As for enabling Vsync in the performance, I always use that so it didn't quite work.
Maybe tweaking the video card options could fix it, but I don't like to change that unless it's a all-out every-game know-driver-issue problem, and not one game specific. I mean, I can play Skyrim, Crysis, BF3 with no issue and never tweaking anything at the drivers (other than getting performance/quality balance right), why should I to MC? =p
My opinion, my problem, I know!

Sounds like your video card is overheating, then. Start monitoring those temperatures. If it gets over 100 degrees Celsius, it's too hot.

It's not my GFX card, MCPatcher works fine. No texture glitches. It might be a mod. So I'll try that.
Highest my card ever got was about 70c. Thats when play games like Skyrim.
I'm gonna try to do a reinstall of my mods.
Should Installing Optfine be the last thing I install? Like

So rolling back to Smooth version ^^;
by default it as 500mb.. its completely safe though mate. - just know that the game won't start if you overassign ram
