I am brand new to minecraft modding -- should I be using optifine, mc patcher, or some combination of the two?
When I download optifine and install it, then try to run mc patcher, it says something like "it looks like your minecraft.jar is already patched - get a new one". So then, I tried installing optifine with mc patcher. I got a black screen until I found out that mc patcher's hd fonts conflicts with optifine. So I unchecked hd fonts and it works correctly now.
But am I doing this right? It seems like a lot of shenanigans to go through to get it to work. I was just going to use only optifine and not mcpatcher, but I didn't see a download available for an optifine-only version. In your instructions, you say "take everything from the 'compiled...' folder", but I don't have a compiled folder.. only a "mcpatcher-mods" folder and dynamiclights.settings.
So, am I doing this right? I'm just confused as to how exactly I should be using mcpatcher and optfine, or if I should be using one or the other. Like which one is more desirable to use, and why? Maybe this isn't the place to ask this question, but so far, I haven't really found an answer elsewhere.
If you're using MC Patcher then you have to uncheck HD Fonts And Textures. You can use better grass from Optifine. MC Patcher is good to see what conflicts mods have. If you do a manual install into the jar file, MC Patcher WILL always warn you that the jar file has already been modded.
BTW AtomicStryker, solved my problem with graphical flickering. Had to put Java into the programs tab of the nVidia Control Center and turn off Thread Optimization.
Thanks. But just to make sure I'm understanding this correctly, am I right in installing optifine with mcpatcher? Because if I manually install optifine first (by copying the files into minecraft.jar), mcpatcher tells me I have an already modded minecraft.jar when I run it.
And I'm probably overlooking it, but the only current download link I saw for dynamic lights was for the one that requires mcpatcher.
And, could you tell me if I'm doing it right? As far as having optifine and mcpatcher at the same time, but removing the hooks from hd resolutions and fonts? Or should I be using only optifine or only mcpatcher?
Thanks for the help.
MCPatcher can "install" mods like Optifine for you, which means nothing other than it placing the mod .class files into the minecraft jar (it also notifies you of overlapping classes etc). You CAN install Optifine with MCPatcher, and then install Dynamic Lights (Optifine) with MCPatcher aswell.

Go away you hallucination
Can you help a lite here?
I download the DynamicLights zip file. I do not want to use mcpatcher.
Inside the zip have dynamiclights.settings and a "mcpatcher-mods" folder.
Inside the folder have "DynamicLights.jar"
How I install without mcpacher?
Yes, I want to use optifine.

can you pls make it like other mods. that you have a zip file wich you need to copy paste over to minecraft.jar i can get the mod working but then i can't use other mods that i'm using wich is really annoying + i find this more work that just copy pasting
but so far i really love the mod and i would love it even more if i could get it working with my other mods
I apologize for asking the same question everyone else is but, to put it simply, it's not working.
I followed your directions exactly, nothing happened when I pulled out a torch. I tried following the directions of the first video... nothing happened when I pulled out a torch. The following is how I installed it in case I did something wrong:
1) download dynamic lights
2) install optifine mt
3) unpack dynamic lights, insert contents into minecraft.jar
4) open mcpatcher 2.2.2
5) add Modloader, Dynamic Lights, Player API Client 1.2, Too Many Items 2011_11_19, Timber!
6) click patch
7) manually install Smart Moving for Modloader
8) play Minecraft
The only mod that doesn't work is Dynamic lighting. If it matters my texturepack is Gerudoku Faithful Classic Diamond Sword. I will continue to try different mod combinations and hope I can find the problem on my own...
EDIT: btw is there any reason why you can't make this a "drop everything in minecraft.jar and it will all work" mod?
I cannot get the damn thing to work. Pulling out a torch does nothing, but there was light around a mob on fire...
EDIT: Nevermind. Didn't have the configuration file.
However, the torch light does not look good at the borders of 16x16 squares (chunks I presume). There is a line that seems to separate the light or something. Walking is just looking extremely annoying. If I sit still it'll update it and look better, but I'd like to move around...
Maybe it's something to do with how my torches have a slight flicker to them, due to Misa's pack? Nope. Same with default pack.
Do you mind if i link to this post from OP? Also, the "original" version of yours appears to include some unnecessary mcpatcher files.
Yes, you can link to it. It's weird, when I didn't include the mcpatcher files in it, minecraft gave an error that it couldn't find lwjgl.jar. (I assume you're talking about the com folder).
Has anyone else had any trouble using the following? :
Forge 1.2.4
Optifine D3 Smooth
mcpatcher install of Dynamic Lights
I have gotten the loading of world and then goes into it for second then goes back out again and says saving chunks and then goes to the black screen. Has happened twice to me.
Tried it on D2 of optifine and everything seemed to load fine.

After installing this the water doesn't show anymore:
Mods Installed:
Modloader
AudioMod
GuiAPI
Optifine
SPC
Rei's Minimap
Inventory Tweaks
Probably a mistake in installing order. Make sure follow whatever instructions Optifine and Minimap have about being installed with each other (if in doubt, Optifine last), then patch in Dynamic Lights.

Life is a Learning Curve....
Unfortunately, you're stuck on the bottom...amongst the bones of the stupid.

You do indeed. But please, a modloader version.

Optifine version without mcpatcher:

As in, lower, or higher? Both will give botched results (really dodgy light or pc freezing)
